t may be a fictional account of growing up in a Southern town built around a major university, but the stories in “College Town” come straight from Athens, Georgia, native Doug Vinson’s life. His father was a history professor at the University of Georgia for 35 years, and Vinson grew up near fraternity row. His Fridays were filled with live music from legends like the Tams, the Drifters, James Brown and B.B. King as they performed at parties. He played pickup football on the field where the Dawgs practiced, suffered through math class alongside future athletes and musicians, and absorbed the rich culture and unique nature of Athens during the 1960s and 70s. “I was just immersed in it,” Vinson. “It wasn’t MayVINSON . 2

VINSON FROM PAGE 1

berry, but it was close. It was the golden era, when people were connected. You couldn’t go too far without someone’s mama knowing what you were doing.” It seemed inevitable that Vinson would end up writing a book. After all, he covered everything from desegregation and lectures from academic darlings like Kurt Vonnegut to Elton John’s flamboyant Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Tour. But his decades-long career as a journalist, PR professional and college professor – with his writing passing through so many hands that it often became “lifeless and totally boring” – got in the way. It was only after he retired from teaching and began working a series of what he calls “blue-collar jobs” that his long-dormant memories began to shape themselves into a novel. “It turned out that I needed to do manual work to get my mind clear,” said Vinson. “I always had a good ear for people and characters, but I never wanted to write anything more than three pages. But finally, after all these years, I was able to put these words into decent storytelling form without worrying about pleasing (my bosses).”

The result is a nostalgic nod to his hometown, a coming-of-age story set in a Southern town in the 1970s. It centers on a group of four childhood friends who are now in college – the hot party guy, the socially conscious smart guy, the broke- but- talented musician and the average everyman – with a plentiful, colorful cast of supporting characters representing the diversity and eccentricities of Athens. “It’s a little fiction built around a lot of true stories, because we all know you can’t make this stuff up – especially when it comes to campus life,” Vinson said. “It works as a very good setting.” He wrote the book with his wife, June, – a critical care nurse to whom he’s been married 40 years. The two live in Newnan and have collaborated on projects in the past, including the well-received “A Redneck Opera.” “She’s analytical and logical, which are not my strong points,” said Vinson, who said his wife’s love and persistence were crucial on the project. “I knew the stories were good and mildly amusing, and she helped me organize and keep it focused. I’ve been waiting 40 years to write this story, and I wanted to get it out before I croaked.” Vinson, a self-proclaimed conservative evangelical, grew up in a Christian home. His grandfather was a missionary in the Belgian Congo, and his parents were among the first public school teachers in Athens in the 1940s.

“College Town” is a novel 40 years in the making for Doug Vinson, who grew up in Athens in the shadow of the University of Georgia.

Despite holding a Ph.D. from Duke University and “writing real books,” Vinson’s father was not among the wealthy (and possibly mythical) academics who populate some college towns. “He was the classic mild-mannered professor type,” Vinson said. “These folks didn’t make any money. We say that in our family, we’re allergic to money – we’re all teachers and preachers.” What they lacked in wealth, they made up for in humor. “All of the men in our family have an offbeat, low-key sense of humor,” said Vinson, a fan of comedians like Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett and Lewis Grizzard. “It takes some work to do that – , to know people and understand them to make them come real.” Journalism requires humor and the ability to easily move between groups and situations, traits that served Vinson well as a reporter for the student-sourced Red and Black newspaper at UGA, where he earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees, and later at The Athens Banner-Herald. In fact, a stack of yellowed clippings from that era not only served as the basis for parts of his novel but also brought up a particularly poignant memory. “We had fantastic lectures, including one from Truman Capote,” he said. “It was a hot April night, and he was sitting in a pink, backlit wicker chair on the steps of Memorial Hall, on the main drag of the quadrangle. There were 900 nonchalant, super-cool hippie frat kids listening to him. He read ‘A Christmas Memory’ in his quiet, weak little voice, and they started putting down their red Solo cups one by one

and got completely quiet. It was truly magical.” Vinson’s personal memories wind their way through his fictional account, and while the novel touches on many uncomfortable aspects of a turbulent era, it remains as reverent as its author. “I don’t say a negative thing, and I’m still telling the truth,” he said. “I loved this place, loved this town and all the blessings and fantastic things that went on there at that time.” “College Town” is for sale locally at Corner Arts and Gillyweed in Newnan, Heirloom Bakery and Gifts in Sharpsburg and One Magnolia Gifts in Peachtree City, as well as at the UGA Bookstore and amazon.com.

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love Thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that Curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you: That you may be the children of your Father which is in Matthew 5:43-45 Heaven.”

T

he Coweta County 4-H Horse and Pony Club recently held its seventh annual Angela Dennis Memorial Fun Show. Dennis was the club leader for many years prior to her death in 2014. “Angela was loved by all and helped many 4-H'ers fall in love with the equestrian world,” according to a release from Coweta 4-H. The show was a fun mix of Western classes, English classes, fun classes and contest events. The day started with the judged classes ranging from flat classes to jumping and trail classes. There was something for everyone regardless of skill, according to Coweta 4-H. The show offered a novice level for beginners of all ages, junior level for ex-

perienced fourth through eighth graders, senior level for experienced ninth through 12th graders and an adult level. During the fun class events there was a costume class, toilet paper race, bareback buck and a jumping Texas class. “It's always great to see the costumes and the creativity that these kids come up with for the costume class,” according to Coweta 4-H. One of the favorites is the toilet paper race, when two riders hold a short piece of toilet paper and ride side-by-side. The last team riding without breaking their toilet paper wins. The rain brought some extra fun at the end of the day as the riders finished up a great day with barrel racing in the rain, according to Coweta 4-H.

Craft supplies donated to veterans

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 57 recently visited Trinka Davis Veterans Village recently to deliver craft items for the veteran residents who have been confined to the facility since COVID-19 began. Working on crafts helps them stay active, according to Janet Alford with VFW Post 2667 Auxiliary. “We wanted to let them know they are not forgotten even though they cannot receive visitors,” Alford said. Pilot Company offering round-up for Wreaths Across America NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com

I

n recognition of all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, the Pilot Company recently announced an in-store round-up fundraiser benefiting Wreaths Across America through the end of the year. The funds raised will support Wreaths Across America’s goal to place more than 2.2 million wreaths in all 50 states to remember and honor fallen soldiers during the holidays. In celebration of Veterans Day, from Nov. 9-15, the company will offer all veterans one free breakfast combo, valid at participating U.S. Pilot and Flying J Travel Centers, according to a release from the company. “The holiday season is a special time to remember and recognize veterans for their sacrifice,” said James A. Haslam II, a U.S. Army veteran and founder of Pilot Company in the release. “On behalf of our 28,000 team members, we sincerely thank the men and women who’ve selflessly served our country. We appreciate Wreaths Across America’s mission of remember, honor and teach and invite our guests to partner with us in support of their goal to lay a wreath on every hero’s grave.” From now through Dec. 31, those who visit any of the 750 company-operated stores in the U.S., including participating Pilot and Flying J travel centers and One9 Fuel Network stores, can opt to round up purchases to the nearest whole dollar and donate the additional amount to Wreaths Across America. In remembrance of the company’s hometown heroes, Pilot Company is donating $20,000 and contributing $20,000 from the round-up campaign to support the Wreaths Across America ceremonies in Knoxville, Tennessee. “It is partners like Pilot Company that continue to step up and amaze us with

their generosity, not just with the financial support of sponsoring wreaths, but in their commitment to the veterans in the industry and in their communities that deserve recognition,” said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. “This new round-up program is beyond anything we could have expected or hoped for, and we are grateful to Pilot Company and all the professional drivers and carriers that help us move the mission.” The round-up fundraiser is part of Pilot Company’s long-standing support of Wreaths Across America, including helping to fuel the organization’s traveling Mobile Education Exhibit to visit cities across the U.S. The exhibit is open to the public for free tours at several locations throughout the year and recently made a tour stop on Oct. 20 at the Pilot Travel Center in Mebane, North Carolina. Pilot Company also supports and is honored to participate in Wreaths Across America’s celebration of veterans in the trucking industry, recognizing and thanking the veteran professional drivers that transport the wreaths to more than 2,200 locations across the country for the annual holiday wreath-laying ceremonies. Pilot Company also will celebrate Veterans Day with a week-long special offer for all U.S. military veterans. From Nov. 9-15, all veterans are invited to enjoy a free Pilot Coffee of any size and one free breakfast offering, such as the french toast sausage, egg and cheese sandwich. The Veterans Day Breakfast Combo offer is available through the Pilot Flying J app and is redeemable at participating U.S. Pilot and Flying J travel centers. of the Week

My name is:

ella is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix at the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society. She’s about 5 years old and is the “sweetest dog,” said Katie Whittington, dog team director for NCHS. “She’s great with dogs, cats, kids,” Whittington said. And she’s a couch potato. NCHS took Bella to a recent trunk or treat, and she did very well. “She was surrounded by kids in costume and people, and she just loved them all,” said NCHS Vice President Sandy Hiser. “All she did was lay on the couch and get loved on.” Bella had been at the Coweta Animal Services Shelter for over a year when she was rescued by NCHS. She’s spayed and up to date on all her shots. She recently got her annual round of vaccines and is good for another year, said Whittington. Dog adoption fees from NCHS are $200. To adopt Bella, visit www.nchsrescue.org , click on “adopt” then “adopt from NCHS” and fill out the dog/puppy application.

allon Willeby, owner of CAKE by Callon, is a contestant in this year’s “The Greatest Baker” competition. The Greatest Baker competition is the world’s largest online competition for bakers, according to greatestbaker.com . The competition is hosted by Jen Barney, who is a two-time Food Network Baking Champion and owner of Meringue Bakery and Cafe. The winner of the competition will receive recognition as The Greatest Baker of 2020, a year's supply of Stuffed Puffs, will be featured in Bake from Scratch Magazine, and take home $10,000. Willeby said she’s been baking for over 20 years and baking professionally for over 10 years. She said she worked in pastry shops and culinary kitchens before she set out to start her own business, CAKE by Callon, out of her house. She said she specializes in decorating cakes, such as birthday and wedding cakes, but bakes other items as well. Willeby said she loves making cinnamon rolls and also bakes pies and cookies. Willeby said she grew up baking with her grandmother, and their family has passed down her recipes after she passed away. “Dessert has always been a big part of our family,” Willeby said. “When we get together, there’s more dessert than the main course.” Willeby said she heard about the competition from one of her baking friends, who encouraged her to try out for it. To register for the competition, Willeby said she had to answer an online questionnaire and submit photos of things she has baked. The winner of the competition is based on votes from family and friends on social media. She said voting for the top 10 lasts through Nov. 5. The competition ends on Dec. 10.

Callon Willeby, owner of CAKE by Callon, is a contestant in this year’s “The Greatest Baker” Competition.

Willeby said people can vote for her every 24 hours on her The Greatest Baker page at greatestbaker.com/2020/ callon-willeby . She said voters have to have a Facebook account in order to cast a vote. She said if she wins the competition, she would use the prize money to open up a food truck, and it would get her closer to her goal of having her own storefront. “I love what I do,” Willeby said. “It truly makes me happy when I am baking and learning something new that I have never done before.” “Food brings people together, and that’s why I love it!” Willeby added. Keep up with Willeby in The Greatest Baker competition through her CAKE by Callon Facebook page .
