Notes: n Bake any remaining stuffing in a covered casserole with the turkey for 30 minutes or until the stuffing is hot. n Stuffing in the turkey should reach 165°F.

4 Easy Ways to Support the Troops During the Holidays StatePoint

Supporting the troops is an important thing to do — but sometimes it’s hard to figure out how. Here are four easy ways to thank those who keep us safe every single day — even if you don’t personally know someone serving. And with the holidays coming up, it’s the perfect time of year to do it, as many of service men and women are away from family.

Replace pulls or knobs on cabinet doors for an easy kitchen update.

Create a Fresh Look for Your Home METRO GRAPHICS

Before the holidays bring family celebrations and visiting friends to your home, give your home a new look and improve its comfort level. Check out the suggestions below and make your project list. "Put safety first," cautions Scott Phillips, host of The American Woodshop. "Before you begin your first project, make sure you have eye, ear and breathing protection available and then follow the manufacturer's directions for all the tools and products you use. Have a first-aid kit and a phone handy, and enlist help for the heavy-duty work." Entrance, Windows & Floors Give your entrance an easy update with a new door or add color and new hardware to your existing one. Install new windows that are attractive, reduce heating and cooling costs, and are easy to maintain. And consider installing a hardwood floor in at least one of your rooms — possibly the entryway and/or the living/family room. Kitchen & Dining Areas Apply stain or color to your kitchen cabinets and replace hinges and pulls or knobs to brighten your "home cafe." If your cabinets have seen better days, install new ones — either store-bought

or ones you build. For a wood table and chairs, consider using a stain or topcoat to enhance the wood's appearance or to match the color of your cabinets. Shelving & Lighting Adding shelving anywhere you have unused space (bedroom/bathroom closets) will help control clutter and provide display space for your favorite photos and collectibles in the living room, family room, and kitchen. Enhance cabinets and furniture with new decorative LED lighting. Living/Family Room Arranging furniture into "areas" will allow for varied activities simultaneously, such as conversation and watching events on television or playing games. Use plants, a bookcase or a divider to separate areas. Paint walls, hang pictures or stain wood furniture to add color. Warming Indoor Accents Just because Thanksgiving is a major holiday in fall, it doesn’t mean you should only deck your home with pumpkins and turkeys. There are plenty of ways to incorporate the look and feel of the season with textures, finishes

Care Package Ideas Pictures are one of the best things you can send to a troop. When you are away from a cherished one for a long time, it’s hard to remember what they look like. Send them a lot of pictures – but different pictures. You or your kids or friends making funny faces, serious, or making idiots of themselves. Also receiving an award or opening up a birthday present. Make up as many reasons as possible to take pictures. Try being in your soldier’s shoes. You would want to see everything that goes on during their day. That’s what they would like too. Not just prettied up. Even days when you are casual or not at your best. Take pictures of everyone in bed, at the dinner table, watching tv, playing volleyball, cooking, or dancing around the house. Every troop misses the abundance and variety of junk food from the ‘states,’ so be sure to pack some beef jerky, hard candies, and chips. Flavored powder drinks are also a big hit. Chocolates melt, so you might think twice about sending gooey candies. Travel games are good for entertaining. But when they get really bored, a cool media player already loaded up with all their favorite songs and movies will really help the time pass by. Volunteer Your Time Former service members stateside should also be recognized. Show your appreciation for those who have helped protect our country by volunteering at a Veterans Affairs hospital or nursing home this season, even if only for a few hours. You are sure to meet some fascinating men and women and you’ll be bringing holiday cheer to those who may not have many visitors. Give Blood Giving blood through an organization like the American Red Cross can actually help troops hundreds and thou-

sands of miles away. Military units may depend on rush shipments of blood during times of need, and maintaining an ample supply of all blood types is crucial. Be Vocal Encouraging others to remember our deployed troops is one of the most wide-reaching ways to support the active military during the holidays. By reminding neighbors that our men and women overseas may need a boost of holiday cheer, you could touch

hundreds of service members’ lives this season. Talk to people, post on Facebook, send out Tweets or include a reminder in your holiday cards. Although the holidays can be a difficult time for deployed service members and their families, there are countless ways you can show your gratitude and appreciation this season. Whether it’s a personalized gift, visit to a veteran, or blood donation, you can give back to those who give so much to our country.

Who you gonna call to shop one of America’s largest selections of new and used vehicles online?

4 MyConnection | Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Fresh Look Continued from Page 1 and accent pieces. As the weather gets cooler, add colorful blankets and throws in different weaves to add interest to your existing furniture. Engage all your senses by incorporating scented candles throughout your home — fall staples like apple, caramel and cinnamon will make every room more warm and inviting. Don’t feel like you need to buy all new decor for the season. Spray paint is a simple and inexpensive way to update existing items you may already have around the house, like candlesticks, a serving tray or picture frames in the new fashionable colors. Once you have found the items that you want to makeover, lightly sand them to ensure a smooth surface. Next wipe down the surface to remove any dust or debris. Apply even coats of primer and then add the color of your choice. As a focal point in living rooms, the mantel is an ideal location to display your new beautiful fall creations. Adding lighted elements, like lanterns or candles, can also bring additional warmth to the room. Don’t have a mantel? Don’t worry — instead, your dining table can be made over to display your seasonal decor pieces. To protect the top from any scratches or stains, place a runner underneath your new tablescape. Burlap is a perfect choice for this time of year, helping you bring the look and feel of fall right into your dining room.

Welcome your guests Once your indoors are looking grand, focus on outdoor elements, such as the front porch, to create a welcoming feel for holiday guests. Easily transform boring, clay pots with a few coats of spray paint; try one of the season’s richest colors, like Hunter Green, for a woodsy feel. Once dry, add mums and place them on your porch. Continue your makeover with a new door mat and wreath on your front door. Not only will you increase your home’s curb appeal, you’ll also show guests that they’re welcome in your home.

Charities and nonprofit organizations rely on donations to fund their daily operations and help achieve the goals set forth in their mission statements. While charities rely on donors, criminals prey on them, especially online. Generous men and women are prime targets for online scammers, who can easily present themselves as a worthy charity with a goal of scamming donors out of their money, funds that could be going to worthwhile charities instead. As a result, men and women need to be especially suspicious of online scams while employing the following tips to protect themselves. Don’t fall for victim stories. Anyone who has had an e-mail account has no doubt received an e-mail from a stranger claiming to be a victim but only needs some generous donors to get back on his or her feet. The “victim” will solicit financial information, which he or she claims will go toward financing the recovery process. These victims are almost certainly criminals hoping to access your financial records or simply squeeze a donation out of you and thousands of other generous men and women. When you receive such an unsolicited e-mail, delete the message before opening. Never open unsolicited e-mail attachments. Another way criminals use e-mail to get at unsuspecting victims is by sending unsolicited e-mails that include attachments. Criminals may say these attachments are photos of the tragedy left in a natural disaster’s wake, but they are more likely viruses aimed at gaining access to your computer and any sensitive information therein. Never open these emails, and if you do by mistake,

never open the attachments. Don’t click on links included in an e-mail or online solicitation. Criminals are clever, and many are fully capable of creating a fraudulent Web site that’s a mirror image of a reputable charity’s Web site. Links to these fraudulent sites might be included in the body of an e-mail or on social media sites. Never click on these links. If a particular cause or charity strikes a chord with you, find out the charity’s URL address and then type that address into your browser manually.

with an “https://” instead of just “http://”. The “s” in the URL ensures that the site is secure and that others cannot access any financial information, such as sensitive credit card information, you must share when making a donation.

Only make online donations with credit cards, not debit cards. When making an online donation, do not use a debit card. Debit cards do not have the same level of fraud protection as credit cards, which will reimburse any fraudulent charges made in your name. Blessing event held at facility

By W. WINSTON SKINNER winston@newnan.com U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland toured CowetaFayette EMC’s north Coweta headquarters on Friday afternoon. His tour followed a meeting with CowetaFayette staff and directors about federal energy policy concerns. He expressed support for a level of regulation that would not stymie utilities in their work to provide electric power to the region. “This is a great facility,” Related Westmoreland remarked story, page during the tour. 5A Coweta-Fayette spokeswom a n A my L ott sa id Westmoreland was invited to visit the EMC headquarters near Palmetto “to discuss the need for a more comprehensive approach to energy regulation.” Anthony “Tony” Sinclair, Coweta-Fayette’s CEO, said the meeting could not have come at a better time. “Regulatory overreach by the Environmental Protection Agency has a detrimental effect on the ability of Georgia’s EMCs to continue providing affordable and reliable electricity to our members,” he said. “These regulations could make it nearly impossible to build new coal-fueled plants, more costly to modify and operate existing plants and may lead to the shut-down of existing plants and a resulting loss of jobs,” Sinclair stated. Coweta-Fayette is a member/ow ner of Oglethorpe Power Corporation. As a member OPC, Coweta-Fayette receives a portion of its power from coal plants Scherer and Wansley.

Healthy Suggestions for Thanksgiving Dinner Many people count their blessings on Thanksgiving. Few, however, count their calories. With so many options available on the buffet table, it is easy to see how overeating is commonplace. Rather than wearing elastic-waisted pants and succumbing to too many fattening foods, individuals can make smart food substitutions that won’t compromise taste but will cut calorie intake. Fill up on lean protein. Turkey is the cornerstone of the Thanksgiving meal and is a lower-fat, lean source of filling protein. Rather than indulge in too many starchy side dishes, have turkey be the bulk of your Thanksgiving dinner. When preparing turkey, use fresh herbs and low-fat vegetable stock to keep the meat moist and flavorful. Serve steamed veggies. Serve produce lightly steamed so it retains its nutritional value and flavor.

Skip double-crust pies. Twocrust pies with a bottom crust and a top layer have more calories than ones with just a crust on the bottom. Opt for low-calorie pumpkin pie or add a little gelatin to pie fruit filling and skip the top crust on traditional two-crust pies. Dessert also can be pared down to fresh fruit tarts or lowfat gelatin trifles. Cut down on courses. Having an excess of food is not only unhealthy but wasteful. Trim courses from the Thanksgiving meal to save time, money and calories. Does anyone really show up for the cheese and crackers appetizers? Focus on the main course and chances are no one will miss the extra food. Plus, their waistlines won’t miss it either. Take frequent breaks. It can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes for the body to register that it is full. Failure to give the stomach time to send messages to the brain that you are full could mean you eat more than is necessary.

request for ProPosal (rfP) The West Central Georgia Workforce Development Corporation is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) to provide youth services in the following West Central Georgia Counties: Butts, Carroll, Coweta, Heard, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, and Upson. These youth services in West Central Georgia are identified collectively and together as “Career Connections for Youth” through the West Central Georgia Workforce Development Program. The West Central Georgia Workforce Development Corporation has been selected as the administrative entity for the Workforce Investment Act and funds pursuant to that act for West Central Georgia. It is estimated that approximately $400,000- $525,000 in WIA funds will be available to serve approximately 250-300 youth across the region between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014. Selected contracts may be negotiated on a cost reimbursement basis for governmental and private non-profit organizations and may be performance based for private for profit organizations. Selected contracts would provide year round services based on the WIA required program elements and to accomplish outcomes based on WIA performance standards for youth.
