Newnan businessman Joe Crain and retired airline executive Bob Coggin, from left, both attended Western School as children. They are giving back, with a donation of funds for music instruments through the Coweta Community Foundation.
The spirit of Christmas giving started a little early this year for Welcome community natives Joe Crain and Bob Coggin. The two Western School alums pooled some of their resources together with the Coweta Community Foundation to supplement
their alma mater’s music program, which has had to deal with budget cuts resulting from belt tightening school systemwide in Coweta County. “I saw the two of them at the alumni dinner, and I told them we could use a little help,” said Terrie Wells, Western Elementary School choral director, at the presentation Thursday. She said she had her eye on

so-called “Orff Instruments,” which are musical instruments that are similar to xylophones, except that each instrument is devoted to playing a single note. “Carl Orff developed them,” she said. Anyone who’s ever listened to Sean Hannity’s radio program is familiar with his signature, bombastic choral piece, “Carmina Burana,” which opens the radio host’s

State tourism group experiences flavor of small East Coweta town State tourism officials now know what Senoia has to offer. Eight people with the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s tourism and marketing staff
visited Senoia Friday — exclaiming over storage space in the Southern Living Idea House, examining jewelry and home decor items in downtown shops, soaking up the historic atmosphere and enjoying food and drink from two local eateries. Tray Baggarly, director of
event services for the Coweta County Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Pam Mayer, the CVB’s welcome center coordinator, greeted the group and outlined the day’s itinerary. Scott Tigchelaar, president of Raleigh Studios at Riverwood, took the state
program each day (just before Bruce Hornsby’s “That’s Just the Way It Is” kicks in). “With these instruments, the students become the music,” said Wells. “They just love it.” Coggin and Crain both said they love to give back to their school, which gave them their start. “I grew up in this community

New Xpress Bus park and ride lot opens on Monday By SARAH FAY CAMPBELL sarah@newnan.com

The new park-and-ride lot for the Xpress Bus system will begin operation on Monday. Friday was the last day for Xpress Bus riders to park at Ashley Park. The Ashley Park park-and-ride service will close, and the new park-andride lot, located at Hollz Parkway across from the Summit, will become the sole location to catch an Xpress Bus. Route times will not change. Plans are to install a traffic light at the intersection of Hollz Parkway and Highway 34 East. However, installation of the traffic light has been delayed because of a design issue, said William Mecke, spokesman for the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority, which oversees the Xpress Bus system. As soon as that issue is resolved, the signal will be installed. However, because the parkand-ride lot itself is ready, the decision was made to go ahead and open it without the signal, Mecke said. The lot can be accessed from Hollz Parkway at Highway 34,
or from Walt Sanders Memorial Drive at the traffic light. Take the roadway between Quik Trip and the J&R Plaza, which leads to Hollz Parkway and the parkand-ride lot. The Xpress Bus system shuttles riders between Newnan and several stops in downtown Atlanta. Reaction to the new lot was mixed among Xpress riders and their friends and family members who pick them up at the park-and-ride lot. Two “reverse commuters” interviewed Friday were vehemently opposed to the change. “It’s probably the last day I’ll ride,” said Hunter Altland. Altland lives in Atlanta but works in the Shenandoah Industrial Park. The journey from Ashley Park to Amlajack Boulevard isn’t too bad; sometimes he catches a ride. “I can handle it here,” he said. But trying to get from the new park-and-ride to his job will require more walking, he said. He’s been riding the bus for a little over a year and has really enjoyed it — though he wasn’t too happy about the recent fare increase. By Monday,

Wright named to foundation board By JEFF BISHOP jbishop@newnan.com
Wright
The West Georgia Technical College Foundation has appointed Coweta County Development Authority President Greg Wright to the Board of Trustees. The foundation recently announced the addition of four new members to its 23-member Board of Trustees, including Wright, Page
Estes, Bob Harris and Jeff Dewberry. “With West Georgia Technical College moving toward the groundbreaking for its new Coweta campus, I am honored to be asked to serve on the foundation board,” said Wright. “The quality of the work force is very important to companies looking to locate or expand in the county, and the technical college is a
critical part of the economic development process,” he said. “Being involved with the foundation board will give me an important seat at the table as the technical college moves forward and expands the educational opportunities available to area residents and companies.” In his role as president of the
