ut away your wallet and pull out your fishing pole. Visitors to Georgia’s State Parks & Historic Sites will not pay for parking or admission on Saturday, September 29 as part of National Public Lands Day. Sponsored by the Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites, the celebration brings attention to ways that parks enrich communities, plus the importance of local volunteerism. Parking is normally $5 at state parks, and admission ranges from $2.50 to $10 at state historic sites. “We’re calling this celebration ‘Your State Parks Day’ to remind Georgians that state parks and historic sites belong to them,” said Andy Fleming, executive director of the Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites. “Parks add so much to our lives. We’re hoping more people will visit the state park closest to their homes, and

At Fort Yargo, mountain bikers will work on trails, at Hard Labor Creek, rangers will lead a wildlife kayaking expedition, and at Unicoi, visitors can help clean up Smith Creek. Most members support the organization simply by purchasing annual memberships. “It’s no secret that state park systems across the country are

How to close your pool for the season METRO GRAPHICS
After a summer’s worth of memories and fun in the sun, pool owners know it’s time to close their pool for the coming fall and winter seasons. As the leaves begin to change color and the air starts to grow a little more crisp, homeowners turn their attention to winterizing their pools. The goal is to begin the work early on so that you’re not facing the hassle of leaves all over the ground or in the pool. Many times, closing the pool requires a team effort, so enlist the help of a spouse, friend or family member before beginning the process. The first thing that is essential to winterizing the pool is having all of your equipment ready. Depending on the type of pool you have, this equipment can vary. But have all tools, winterizing chemicals and water plugs at the ready. Although inground pools and above-ground ones have similar winterizing steps, there are a few differences between the two and it is important to be aware of the differences. Thoroughly vacuum the bottom of the pool and clean the walls. You want to remove as much organic material, such as algae and dead insects, as possible prior to covering the pool so that there is a higher propensity the water will be crystal clear next spring or summer when you reopen the pool. Once the pool has been vacuumed and cleaned,
backwash the filter to remove any excess residue. Remove plugs or open drain ports on the filter and let all of the water flow out of the filter. Give the filter components, including skimmer baskets, a good rinse with water and allow them to dry. Next, disconnect the pool’s pump and filter. Everything should be totally drained of any water. With an above-ground pool, remove intake and output hoses and drain. For inground pools, use an air compressor or a shop vacuum to blow out any residual water from the return pipes, and then promptly plug up the ports. Some people prefer to plug-up the skimmer return as well and leave the water level of the pool as is. However, it is also possible to drain the pool water level below the skimmer level. Put duct tape or use some other blockage method on all exposed pipes or openings to the pools to prevent anything from getting inside — this includes any insects and rodents looking for places to set up winter camp. While some people keep their filters disconnected and outdoors for the winter, the pump should be moved into a garage or shed. Do so with the filter if you have room in order to better safeguard the equipment.

on’t think you have time to make a delicious meal for your busy family? Think again; with these handy tips and easy recipes — which call for just four ingredients — you can get a satisfying supper on the table in no time. Use these tips to make meal prep easier during busy nights: Stock Up — Always keep some basic ingredients on hand to make last-minute cooking a lot easier. n Frozen vegetables — Can be served as a side or added to soups and rice dishes. n Broth — Beef, chicken and vegetable broths can be used to make soups and sauces, and to add flavor when cooking vegetables and rice. n Add-ins — Nuts, sesame seeds, parsley, dried fruit and cheese can be added to main
dishes, sides and salads to make them even more flavorful and nutritious. Time Savers — Take advantage of grocery items that do some of the work for you. n Frozen rice — For a tasty side or a starter for a full meal, try flavorful rice that heats in the microwave in a self-ventilating steamable bag. It only takes four minutes to have one of six varieties on your dinner table. n Pre-cut vegetables — Save some prep time by using pre-cut vegetables. Give them a quick wash and they’re ready to use. n Pre-seasoned ingredients — Look for canned, diced tomatoes with garlic and onions, cheese made with jalapeño, or marinated chicken or pork cuts. These are all ways to add flavor without adding time.

HELD AGAINST YOUR WISHES? Not only is it a criminal offense to hold someone against his or her will, confining a person without legal authority or consent can be the basis of a civil suit for damages. In the event that consent is gained either through threat or coercion, it is not considered valid; therefore, people who are unlawfully or unjustifiably detained against their will can bring suit against the responsible party in an effort to receive monetary compensation for lost time, mental anguish, or physical suffering. False imprisonment not only occurs when a person wrongfully prevents someone else from leaving a room, vehicle, or building, it applies to family members if the person desiring to leave is an adult. HINT: Spouses have no legal right to confine one another.

Coweta’s Greatest Generation available in a
Limited Edition Hardcover Book The Newnan Times-Herald spent over a year highlighting the stories of surviving local World World II veterans in a project called “Our Greatest Generation.” This award-winning series presented the stories of over 120 local men and women and was a favorite of readers young and old.
F.D. Roosevelt State Park cabin located in Warm Springs, GA.
Free Day Continued from Page 1 struggling with limited funds and resources,” said Fleming. “We’re helping fill that gap. And regular park visitors can help too, by visiting more often, by staying overnight more often and by volunteering when they can.” Georgia is known for its exceptional state park system that provides a variety of outdoor recreation while also protecting natural and cultural resources. Visitors can enjoy camping, hiking, fishing, boating, geocaching, picnicking, golf and numerous other activities. Historically significant places such as Etowah Indian Mounds and Roosevelt’s Little White House tell the story of Georgia’s rich past. Cabins, lodges, campgrounds and yurts let visitors spend short getaways and longer vacations within the parks, putting hiking trails and fishing lakes right outside their door. Reservations can be made online at GeorgiaStateParks.org/reservations and by calling 1-800-864-7275. Free parking and admission during “Your State Parks Day” is available to all Georgia residents and visitors. Participating locations can be found on GeorgiaStateParks.org, including Cloudland Canyon, Skidaway Island, Victoria Bryant, Dahlonega Gold Museum, Kolomoki Mounds and dozens of other destinations. “We are thankful for the support that our Friends members give us,” said State Parks Director Becky Kelley. “We wouldn’t be able to offer this free day without their help. Hopefully, more people will take this opportunity to explore parks that are right in their own communities.”
Since the series ended, we have had countless requests to reproduce this collection of stories so they may be preserved for future generations and enjoyed time and again in their entirety. We are pleased to announce the entire series has been published in a limited edition hardcover book with 288 pages that tell the stories and feature photographs of these proud men and women.

Speedy Suppers Continued from Page 1 Plan Ahead — If you have more time on the weekend, you can do some prep work to cut down on your weeknight cooking time. n Prep ingredients — Chop vegetables and shred cheese, and keep them in storage containers or resealable bags in the fridge. You can also brown ground beef and cut any meats into recipe-ready pieces. n Herb cubes — Put a tablespoon of chopped herbs in each well of an ice cube tray. Fill with either water or olive oil, then freeze. Once frozen, pop them out and store in a freezer bag — you’ll have fresh herb flavor in a flash. n Cook once, eat twice — Double up on a recipe, then freeze one half for later. Or, plan a second meal around leftovers. For example, use Monday night’s taco meat for Tuesday night’s taco salad.

The Lottery Scam:
Think You’ve Won the Lottery? Think Again ARA CONTENT
You’ve probably dreamed about what you’d do if you won the lottery — quit your job, build your dream home or even donate a large sum of money to your favorite charity. The allure of a huge amount of money falling into your lap cannot be denied. Scammers know these dreams and feelings well, and prey on them, making lottery and sweepstakes scams one of the most prevalent types of scams out there, according to the Better Business Bureau. While your chances of winning the actual lottery may already be slim, you not only won’t win with scammers — you’ll likely lose money. These types of scams work in a number of ways, and all of them end with an unsuspecting victim losing. Here are three common ways scammers use the promise of big winnings to their advantage: ■ A scammer claiming to be associated with a government agency, a well-known celebrity or someone associated with a sweepstakes or lottery tells a victim he or she has won a large sum of money. The victim is told to send money to cover processing fees or taxes before receiving the prize. The victim then pays these “fees,” and never hears from the scammer again. ■ A scammer sends a victim a check or money order and claims it’s a prize. The victim is asked to deposit this money and send a smaller portion of money back to cover fees or taxes. The problem occurs when the victim deposits the check or money order and sends the scammer the money as directed before the check clears which can take weeks. Banks don’t always immediately identify the “winning” check as fake until it’s too late and the money has already be sent to the scammer. The victim is responsible to the bank for any used funds from the check. ■ A scammer emails or sends a victim information about a foreign lottery, or another alternative lottery or sweepstakes that offers better odds of winning than a traditional lottery. The victim sends money to the scammer for a chance at winning, but the lottery or sweepstakes doesn’t actually exist. The common thread in all of these scams is they require victims to send money in advance to claim a prize, which is never the case with a legitimate lottery or sweepstakes. “The
Close Pool Continued from Page 1 Homeowners should also test the pool water chemistry and adjust the pH, calcium hardness and total alkalinity according to recommended levels. Then prepare to add the desired mix of chemicals to the pool to sanitize it for the season. Most people use a combination of algaecide and chlorine as their winterizing chemicals. However, if the chlorine level is high enough, algaecide may not be necessary. Raise the chlorine to shock level — much higher than the recommended level for when the pool is running. Thoroughly mix granulated chemicals to prevent them from settling on the liner and causing stains. The cover should be placed on the pool and properly secured. This is where an extra body comes in handy so that the cover can be maneuvered easily. In above ground pools, an inflated pillow is often used to alleviate ice expansion and prevent the walls of the pool from splitting.
