and Angie Dolan narrowly escaped with their lives after a tree nearly split their house in two the night a tornado tore through
Newnan. Just after midnight on March 26, a powerful storm pummeled Coweta County, bringing with it an EF4 tornado. The storm demolished homes, f lattened trees and felled power lines. Dolan didn’t use to believe in miracles. He does now. After a long day at work, Dolan returned to his home off of Sixth Street at around 10 p.m. During the day, he had tracked the storm. It looked like it was going to be a big one. When he got home, he told his wife to get dressed. They might have to f lee if the storm proved severe enough. The storm sirens started around 10:30 p.m. Phone alerts began shortly thereafter. Dolan had gone outside to watch the approaching storm coming in from downtown Newnan. “It was nothing but lightning,” Dolan said. “I remember thinking, this is beautiful.” Not long after, he heard a loud hiss coming from the south near Newnan High School. the noise grew louder, Dolan knew it was time to get inside. He and his wife, along with their cats, bunkered down inside their bathroom. They didn’t have a tub, but instead a walk-in shower with a pony wall. Little did they know, the pony wall would save their lives. Meteorologists had predicted the tornado would hit at 12:06 a.m. They were right on the money, Dolan said. “Everyone says (a tornado) sounds like a freight train. I live in Newnan, I’ve seen the trains go by. This did not sound like a train. It sounded like heavy, heavy wind and waves constantly crashing,” he said. Dolan used his body to shield his wife and their 18-year-old cat as the heavy winds shook their house, shattering the windows. They could hear trees snapping. It sounded like everything in the house was spinning, Dolan said. Then it grew quiet as if the Dolans were in the eye of the storm. For a moment, they thought about running, but just as quickly as the storm had died down, it reared up again louder than ever. Dolan could see out the broken bathroom window. The world outside reminded him of television static. There was a loud crack. Dolan saw a large object falling towards them. Husband and wife held on tight, their screams lost amongst the din, as a massive tree plummeted onto their home. “There are only two times I have screamed, ‘I think I’m going to die,’” Dolan said. “One was when I was on a rollercoaster as a kid. The other time was that night.” The tree crashed through the ceiling. Debris fell on top of the Dolans, pinning them in the shower. If it wasn’t for the pony wall, the tree would have crushed them on the spot. It took 15 minutes or so for the Dolans to break free from the rubble. They were bruised, scratched up and in shock, but relatively unharmed. “We were so lucky to have survived,” Dolan said. Almost everything they owned was either water damaged or wrecked by de-
bris. They grabbed what they could and made their escape. Dolan bought the house in 1997 after he had gotten out of college. The house dates back to shortly after the Civil War. The Dolans have lived there for more than 25 years. They will have to rebuild their home from the ground up. Once the tree is removed, the house will collapse on itself, Dolan said. It might take a year or two before the house is rebuilt. Despite losing his home, Dolan believes everything will work out. He loves Newnan too much to leave it. Newnan is strong, the people resilient. They will rebuild. “There was such an outpouring of support. I saw so many people out there helping each other,” Dolan said. “It’s restored my faith in humanity.” After the ordeal, Dolan has some advice for others. “Get yourself a bug-out bag with a first aid kit, f lashlight and a crowbar,” Dolan said. “You never know when you’re going to need a crowbar.” “On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross. The emblem of suffering and shame. And I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain. So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross) till my trophies at last I lay down. I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it some day for a crown. To the old rugged cross will ever be true. It’s shame and reproach gladly bear. Then he’ll call me some day to my home far away where his glory forever I’ll share. And I’ll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross) till my trophies at last I lay down. And I will cling to the old rugged cross and exhange it some day for a crown. I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it some day for a crown.” songwriters: Mark Hayes, George Bennard

All Coweta County schools closed through spring break BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com
All Coweta schools will remain closed until at least April 12, when Coweta County School System students and staff are expected to return from spring break. “This closure … will allow our emergency responders and utility providers time to focus on those most in need,” Superintendent Evan Horton said. Families of students at Newnan High School and Atkinson Elementary School – both extensively damaged by last week’s EF4 tornado – were notified Sunday that their schools would not reopen before the Coweta County School System returns from spring break April 12. On Monday, school officials added Arnall Middle, Central Educational Center, East Coweta High, Elm Street Elementary, Evans Middle, Jefferson Parkway Elementary, Maggie Brown Middle, Newnan Crossing Elementary, Ruth Hill Elementary, Smokey Road Middle, Welch Elementary, Westside Burwell, Western Elementary, Winston Dowdell Academy and White Oak Elementary to the list of schools that would remain closed through spring break. The decision to close all schools was made Tuesday morning, and employees and families of students were notified around midday. “Last week’s tornado continues to have a profound impact on parts of our community,” Horton wrote in a statement announcing the closures. “District staff members and I have visited and assessed affected parts of our community and are heartbroken from the damage that our community has suffered. We recognize that daily school operations for all Coweta County Schools have been greatly impacted by this disaster.” All schools remain without internet, so no remote classes are planned at this time. Horton said the decision followed guidance from emergency management officials. The school system’s transpor-
tation facility suffered storm damage, so transportation issues are a major factor. “Our facility sits right on the edge of the heavily damaged area, so getting to it and getting buses out is a problem,” Horton said. “For students in heavily affected areas, getting to and from and through is an issue. And of course no internet is a concern.” Horton said the priority is to avoid overtaxing services and resources currently needed in critically damaged zones. He said utility crews are working around the clock with assistance from law enforcement – including school resource officers – which can negatively impact school operations. “Opening when you already have first responders that have a lot going on makes it very difficult to not compromise safety,” he said. “We have to make sure we’re as safe as possible and not taking any unnecessary risks.” Newnan City Manager Cleatus Phillips thanked school officials for following guidance from emergency management. “They’re trying to be courteous to our crews and everyone out working the storm,” he said during a called meeting of the Newnan City Council Monday. “They’re staying off the road out of respect to us.” Horton said students, employees and families remain the school system’s priority, and he urged communication with schools. “Many schools are trying to have students check in with their homeroom teachers so they can be marked as safe,” he said. “Our principals are concerned about their staff and kids, especially in the most affected areas.” Horton said the school system will continue to consult with local government, law enforcement and emergency management to plan a safe opening for schools on April 12. “Please continue to stay safe and take care of each other,” he said.

NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com
Sharing history took a hiatus recently while the Senoia Area Historical Society’s Museum closed during major reconstruction to replace four unstable chimneys/fireplaces. While the doors were closed to the public, the volunteers continued to work on projects and improvements throughout the museum, according to a release from SAHS. The museum reopened for tours Friday, April 2. from 1 to 4 p.m., with a fresh perspective and some new Senoia artifacts on
display. Hereafter, regular hours of Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. will resume. Private tours can also be arranged by contacting the Museum Director, Maureen Schuyler, at 352-428-9916. Additionally, new video vignettes will be hosted by SAHS Museum docents each week on Facebook and Instagram featuring various artifacts and stories from around the museum, beginning March 29. Each vignette lasts about a minute, so check out the social media sources for a weekly Senoia “Museum Moment.”
Congressman Ferguson tours storm damage in Coweta NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com
U.S. Congressman Drew Ferguson, R-Ga., recently surveyed storm damage and met with state and local officials in Coweta County after a tornado tore through Newnan on Thursday evening and Friday morning. Ferguson and members of his staff also visited the Coweta County 911 Center and donated supplies to first responders. “The damage to the Newnan community caused by the tornado is absolutely heartbreaking, and my prayers continue to be with all those impacted by the devastation,” Rep. Ferguson said. “In the midst of the destruction, we are seeing the fortitude that exists here in Coweta County. People are
shining through.” “Volunteers are coming to help this community recover, and I’m confident we can and will rebuild stronger than ever. We are very fortunate as Georgians to have incredible first responders, emergency management personnel, public safety and local leaders who will go to bat for our state,” Ferguson added. If you’ve been affected by the recent storms, you can find more resources and assistance by visiting ready.gov or by calling Congressman Ferguson’s Washington, D.C., office at 202-225-5901.
