festive tableware and decorations like 4th of July party pics — a simple way to add spark to any celebration. Play up the Independence Day theme throughout — from beverage to dessert. “Serve an easy-to-eat meal dressed up with holiday colors,” says Siler. “All Star Sliders on Cornbread Buns are a delicious spin on the classic burger. Patriot’s Peanut Butter Popcorn — a yummy mix of popcorn, peanut butter and colored candies — is an ideal salty-sweet treat. Packed in star-studded gift bags, this easy-to-make goodie is a party favorite and a perfect take-home for guests.” Cool down when the temperature rises with refreshing, fruity Red and Blue Raspberry Lemonade. Have a blast decking out the glasses with stripes, stars and swirls using edible blue Sparkle Gel. What’s more fun than the fireworks finale? Dessert! Guests will ooh and aah over Banana Split Surprise Cake — a decadent dessert with a surprise strawberry ice cream center. It’s a new take on cake and ice cream, great for serving a crowd.

Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke Pose Significant Threats Understanding the causes and symptoms of each can help revelers survive the summer heat Summer is a season best spent outdoors, and many people anxiously await their opportunity to soak up some sun in the warm, summer air. But the summer heat can be relentless, posing a potentially significant threat to those who aren’t careful. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two of the biggest concerns for those spending time under the summer sun. Differentiating between the two and understanding the causes and symptoms of each can help revelers survive the summer heat.

Veterinarians across the country are expecting an abundance of fleas and ticks this year.

or pet owners, warm weather brings the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with their furry loved ones. But it also brings the risk of flea and tick infestation. Veterinarians across the country are expecting an abundance of fleas and ticks this year, due in part to warmer winter temperatures in some areas of the nation. “Fleas and ticks are more than simple nuisances for your pets,” said Laura

Petree, DVM, Manager of Technical Services. “They can cause your pet discomfort, and in the case of ticks, put your pets and your family at risk for a variety of diseases.” Dr. Petree says that flea eggs can account for 50 percent of a domestic flea infestation. One adult female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day. If your pet has 10 fleas, your problem suddenly multiplies to 15,000 fleas in a month. “In order to effectively protect your dog or cat from fleas and ticks, you need to address any initial

infestation problem, then keep the problem from coming back,” she said.

Preventing Problems

Those who work or exercise in humid or hot conditions might have experienced some level of heat exhaustion. When a person is suffering from heat exhaustion, their body is losing its fluids through sweat, and that loss causes dehydration. The body will also overheat, with its temperature rising as high as 104° F.

What is heat stroke?

give fleas and ticks a welcoming environment. Mow regularly, keep shrubs

Heat stroke can be life-threatening. When a person is experiencing heat stroke, his or her body’s cooling system stops working, and the body’s temperature can rise to 105 F or higher. The cooling system is controlled by the brain, so heat stroke can even damage the brain and/or additional internal organs.

OF GEORGIA

What causes heat stroke? Unlike heat exhaustion, which is largely caused by external conditions, heat stroke can result from an existing medical condition or medications. People with certain conditions or on medications that hinder the body’s ability to sweat may be predisposed to heat stroke because their cooling mechanisms are already impaired or compromised. But heat stroke can also be caused by anyone exerting themselves in a hot environment, even if those people do

Many people who suffer from heat exhaustion are not used to exercising or working in hot or humid environments, an unfamiliarity that makes them susceptible to heat exhaustion. Gardeners, for example, might be able to work in the garden in late spring and feel no ill effects. However, once summer arrives with its humidity and higher temperatures, those same gardeners are not accustomed to such conditions and might develop heat exhaustion as a result. Especially humid days make it difficult for the body to properly evaporate sweat, and the body will lose fluids and electrolytes. As this is happening, people who do not adequately replace those lost fluids are more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion.

Coweta’s Greatest Generation

Continued from Page 1 trimmed, and rake up leaves. Keep the garbage covered so it won’t attract rodents — that means fleas and ticks won’t have any help getting close to your house.

You can spray your yard to kill adult fleas and ticks. Outdoor sprays can be used on lawns, flowers, trees and shrubs. They kill and repel fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, ants, crickets and other insects. Spray wherever your pet frequents the most. Allow it to dry before letting pets or people onto the treated area. Preventive maintenance should be a regular part of your pet care routine. Whenever you groom your dog or cat, check for fleas and ticks. Signs of fleas include redness and scratching, as well as what’s known as flea dirt — black flea droppings left on your pet’s coat. Ticks are most commonly found around the neck, in the ears, in the folds between the legs and body, and in between the toes. Cats may also have them around the neck and face. Topical treatments contain an insect growth regulator (IGR) that kills flea eggs and prevents re-infestation. They kill and repel fleas, ticks and mosquitoes for up to 30 days. Shampoos and mists can also be used to complement your pet’s regular flea and tick control maintenance. n Shampoos

Jesus, come into my life. Forgive me of all my sins. I ask you to cleanse my heart, and make me a new person in you right now. I believe that you are the Son of God and that you died on the cross for me. Jesus, I want to thank you for loving me enough to die for me. I accept all that your shed blood bought for me on the cross, and I receive you as my Saviour and Lord. In your name I pray. Summer’s here — the sun is shining and it’s time to relax. Drifting off to sleep when the heat and humidity kick in can actually be more difficult than it sounds, especially for people who don’t have air conditioning. Maintaining a cool bedroom temperature is just one of many ways the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) recommends people can get a better night’s sleep. Here are a few other strategies from the NSF report “Recommendations for a Healthy Sleep”:

Make your day work for you: Morning exposure to sunlight, daily exercise and a consistent routine of going to bed and waking up at the same time will help program your body

Our services include:

Create a sleep sanctuary: Dim the lights in the evening to tell your body bedtime is approaching and sleep in a dark room. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary from all the stresses of the day. Keep it cool, quiet and free from distractions. While room lights, TV, computers and other electronics illuminate our worlds well beyond nightfall and give us the ability to stay active after dark, scientists are now contemplating how this prolonged exposure to light might interfere with our bodies’ naturally-programmed sleep patterns. In other words, computers, cell phones and work assignments should be out of sight.

Have a backup plan: Lessen the pressures of trying to fall asleep by selecting a calming

If heat exhaustion is suspected, get out of the heat immediately, ideally into an air-conditioned room but under a tree in the shade if that’s the only option. Call a doctor if you cannot keep fluids down or if you seem incoherent. Those who can keep fluids down should drink plenty of noncaffeinated and nonalcoholic beverages, and remove any tight or unnecessary clothing. In addition, take a cool shower or bath, but ideally only do so if someone is around to monitor you.

What should I do if I suspect I am suffering from heat stroke? Heat stroke is potentially lifethreatening, so immediately dial 911 if you feel you have heat stroke. If you suspect someone else has heat stroke, administer some first aid while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Move the person to an air-conditioned
