Signs featuring a cartoon-like “hosta ge” a re poppi n g up a lon g m ajor highways a nd nea r intersections in Newnan, and are causing quite a stir. The postings are advertisements for a somewhat controversial new fitnessinspired trend, the Hostage Run. “How about a little bit of respect for the Americans, armed forces, media and so forth who have been held captive with their hands bound and a bag over their heads and beheaded or shot,” wrote Facebook commenter Susan Morrell. Other social media commenters are demanding the run be discontinued, out of respect for military personnel and other real-life hostages who have suffered or faced death. “As a military spouse of 21 years, I find it completely and utterly disturbing that anyone would allow this,” commented Newnan resident Renea Lynn Carl via Facebook. “Am I the only one disturbed by this?” Carl is one of many residents who have spotted the signs and voiced complaints as well as inquiries to the local media. The Newnan Times-Herald was able to reach one of the event organizers, Mike Harris of Peachtree City. Harris explained that the upcoming event is set to take place in Hampton on Nov. 26 and, despite the local outrage, the run is “just a fun, challenging run.”

“I hate to think that anyone would have a negative opinion about the run,” Harris said, noting that the local reactions to advertisements were “a little disheartening.” The event logo and the idea to mentally challenge oneself in this way are being wrongly associated with images shown on the news, on television and in the movies, according to Harris. The run organizer said he had participated in several stimulating, military-
style obstacle courses after injuring his arm. Harris claimed the courses were not only fun, but also both mentally and physically demanding — and he was inspired. “Obstacle courses do not necessarily depend on a person’s physical ability. The fun and the challenge of it can also be mental,” Harris said. “This run can
