Georgia Bone and Joint Welcomes Dr. Shivam Desai NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com
G
eorgia Bone and Joint is excited to announce the continued growth of their practice with the addition of Dr. Shivam Desai. Shivam Desai, M.D., is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specialized in diagnosing and treating hip and knee conditions. His primary area of expertise is total joint replacement surgery as well as non-operative care. “My goal is always to avoid surgery. If I can return a patient to their original level of health without operating, that’s incredibly rewarding,” he says. Dr. Desai has extensive training in minimally invasive surgery focused on rapid recovery as well as robotic assisted total joints. His practice also includes general orthopedics and fracture care. “Some patients come to me having previously lived an active lifestyle, but now are in so much pain that they can’t sleep at night,” he explains. Upon meeting those patients, Dr. Desai says he likes to “figure out the level

of activity their life demands, and then return them to that state.” Dr.Desai grew up in Greenville, South Carolina, but knows Coweta County well, having spent many of his summers visiting family in Newnan. He obtained his Bachelor degree from Duke University, where he was a recipient of several academic scholarships. He then went to medical school at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. While at MUSC, he was selected into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and was awarded several merit-based scholarships. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Maryland Medical System which included training at the world- renowned R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr.Desai subsequently completed a dedicated Joint Replacement fellowship in Adelaide, Australia at Flinders Medical Centre where he learned the latest advancements in robotics, computer navigation, and complex joint reconstruction

from surgeons from across the world. He has published multiple articles and presented at national meetings in order to advance the field of orthopedics and optimize outcomes for his patients. He is an active participant in the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and International Congress for Joint Reconstruction (ICJR). Dr. Desai believes in using the latest evidence-based treatments in order to get patients back to doing what they love with or without surgery. Dr. Desai says he is proud to join the Georgia Bone and Joint team for several reasons: “When my wife and I moved back from Australia, we knew we wanted to live in the Southeast to be close to family, but it was also very important to me to find an innovative group of doctors to mentor me as I began my career.” He explained, “Georgia Bone and Joint utilizes the latest
technology, along with evidence-based medicine, to provide the quickest recovery possible to our patients.” He is especially excited about Georgia Bone and Joint’s new telemedicine program, which was developed during the early days of the pandemic. He hopes to see it become a permanent option for patients who need accessible care, but can’t make it into the Georgia Bone and Joint campus. Dr. Desai claims, since joining the Georgia Bone and Joint family, that he has “the best job in the world. Restoring people to health and giving them a second chance at their originally active lifestyle is so very rewarding.” Dr. Desai and his wife are excited to return to Georgia and be closer to family. In their spare time, they enjoy spending time outdoors playing tennis, hiking, and traveling. Call 770-502-2175 to schedule an appointment. Learn more at Georgia BoneandJoint.org.

Newnan Utilities responds to devastating storm damage

The Same Great Service Since 1974 SALES • SERVICE • INSTALLATION
NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com
In response to the devastating storms that hit Newnan Thursday night, Newnan Utilities crews, along with crews from other utilities from near and far, have worked around the clock to restore power for all of the outages as quickly and as safely as possible. “We apologize for the disruption of service as a result of the storms,” a press release from Newnan Utilities stated. “We truly appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding as our crews work to restore power and clean up downed powerlines and debris.” To restore power to the community as quickly as possible, Newnan Utilities encouraged everyone to stay home and keep off the roads so that the public safety workers and crews can clear the roads of trees, powerlines and debris.
Newnan Utilities said for anyone who is using generators, to use them safely and not to backfeed. Backfeeding is when a portable generator is tied directly into a home’s electric panel. Doing so could energize your house and endanger utility workers. “When trouble hits our community, I’m always in awe of our employees and their dedication to serve our customers and the community. I’m forever grateful for their commitment to work day and night to restore services as quickly and safely as possible,” said Dennis McEntire, Newnan Utilities General Manager in the release. Continuous updates will be posted on Newnan Utilities’ social media channels on Facebook@NewnanUtilitiesGA, Instagram @NewnanUtilities and Twitter @ NewnanUtilities .
