CELEBRATE MOM Family Features

M

others are incredible people. This year, make sure you properly thank her for all she has done for you by celebrating her with a day she’ll cherish forever.

Here are a few ideas to make this Mother’s Day her most memorable yet: n

n

Plant a Garden Together Before you shell out big bucks on chocolates and jewelry, consider a greener gift that mom can treasure from her window. Visit your local garden center or nursery and pick some vibrant beauties you know she’ll swoon over. Supply the gloves, mom’s favorite cocktails and snacks and make an event out of gardening with your favorite lady. Create Your Own Card No matter how old you are, nothing says it better than construction paper, glitter and a little creativity. If she’s a grandmother, involve the kids and make it a family craft project. Take a trip to your local hobby store to make sure you have all the goods for this tried-and-true ticket to

mom’s heart. n

Plan a Beautiful Brunch Create a colorful, bountiful brunch for mom. Make a checklist of all the necessary ingredients, ensuring you serve all of her favorites! For a fresh twist on brunch, incorporate the sweet summertime goodness of watermelon and other fresh fruit. Impress her with Breakfast Six Layer Trifle, or make her smile with Watermelon Pancake Sandwiches. Design a homemade menu card, and throw in an arrangement of her favorite blooms for a finishing touch.

Cowetan repaired baseball mitts for Jackie Robinson movie ‘42’ As Coweta County continues to be a hot spot for film production, more and more residents are flocking to theaters hoping to see themselves or someone they know on the silver screen. Deland Cochran and his wife, Debbie, couldn’t wait for the new movie “42” about baseball legend Jackie Robinson to open for that very reason. But the Cochrans didn’t rush to the theater to see a friendly face on screen. They were there to admire the props, specifically the vintage baseball gloves, which Deland repaired and refurbished for use in the film. “It was pretty neat,” Deland says. “We were watching the movie and I’d punch Debbie and say ‘that’s my catcher’s mitt’ or ‘that’s my first base mitt.’ It was a lot of fun.” Deland never dreamed his longtime passion would result in high-profile Hollywood exposure. At least not when he was playing baseball as a student and young man. In the 1980s Cochran was working in a sporting goods store. Occasionally, people would come in asking if he could fix a glove. According to Cochran, “We sold those re-lacing kits that have a thin piece of lacing and a useless tool. As I fixed more gloves, I began looking for better quality lacing and better tools to use.” As the years passed and Cochran’s son Patrick ➤ GLOVE OF THE GAME, Page 4

4,000 turn out for annual walk By SARAH FAY CAMPBELL sarah@newnan.com

Celebrate — those who are fighting cancer and those who have won. Remember — those who have finished the battle. Fight back — by raising money for cancer research and services for those who have cancer. Some 4,000 people turned out for Coweta’s Relay for Life. There were 111 relay teams, ranging from friends and family of those with

cancer to schools, businesses and churches. And there were spectators, too, who, while not necessarily members of teams, came to celebrate, remember and fight back. The walking track at the Coweta County Fairgrounds was lined with luminarias, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. The luminaria ceremony, held at 10 p.m., is one of the most emotional parts of the event. There is also the memory tent, where slides of those who have finished the battle are shown. And there is a prayer tent.

“It’s fellowship,” said Rachel Newcomer of the American Cancer Society about Relay. Relay is “a lot of people’s healing method from losing a loved one.” Relay for Life really kicks off with the survivor lap. Survivors — anyone who has had a diagnosis of cancer — are dressed in distinctive purple shirts with “survivor” emblazoned on the back. Accompanied by friends and loved ones, they walk around the track to ➤ RELAY FOR LIFE, Page 6
