s part of the initiatives scheduled for 2009 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of its foundation, renowned jeweler Bulgari has announced a campaign to support the “Rewrite the Future” campaign of Save the Children. The organization is the largest independent international organisation for the defence and championing of children’s rights, present in over 100 countries around the world including Jordan. Bulgari has decided to support the campaign by raising 10 million Euros by the end of 2009. Of which 1 million has already been donated. Bulgari has created a special silver ring in support of Save the Children’s “Rewrite the Future” campaign.
The silver ring is engraved on the outside with the founder’s name, Sotirio Bulgari, and on the inside with the Save the Children logo as a reminder to its wearer of the ring’s purpose. The choice of silver –unusual for Bulgari, which has long favored gold – is a tribute to Sotirio Bulgari’s origins as a silversmith. The ring is available for sale until December 31, 2009 in all Bulgari stores throughout the world including Jordan at the price of JD290 of which €50 will be donated to the campaign. Celebrities who are in support of Bulgari’s campaign for Save the Children include Isabella Rossellini, Jason Lewis, Terrance Howard, Willem Dafoe, Ben Stiller and Jennifer Esposito who posed for a photoshoot with celebrated
photographer, Fabrizio Ferri. Bulgari will also create a collection of 15 pieces of high jewelry and eight high-end timepieces, valued at three million euros. This collection will be officially presented on in June 2009 in Rome, on the occasion of Bulgari’s retrospective exhibition “Between Eternity and History” to celebrate 125 years of the Bulgari brand. This collection of jewels and watches will be exhibited at various events throughout the year and the auctioned off on December 7, 2009 in New York and proceeds will be totally donated to Save the Children. Bulgari Save the Children ring is exclusively available at Time Center, Um Uthaina branch. www.bulgari.com

he Pulsomax® is the first escapement developed in its entirety by Patek Philippe. It features the same reliability and robustness for which the classic Swiss lever escapement has long been appreciated. However, its efficiency is vastly improved due to its unique geometry. To optimize the functionality of the new escapement, Patek Philippe tapped into the free-forming capabilities and high precision of the DRIE deep-etching process in silicon machining applications. With its latest developments based on this technology, Patek Philippe was able to significantly improve the performance of mechanical movements, opening up new dimensions in watchmaking. With its combination of a Pulsomax® lever and escape wheel made of Silinvar® and a Spiromax® balance spring made of Silinvar®, Patek Philippe can now present the third generation of watches within the scope of the “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” concept: the limited-edition Annual Calendar Ref. 5450 in platinum. It embodies a patent-pending innovation that considerably improves the beat accuracy and long-term reliability of mechanical movements. Six years ago, Patek Philippe began to explore potential applications for silicon in the domain of watchmaking. To optimally exploit the multiple advantages of this material, the manufacture developed new proprietary geometries for silicon components that further optimize
Spiromax
the functional of individual escapement parts and dramatically boost the long-term performance of mechanical calibers. The results of this research work with the Silinvar® material so far are an escape wheel and the Spiromax® hairspring with the Patek Philippe terminal curve. These Silinvar® parts had their debut with two limited-edition Annual Calendar wristwatches: the Ref. 5250 was launched in 2005 and the Ref. 5350 in 2006. These two watches presented under the “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” label give collectors and high-tech aficionados the opportunity to be the first to participate in trailblazing technological developments. In-depth analyses under laboratory and real-world conditions as well as the reports of owners of “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” watches were so encouraging that Patek Philippe decided to pursue the development of silicon-based components. Every development step so far has yielded significant and measurable improvements of the performance of mechanical watches.

Silinvar® stands for revolutionary progress in silicon technology
Pulsomax® – the innovative escapement made of Silinvar®
The patented Silinvar® material is obtained from pure silicon in a patented vacuum oxidation process that produces a molecular change on the surface of the silicon components.
Patek is now premièring the Pulsomax®, an entire escapement – the escape wheel and the lever – made of Silinvar®.
This molecular change endows silicon watch components with the properties that are essential for the rate accuracy of a mechanical movement. Contrary to pure silicon components, Silinvar® parts have a temperature-compensating characteristic, a very important and advantageous property for oscillating parts. Moreover, Silinvar® has no surface coating that could become defective in time. All silicon components in the Patek Philippe Advanced Research watches crafted so far are made of this unique, patented Silinvar® material.
Caliber 324 S QA IRM LU
26 I PREMIUM - Spring 2009
Nevertheless, the Pulsomax® is a Swiss lever escapement in every respect. For nearly 180 years, almost all compact mechanical movements have been fitted with this type of escapement. It owes its popularity to dependability, ruggedness, and a high level of efficiency. Thanks to high-precision machining technologies, the Silinvar® lever no longer needs to be fitted with ruby pallets. Patek Philippe has enlarged the integrated pallets to boost the efficiency of the new escapement. The redesigned lever can transmit more power to the balance. Contrary to conventional levers, the two integral pallets of the Silinvar® lever have differentiated shapes that raise the efficiency of each escape cycle. The new lever also influenced the geometry of the escape wheel, which now has 16 teeth instead of 20, as was formerly the case. The Silinvar® escape wheel presented in 2005 was still designed to interact with the geometry of a steel lever with ruby pallets. Now, the new Pulsomax® escapement features both a lever and an escape wheel with significantly optimized geometries.
Enhancedfunctionality lever design thanks to innovative DRIE process Because further progress has been made in deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) technologies, silicon parts can now also be machined on a second horizontal plane in an extra process. This enabled a totally new design of the fork that no longer needs to be fitted with a receiver block for a guard pin. Instead, the ends of the fork horns are closed with a recessed bridge that functions like a guard pin The Pulsomax® escapement gives Patek Philippe yet another opportunity to demonstrate its leadership in horological technology. It is unquestionably the most advanced Swiss lever escapement in terms of efficiency. Together with the Spiromax® balance spring, the new escapement delivers perceptible long-term improvements and measurable performance gains in mechanical movements.
PREMIUM I WATCHES no doubt some day occupy a prestigious position in the Patek Philippe Museum, testifying to a revolutionary development with which the manufacture succeeded in once again measuring the passage of time a bit more precisely.
Pulsomax Escape Wheel
The third Patek Philippe Advanced Research generation: an Annual Calendar with the nnovative Pulsomax® escapement and the Spiromax® balance spring For quite some time now, the assembly with the Spiromax® balance spring and the Pulsomax® escapement (lever and escape wheel) made of Silinvar® has been integrated in a number of prototypes worn regularly by Patek Philippe staff members, among them by President Philippe Stern. He is enthusiastic about his priceless, one-of-a-kind timepiece that never ceases to amaze him: never before in his career has he seen a mechanical wristwatch with such a rate accuracy. This “president’s watch” will
After several years of successful laboratory and real-life tests with the Pulsomax® escapement, Patek Philippe will gradually integrate this innovation in its regularly produced timepieces. However, connoisseurs and collectors of horological rarities have the opportunity to experience this milestone in horological history before the year comes to an end. In a third “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” edition limited to 300 watches, the Geneva workshops presented the Ref. 5450 at Baselworld 2008. As earlier limited editions with siliconbased components, the new watch is an Annual Calendar. The Ref. 5450 features a platinum case and a movement with a Pulsomax® escapement and a Spiromax® balance spring. Master Compressor Diving Navy SEALs The professional diving instruments of an elite corps Every dive is a confrontation, a combat, a fight in and against an environment that is magical and magnificent but, in the final analysis, hostile and not natural to human beings. Therefore it is of the utmost importance to be able to rely on one’s equipment, an essential condition that is even more important when carrying out sensitive, silent missions. With its super-rugged grade 5 titanium case, unidirectional bezel and ability to remain watertight to 1000 metres, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Compressor Diving line meets the most stringent requirements for a diving watch. So it is natural that professional divers – those for whom each dive involves performing challenging feats and surpassing limits – choose these timepieces. Jaeger-LeCoultre is constantly conferring with experts, such as snorkelling record holder Patrick Musimu, about the relevance of its latest innovations. It has signed a partnership with the United

To mark this agreement dedicated to challenging achievements, the Master Compressor Diving line is adding three limited series having a shot-peened ceramic bezel and engraved with the Navy SEALs emblem. The eagle brandishing a trident in its talons is a symbol of excellence for these extraordinary timepieces, the Master Compressor Diving Alarm Navy SEALs, the Master Compressor Diving Chronograph GMT Navy SEALs and the iconic Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic Navy SEALs. Like their namesakes, some of the best soldiers in the world, the high-tech Navy SEALs pieces combine uncommon performance and endurance. All SEAL equipment is subjected to very strict quality testing. Designed with the same goal of outstanding performance and exceptional sturdiness in mind, the ultrasophisticated Master Compressor Diving Navy SEALs line is made to be water-tight at record depths and incorporates new technical advances that make the watches both safer and even more of a pleasure to use – even in the most extreme environments.
collection, a technical answer to the stringent NIHS 92 11 criteria (ISO 6425) established by the Swiss watchmaking industry, does not simply meet the requirements of shock resistance, watertightness to 100 metres minimum, and safety thanks to a unidirectional rotating bezel; it elevates its exceptional performance to the level of a new standard. Indeed, the three Master Compressor Diving models exceed the required standards in all respects. The high-tech, super-rugged sapphire blasted unidirectional ceramic bezel is protected against misuse to guarantee perfect safety; stamped oversized hour-markers and numbers and the use of superluminova provide excellent legibility even in the darkest places; and the shape of the case, which is designed to resist the high pressure at great depths, ensures perfect watertightness to depths
of 300 to 1000 metres depending on the version. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Compressor Diving, among the most successful professional technical instruments, obviously could not long remain unknown to the United States Navy SEALs, who are always on the lookout for advanced items to supplement their equipment. So the birth of an association – dedicated to excellence and achievement – with this elite unit was almost a foregone conclusion.
The saga of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s diving watches Jaeger-LeCoultre has already been a pioneer in diver safety for a half-century now. In 1959, the Manufacture introduced its Memovox Deep Sea, the first

PREMIUM I WATCHES diving watch in history to include an alarm function to acoustically signal that it was time to return to the surface. This innovation made Jaeger-LeCoultre’s self-winding 815 calibre with alarm function one of the most iconic calibres of its day. In 1965, this principle was further perfected, giving rise to the legendary Memovox Polaris. The superposed layers of the Polaris’ triple case back acted as a resonance chamber to optimally amplify the sound and keep it from being muffled by the diver’s suit. Subsequent additions to the impressive list of diving watches signed by Jaeger-LeCoultre included the Master Marina Barracuda in 1968, the Memovox Diving Chronograph in 1969, the Memovox Polaris II in 1970, and the Master Mariner Deep Sea in 1972. These first creations already had two significant characteristics so revolutionary that they then became one of the minimum technical requirements for diving watches made by the Manufacture. The first was excellent legibility, which was ensured by the watch’s imposing diameter and later supplemented by oversized luminescent numbers. The second was an excellent seal, provided by the patented Piquerez Compressor system, the forerunner of the compression crowns and keys that equip today’s models.
Extraordinary strength of character The new Navy SEALs collection, which comprises of the Alarm, Chronograph GMT and Pro
Geographic models gives divers a choice between three additional functions, each meeting their needs in its own way: a depth gauge with world time, an alarm, or a chronograph associated with a second time-zone display. All of the models have two wristbands: one in leather with a vintage design, in titanium, in rubber-moulded or articulated rubber versions; and the other in black Cordura, a super-rugged material perfectly suited to diving. Reliability and safety brook no compromise.
NAVY SEALs: sensitive missions in the most diverse aquatic environments This elite corps of the U.S. Navy consists of seasoned soldiers with exceptional physical and mental qualities who are all trained to carry out particularly sensitive operations. During the training, which is famous for being extremely demanding and includes the famous “hell week” during which the candidates sleep a total of only six to eight hours, they receive physical training in diving, reconnaissance, camouflage, and movement methods, and theoretical training on currents, waves and position, to prepare them for action in the most difficult aquatic environments. This clandestine unit of combat swimmers is named SEAL, an acronym for SEa, Air and Land. Its history goes back to World War II: in 1943 the U.S. naval
command formed a group of volunteers under the name “Navy Combat Demolition Units.” This group’s job was to identify military installations to be destroyed so the United States Marine Corps could land with greater safety as it progressively re-took the Pacific atolls. So its members paved the way for the Marines and built infrastructures needed to conduct the war, such as landing fields for aircraft, port facilities and bridges. During the Korean War, the unit adopted the name “Underwater Demolition Teams” (UDTs). It took a new form in the 1960s, being subdivided into two distinct teams. Team One was assigned to the Pacific fleet and Team Two to the Atlantic. Like their name, their mission has gradually changed after the end of the Cold War and the scope of their activity has been expanded. These U.S. Navy commandoes have become elite units trained for action in all sorts of hostile situations, for example, the war on terrorism. SEAL equipment, which is at the forefront of technology, must be absolutely reliable. In this context, the partnership that has the Navy SEALs and Jaeger-LeCoultre joining forces to create the Master Compressor Diving Navy SEALs collection makes complete sense. It is this very quest for reliability and performance that governs Jaeger-LeCoultre’s design process for its diving watches – timepieces designed by professionals, for professionals. Timepieces resistant to shock The optimum protection of the movement as well as the unlimited use in the field of sports has been the focus of the construction and development efforts for the Sport Evolution Impact models. Four cushioning elements made of elastomer absorb up to 60% of the impact forces of shocks and other external influences. This way, the shock absorption system assures an optimum reliability and accuracy even under extreme conditions. The name Evolution that has been added to the sports collection of the Saxon manufactory Glashütte

Extreme conditions as jolts and shocks should not have an impact on the Sport Evolution Impact models. In co-operation with the Fraunhofer technology development group in Stuttgart, a material has been developed that is ideally suited to form the basis of the cushioning elements. These components, which consist of flexible Elastomer, function as the fixation points of the movement and dial and represent the connection with the case.

Reinvented in this way, retro becomes trendy.

In its Moon Phase version, the 1931 Classic Tonneau vibrates to the rhythm of an ETA movement with a Dubois DĂŠpraz 9000 complication. This mechanism is housed in a case whose delicate curves skilfully interrupt the circle of days at the centre, creating a truly graceful composition. Travellers, however, will prefer the GMT Large Date. Stamped with a certain classicism in its silvered version, this model takes on a stronger character when dressed in black, with a subtle contrast of tones. The 4N pink gold of the indexes is repeated in the hands, providing a striking effect with the
black of the dial delicately set in a steel case. Reinforced by a second time zone, it all adds up to a strong invitation to travel. Whether it be a journey in time or in space, these new Louis Erard models are on their way to eternity. Louis Erard watches are available at Time Center. www.louiserard.com

Clarity with a hint of playfulness The Tissot Lady Chrono wraps its unfaltering timekeeping, powered by a Swiss chronograph movement, in a design combining clarity and playfulness. Classically placed, round chronograph counters form a triangle pointing to 6 o’clock. A closer look reveals rose-gold applications as a frame or centre of the discs, depending on the model. These elements perfectly match the easy-to-read, appliquéd Arabic digits, reminding of the fact that the wearer likes to keep a close watch on the time. Rose-gold tones make further appearances around the date display at 4 o’clock and on the watches’ hands.
The true colours of design One of the diamond-studded versions of the Tissot Lady Chrono has a black dial, the other boasts a glistening, white mother-of-pearl one. Just like their two siblings without diamonds, they have crocodile-look leather straps to match the dial colour. In all its

ith a light-powered Eco-Drive movement as the starting point, the watch depicts cosmic space through the earth, moon and sun. The theme of the design is the fusion of space and time. The dial represents a Calendrier (Calendar) with the earth at its center. Surrounding it are the moon phase at 6 o’clock, the date (symbolizing the sun) at 12 o’clock, and day and month at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock, respectively. In a space measuring just a few millimeters thick, the multilayered metallic dial creates a sense of infinite depth and breadth and gives a feeling of continuity with the cosmos. As a design element, the month and day disks, connected to the watch’s rotation mechanism, suggest the movement of heavenly bodies. The result is the creation of a unique world, and a model that marks the debut of a totally new Eco-Drive.

SWATCH Jumps With a Splash Into Spring Summer 2009
L
eaping ahead to the Spring and Summer of 2009, SWATCH has unveiled a splashy, fresh and colourful selection of fashion watches aligned around trend-conscious themes for men and women of all ages. As always, the inventors of the world’s most popular plastic watch have encouraged their designers to make creative use of the latest colours, shapes and styles. The SWATCH Spring Summer 2009 Collection presents the cutting edge of exciting contemporary trends sweeping through the streets of the world’s trendiest cities. The famously provocative Swiss watch and jewellery brand displays its signature flair for fashion and surprisingly inventive design with a family of five fashion themes. Each theme speaks to a different audience and offers a refreshingly wide array of choices: Natural Sophistication explores the virtual space where the digital meets the natural world and forms exquisite

fusions of the future and the present. Organic Explosion speaks to a woman still a child at heart, to her playfully creative instincts and to a love of life expressed in an outgoing, fun-loving attitude. Neon Streams explodes from dance clubs to the streets in a blast of colour and bold graphic codes. The Age of Rust pays tribute to heavy industry and the urban landscapes built by rugged, strong and decisive men, while Sailaway evokes the classic male and his dream of escape to a refined and sophisticated life at sea. Once again, the SWATCH connection brings art to the wrist, with two new works by one of today’s most influential and exciting young artists – GREMS! A man of many colours and voices, French street painter, rapper, hip hop artist and designer GREMS has made a name for himself helping art escape from white cubes and museums to the streets. Taking his art straight to the people, GREMS uses walls made of brick, wood
and concrete; the sides of trucks, subway ad panels, street display windows, clothing (shoes, T-shirts); and anything else he thinks suitable as canvases for his paintings, drawings and designs. The popular rapper and hip hop musician also makes it easy to sample his songs and performances on the web and at live concerts. For the Swatch Spring Summer Collection 2009, GREMS has designed two very special Original Gents, featuring his signature dancing street figures and clusters of colourful signs and lettering. Brief introductions to these themes are presented below, along with descriptions of each of the fashion themes and watches. This enchanting and light-hearted Spring Summer collection imports the most exciting of contemporary trends with a blend of stylish wit, classic elegance and the typically playful and provocative charm that signals the presence of Swatch and Swiss design.

Spring/Summer Collection 2009
T
he launch of the spring/ summer collection by Esprit timewear is marked by a new concept and a new structure: For the first time ever in the history of this lifestyle brand, the men’s watches and the “houston” watches will get their very own segments within the seasonal collection. Up to now, all the watch lines passed through the key processes together – from product development to window display –, often including “men” as well as “houston” models. These segments have now officially declared their independence, and Esprit timewear has taken the first steps to establish their sovereignty, until they become fully independent during the next year. What does this mean for the product range? Within the Esprit parent brand, “men” has already established itself as a strong segment of its own with men’s fashion. In the course of the year 2009, Esprit timewear will also begin to cater more than ever to the particular needs and tastes
78 I PREMIUM - Spring 2009
No Limits
PREMIUM I WATCHES of its male clientele by projecting these elements into the products and address them more directly, not only in terms of quantity but also quality. The worldwide success of the “houston” trademark will be developed further, while the brand’s basically feminine image will not only be preserved but consolidated in the “ladies” line. What does this mean for the collection’s structure? The heterogeneous market will be observed more closely and individually, as will the trends and target group of each of the homogeneous segments. Designs with new features will reflect their specific segment. Communication will be separated and allow true identification for the target groups.
half-bangles. And the latest fashion from the Paris Fashion Week: the futuristic look, which finds its expression in Esprit timewear with a LCD and sharp outlines. On top of that, as usual, you will find elegant and timeless classics, which Esprit timewear – no matter how trendy – would never want to abandon. Over the entire collection, fresh colors, such as white, black, gold, and rose gold are dominant.
“Men” debuts a powerful new addition: the popular models with their five-line LCD now come with a leather coating that completes their trendy futuristic look. Apart from these, the men’s segment consists of elegant classics, sports models, and country designs. Sturdiness and functionality are key features that become all the more prominent with plain and king-sized shapes. Strong metal and leather dominate over rubber bands for the active athlete.
Houston
Leaving Nothing to Be Desired: The Collection From now on, Esprit timewear will presents its lines only twice a year, but the collections will be larger and more diverse – currently with a total of 248 models, 169 of them brandnew. The indispensable style for ladies: The upcoming trend for the next summer season with clear cuts, large prints, or simply suntanned skin demands extravagant accessories. For this combination, Esprit timewear offers a collection of glamorous lines with sparkling stones, metallic colors, and high gloss. An unique effect is achieved by the new sophisticated surface structures of dials, leather straps and metal wrist bands, or by the brand-new combination with enamel insets. Debonair leather models with a touch of countryside meet very feminine bracelets and innovative
79 I PREMIUM - Spring 2009
PREMIUM I WATCHES Cool, subdued shades like black or gray as well as two-tone gold and silver are more frequent than warm brown. New to the “houston” segment are broad lines and models that achieve interesting effects with enamel varnish on their metal bands. The families featuring large numbers 12 and 6 on their displays have been expanded with a few new members.
The Highlights “Square button” comes in the wake of the success enjoyed by the popular favorite, “hot button.” This half-bangle watch fascinates with the contrast between its clear and simple lines and an exciting snakeskin look in white, which keeps the line elegant and feminine in spite of its angular shape. The half-bangle is available in matte silver and shiny gold as well as black and rose gold. “Feel-good” bangles doubling as watches are still hip. “starlite” adds girlishness to glamour by giving opulent stone studding an airy and organic shape. The rest of the watch consists of shiny metal in either gold or silver, or in black, rose gold or silver with pink stones. “vegas” is the absolute novelty among the “houstons”: not only the overall silhouette has been widened but also the dial. A second outline and zirconia along the vertical make for an interesting play with balance. The metal band is partially matt and partially shiny. And of course, all the “houston” characteristics are present: asymmetry, purity, plus case and strap forming a single line. The overwhelming success of “silver heart houston” with hearts and large digits at the 12 and 6 called for a
80 I PREMIUM - Spring 2009
basic version for every type and every day. The pure black of the new dial, zirconia on the numbers, and a highly polished metal band lend an extremely elegant and noble look to the “12/6 houston.” There are literally no limits for “no limits” in terms of sportiness, function, and looks. The sporty chronograph for men combines a tough rubber strap with a linear structure that continues on the dial. Large digits on the bezel and on the dial, tachymeter-style “eyes” plus scattered red accents alternating with black and white not only translate into a powerful expression but also optimize readability. Waterproof up to 10 bar, “no limits” stands for unlimited sportiness – not only in a sports car. The popular “central roman” has undergone a subtle facelift with its angular stone frame. Its successor, “splendid roman,” stays true to
its classic elegance with Roman numerals whose outline forms a rectangle on the outside and an oval on the inside. The metal wrist band comes in high gloss or matt. Esprit watches are available at Time Center. www.esprit.com

the key element of new creations entirely realized in diamonds, complementing the pieces in colored gems offered in the original Elisia collection. A compound word, “Elisia” epitomizes the essence of the collection. It recalls a woman’s name, suggesting the idea of feminine elegance that inspires the entire line of jewels, and, at the same time, evokes the word “ellipse”, which refers to the elliptical shapes of the collection deeply rooted into the Bulgari design. Rounded rather than angular shapes have always been favoured by Bulgari. Of these, the ellipse is certainly the most difficult of all to shape, and thus the most intriguing. It recurs frequently in the historical and architectural fragments of ancient Rome, who’s rounded and elliptical architectural motifs have often inspired Bulgari designers. The company has continued over the years to be seduced by the timeless beauty of the ellipse. In 2007, that passion led Bulgari to offer a modern reinterpretation of the oval motif frequently found in the jewelry designs of the 1970’s and 1980’s. Anniversary Gems & Jewelry
H
istorically, celebrations have been linked to life cycles: harvest-time, the turning of seasons, and life events, such as the birth of a child or a wedding. The anniversary of such events has always been a legitimate reason

to celebrate: we remember the special day and we honor the time that has past since the event took place. With wedding anniversaries, there is so much to celebrate, and jewelry has come to represent some of our feelings for the occasion. Over
time, each wedding anniversary has become linked to particular flowers and types of gifts, including particular gemstones.

Greek “amethystos” which means “not drunken.”
Garnet:
Onyx:
(2nd Anniversary)
(7th Anniversary)
Break open a pomegranate: see the tiny glossy red seeds? Now you can see why garnet comes from the Latin name of pomegranate, granatum . To the ancient world, garnet was a tiny glossy red gem, bursting with fire and brilliance.
A secretive stone - colors vary from black or white to translucent with striated layers of red, pink, brown, and yellow, Onyx is considered a memory stone.
Pearls:
Tourmaline’s name comes from the Sinhalese tura mali , which means “mixed stone.” Available in a rainbow of colors and color combinations, tourmaline lives up to its name. Legend says tourmaline inspires artistic expression and enhances your intuition. Certainly this gem’s varied palette inspires designers to create jewelry to suit every mood.
(3rd Anniversary)
Pearls are calcified objects made by oysters and are usually pale white or cream colored, though darker blue, gray, and even black variations exist. They vary in size from slightly bigger than a grain of sand to the size of a baseball.
Blue Topaz: (4th Anniversary)
The beautiful cool blue of the sky is captured in blue topaz. This pastel blue gem is a designer favorite since it is affordable and available in a wide range of gem shapes and sizes. Its bright and lively color looks right set in both yellow and white metals. You’ll find that this versatile gem complements almost everything in your wardrobe, from browns and grays to vivid tones.
Sapphire: (5th Anniversary)
Sapphire comes from the Greek word for blue, sappheiros , and this gem provides the most beautiful blues of the gem kingdom. The ancient Persians believed the earth rests on a giant sapphire. Its reflection, they said, made the sky blue.
Amethyst: (6th Anniversary)
Treasured by the ancient Romans, amethyst was worn as a talisman to ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus. Amethyst comes from the
Tourmaline: (8th Anniversary)
Lapis Lazuli: (9th Anniversary)
The beautiful blues in paintings from the Renaissance are thanks to the blue of lapis lazuli, the opaque blue gem material that was the secret ingredient in ultramarine, the valuable pigment that all the old masters used to capture the rich blues of the sea and sky and the robes of the Virgin Mary. The color wasn’t duplicated by any other substance until 1834 but even now, some argue there is no substitute: unlike other pigments ultramarine centuries old still glows with rich color today.
Diamond Jewelry: (10th Anniversary)
Considered by some to be the purest expression of gemstones the earth has ever produced, their clarity and ability to refract the entire light spectrum is peerless in the gem world, they are said to be the hardest substance produced by nature. Composed of pure carbon, formed by thousands of years of
intense heat and pressure, they are much in demand for industrial uses as well as for jewelry and gemstone healing because of their hardness and purity. Diamonds and roses are often considered the only two things from nature that have reached their evolutionary pinnacles.
Turquoise: (11th Anniversary)
Turquoise, with its distinctive robin’s egg blue, is among the oldest known gemstones. It graced the necks of Egyptian Pharaohs and adorned the ceremonial dress of early Native Americans.
Jadeite: (12th Anniversary)
Since at least 2950 BC, jade has been treasured in China as the royal gemstone. Jade is a bridge between the spiritual and the material world. The Chinese character for jade, yu , resembles a capital I with a line across the middle: the top represents the heavens, the bottom the earth, and the center section, mankind. To this day, many people believe that jade will protect them from harm.
Citrine: (13th Anniversary)
Shining with a golden glow, people have long treasured citrine as a gift from the sun. Citrine, a variety of transparent quartz, is named after the French citron , or lemon. Its color ranges from a juicy lemon yellow to a bright orangey brown. In all of its glorious golden and yellow colors, citrine is the most affordable of all the earth-toned gemstones, the perfect complement to all the warm tones in your wardrobe. Its sunny shades are also a lovely way to light up black and gray or contrast against blue.

Opal: (14th Anniversary)
A beautiful opal is one of a kind: a natural artwork with a unique pattern of rainbow flashes of color unlike any other. It’s as individual as your personality. You may prefer an opal that serenely glows with pinpoint flashes of the blues and greens of the sea and sky. Or you may fall in love with a gem that flashes broad patterns of red and yellow, with all the bright festivity of carnival in Rio. And with its rainbow appeal, opal complements everything in your wardrobe.
Ruby: (15th Anniversary)
Throughout most of recorded

history, ruby has been the world’s most valued gemstone. Even diamond was considered common in comparison to the supreme beauty and value of this glowing red gem. Named from the Latin word for its hue, ruber, ruby is the epitome of the boldest of colors: the gem of desire, passion, courage, and emotion.
Emerald: (20th Anniversary)
The timeless appeal of emerald can be summed up in three words written in the year 50 AD: “Nothing greens greener.” Roman historian Pliny the Elder was explaining the desire for the supreme green gem not only in Rome but throughout
the ancient world.

PREMIUM I INTERVIEW that now people are moving toward investing in gold and diamonds, as some consider it as a safer investment than stocks. Also, I think that a stronger interest in quality and design will take place as well as an increase in the specialization in diamonds and diamond jewelry in the local market.
What steps have you taken to increase your expertise in the diamond and gold field?
5 Questions With Premium In each issue of Premium, five questions are posed to leaders in the Jordanian watch and jewelry market to gain some insight on how they achieved their success. In this issue, Premium had the privilege to sit down with Talal Al Bitar, Kayali Jewelry sales executive.
How did you get started in the jewelry business? After graduating from university with a Business Administration degree, I entered the gold and jewelry market by working with our family business which provided me with a vast experience in the gold and jewelry market in Jordan. Five years later, I had the opportunity to join Kayali Jewelry. I’ve been with Kayali Jewelry for the past 6 years now and it’s been a great experience that has helped me gain knowledge and become a strong diamond expert.
What major changes have you seen or experienced in the Jordanian jewelry market during the last 5 years? There have been many good

changes in the market. Customers know much more about diamonds, precious gems and fine jewelry. Overall, customers have more experience when it comes to diamonds and gold which has lead to an increase in the quality of production of both diamonds and gold. Also, the demand for unique styles has increased as well as the demand for higher diamond quality, something that is always available at Kayali Jewelry. Also, jewelers have become more specialized especially in the diamond field. Another change that has taken place is the appreciation of international brands. For example, at Kayali we have multiple international brands available to our customers such as Pomellato, Chaumet, Splendore, Gucci and Bulgari Jewelry. I believe this is due to the fact that today’s customers are much more exposed to the international arena than before.
Where do you see this market in the next five years?
Despite the world’s current economic condition, I believe the gold and diamond market will be unaffected. The reason for this is
One of the most important steps that I could have ever taken was joining Kayali Jewelry. With Kayali Jewelry I am always learning from the best diamond experts in town, and with Mr. Samir Kayali’s key leadership, I am sure to continue on this path of becoming a stronger expert. Also, Kayali Jewelry has facilitated special and exclusive diamond trainings for us, for example I was able to attend a course with the title of “Diamond Grading Course” which was instructed by diamond experts from Belgium. The course taught me even more about diamonds and their grades.
What in your opinion has been your greatest career accomplishment?
I would have to say that being part of the driving force which contributed to Kayali Jewelry being considered as one of the top jewelers in Jordan has been a great accomplishment for me. Of course such an accomplishment wouldn’t have been possible without the direction and support of Mr. Samir Kayali. Also, I would have to say that as Kayali Jewelry we are very proud of our position in the market and the loyalty we receive from our customers; it’s always our pleasure to provide our customers with what they really want including exceptional customer service.
