Fire Safety for your family

Family Features

N

o one likes to think about bad things happening to their home or family. But things like home fires do happen — more often than you might think. Home fires kill an average of seven people every day, and they cause billions of dollars in property damage. Here are some easy steps you and your family can take to protect your home and each other, and to under stand the basics of fire safety.

Your Best Defense According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), working smoke alarms are your best chance

Almost one-quarter (23 percent) of the smoke alarm failures were due to dead batteries. Remember to change batteries yearly. Working smoke alarms are your best chance for escaping a home fire.

Signs you may be heading for substantial debt Many men and women with heavy debt are vague when asked to describe how they got there, often ex pressing a notion that the debt seem ingly piled up overnight. Though it's possible to incur a substantial amount of debt in a short period of time, many debtors witness their financial pitfalls gradually increase, with inter est rates adding up over time. Men and women who know their debts didn't occur overnight may have missed the warning signs that they were heading for financial trouble. The following are a few signs that your problem with debt might be on the way to spiraling out of control.

Tips for accommodating overnight guests Entertaining isn’t always just about host ing an evening of cocktails and appetiz ers or presenting your home as the meet ing place for the next holiday celebration. Entertaining also extends to welcoming guests for a night or more when certain conditions warrant an overnight stay. There are many different reasons a guest might need to stay over for a night or two. Perhaps a relative from afar is visiting, and you’ve spared him or her the expense of paying for a hotel. Some friends may need a layover spot between traveling. Some hosts prefer to err on the side of safety when a party gets a bit too rowdy by offering a place to crash for the night. Whatever the reason for hosting an overnight guest, there are different steps you can take to make sure the person feels comfortable staying in your home.

Be courteous to his or her needs, even if it infringes on your own comfort for the time being. Have a private area for sleeping. Some guests are content to crash on the couch for a night, but the courteous host will offer a better place in which to retire. Not every home is equipped with a spare bedroom, but there are ways to make existing spaces more comfortable and private. Offer your own room for the time being, seeing as you will have full run of the rest of the house and know the comings and goings of daily routines. Otherwise, ask one of the children to bunk with another and prepare his or her bedroom for your guest. If you have an out-of-the-way den or office, you may be able to set up a futon or fold-out sofa there for your guest.

Keep special linens on hand. You probably want to make a good impres sion, and that involves making the bed with crisp, clean sheets and blankets. Keep a set of guest linens in a bag with a sheet of fabric softener or a little pot pourri sack to ensure the sheets always smell fresh. Now is not the time to drag out those old floral sheets that have seen their share of wear and tear. Have extra grooming essentials at the ready. Guests look to the special ac commodations at hotels to feel comfort able. These are often sample-sized bottles of shampoo and mouthwash, or even an extra toothbrush. It’s easy to overlook essentials when you’re packing in haste. Therefore, be the perfect host or hostess

Minimum payments: Every credit card statement includes the outstand ing balance as well as the minimum payment due. In addition, statements now include a forecast of when the debt will be paid in full if consumers make only the minimum payment, and those with substantial debt may notice that they won't be paying off their debts any time soon if they only make the minimum payment. Men and women who can only afford to make the minimum payment on an outstanding balance should recognize that as a warning sign that they are carrying too much debt and should

begin an analysis of their finances immediately before that debt gets out of control. Frequent use of credit: Using credit wisely is a great way to build your financial reputation. But using credit poorly can do significant harm to your reputation, affecting your ability to rent an apartment, finance a vehicle or secure a home loan, among other things. If you find yourself using credit to make purchases you should be mak ing with cash (or a debit card), such as fast food, your morning coffee or monthly utilities, then you're likely setting yourself up for significant debt in the future. Such purchases have a way of adding up. Before you know it your balance could be higher than you had anticipated and you might have already used your cash supply for other purchases you as sumed were affordable. Credit cards should not be used to pay for life's necessities or every day expenditures, as doing so only increases your cost of living when you factor in the inter est you will have to pay when using credit to pay for these necessities.

Holiday Connection

Gifts for your holiday host or hostess Entertaining is part of the holiday season when hosts and hostesses open their homes to many friends and family to celebrate a time of giving and togetherness. Gifts for the host and/or hostess can show appreciation to the men and women who go above and beyond. A hostess gift can be as simple or as extravagant as your budget allows. Many people tend to gravitate toward food-related gifts because of their simplicity and the idea that they can be served at the gathering of friends and family. But conventional etiquette suggests that hosts and hostesses are not obligated to serve the beverages or foods guests bring and should not feel ashamed to reserve them for their own private use. So guests may

want to think outside the box when gifting holiday hosts this season. Here are some ideas to consider. Flavored dipping oils: Herbinfused oils lend a different taste to prepared foods and also can be used as a bread garnish in lieu of butter. Pair a flavored oil with a loaf of gourmet bread and include a decorative, shallow bowl that can be used for the oil. After-dinner treat: Put together a basket of foods that can be served after dinner. Specialty

stores often sell gift "towers" this time of year that package together delicious treats.

and gone. A gift certificate for a facial or massage will provide at least an hour of pampering.

Garden gift basket: Although the cold weather is here, a garden gift basket can still make a welcome gift. Include flower seeds, fertilizer sticks, a garden trowel, a pair of gardening gloves and any other essentials you can think of.

Homemade treats: Much in the way a hand-written thank-you note can convey how much you appreciate a gift, a handmade gift can tell a host that you were thankful to be invited to an event. If you prepare a signature dish, whip it up and bring it along. It's also easy to create some simple garnishes and package them in a decorative tin or jar. Think homemade salsa or a homemade chocolate ganache sauce.

Spa gift certificate: Entertaining is hard work and a hostess may enjoy some time to recuperate once the holidays have come

No-Hassle Breakfast: Enable the host and hostess to sleep in the next day by having breakfast all ready to go. Put together a basket or tray with individual bottles of juice, packets of tea or instant coffee and some gourmet muffins or scones. Add a jar of jam and some small spreading knives so breakfast can be served with minimal hassle. There are many gifts that can treat a host or hostess to something special as a token of appreciation for opening up his or her home during the holiday season.

Guests Continued from Page 1 by offering a gift bag full of some toiletries and other necessities. Tailor the menu for your guests. You’re likely going to break bread with your houseguest, so be sure to ask which foods they like and if there any that are best avoided. Have some snacks available so guests can help themselves. Free up the spare bathroom. If yours is a home with two or more full bathrooms, set aside one solely for your guest. Sometimes it can be embarrassing or uncomfortable for guests to shower in the family bathroom. Having a bathroom set aside specifically for guests can make the stay even more enjoyable. Find out which creature comforts your guest desires. Some people like to sleep with an eye mask to block out the light. Others like to watch TV alone in the evening. Some may need a fan or a white noise machine to drift off into slumber. See if you can accommodate your guest further by catering to any special preferences they might have. Leave pockets of personal time available. Some hosts or hostesses feel that they’re being accommodating by planning a full itinerary. However, some guests would simply enjoy some quiet time alone. Be sure to pepper the stay with moments of group activities but also some chances for guest and host alike to spend some time alone.

Debt Continued from Page 1 Routinely checking balances: Though it's important to stay on top of your finances, there's a difference between checking your accounts for discrepancies and checking to determine your available balances. The former is responsible, while the latter suggests you may have a problem with impulse spending. If you don't have a general idea of what the balances on your credit cards are and you find yourself frequently checking those balances before making purchases, then consider that a warning that you don't have a handle on your debt. No savings: One of the most telltale signs that you might be carrying substantial debt, which, thanks to interest charges will likely only increase, is a lack of savings. You should be saving money every pay period. If you're not capable of saving, then your debts are likely exceeding your income, which puts you on a crash course with substantial debt. If you're not saving money but you are still piling up debts with purchases made on credit, expect to face some serious consequences down the road. Few people can say they have never experienced a problem with debt at least once in their lives. But those who often overcome issues with debt are those who recognized some telltale warning signs that a storm of debt was coming and acted quickly to keep those debts from becoming overwhelming.

biscuits featuring melted Montasio cheese in the indentations on top — a clever touch for biscuits made with readymade dough.

n Another

brilliant two-ingredient recipe consists of eggs baked in Prosciutto di San Daniele “cups.” They are crisp, creamy and irresistible.

Montasio Cheese Thumbprint Biscuits

Yield: 8 biscuits 1 package store bought ready-made biscuit dough 1 cup coarsely grated Montasio cheese Preheat oven to 400°F. Separate biscuits onto a parchment lined or lightly greased baking sheet. With your thumb, press into center of each biscuit to form a small well. Fill each well with 2 tablespoons of the grated Montasio. Bake until tops are golden, about 8 minutes. Serve immediately.

Eggs Baked in Prosciutto di San Daniele Cups

Yield: 12 portions 12 slices Prosciutto di San Daniele 12 large eggs Preheat oven to 400°F. Fold one slice of Prosciutto di San Daniele in half crosswise to make a rectangle. Fit into a muffin cup. Crack egg into lined cup. Repeat with remaining ham and eggs. Bake 10 to 12 minutes to desired doneness.

Fire Safety Continued from Page 1 for escaping a home fire. They can alert you to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whether you’re awake or asleep. n

n

11 p.m. to 7 a.m. are the peak alarm times for home fire deaths — when people tend to be asleep and the house is likely to be dark. On average, families have less than three minutes from the time the first smoke alarm sounds to escape a fire.

The NFPA says that in the U.S., almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with inoperable smoke alarms or no smoke alarms. In reported home fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate: n

n

n

Half of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries. Nuisance alarms were the leading reason for disconnected smoke alarms. Almost one-quarter (23 percent) of the smoke alarm failures were due to dead batteries. Only seven percent of the failures were due to hardwired power source problems, including disconnected smoke alarms, power outages and power shut-offs.

Fire Safety Checklist Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area. n Best location — On the ceiling in the center of the room, at least 12 inches from any wall. n Second best location — On a wall 12 inches below the ceiling. Test alarms once a month. n To reach it, stand on a chair or use a broom handle, and push the unit’s test button. If you don’t hear anything, the battery is probably dead. If the unit still doesn’t sound after you’ve changed the battery, replace it with a new smoke alarm.
