wonderful ways to
CELEBRATE MOM Family Features
M
others are incredible people. This year, make sure you properly thank her for all she has done for you by celebrating her with a day she’ll cherish forever.
Here are a few ideas to make this Mother’s Day her most memorable yet: n
n
Plant a Garden Together Before you shell out big bucks on chocolates and jewelry, consider a greener gift that mom can treasure from her window. Visit your local garden center or nursery and pick some vibrant beauties you know she’ll swoon over. Supply the gloves, mom’s favorite cocktails and snacks and make an event out of gardening with your favorite lady. Create Your Own Card No matter how old you are, nothing says it better than construction paper, glitter and a little creativity. If she’s a grandmother, involve the kids and make it a family craft project. Take a trip to your local hobby store to make sure you have all the goods for this tried-and-true ticket to
mom’s heart. n
Plan a Beautiful Brunch Create a colorful, bountiful brunch for mom. Make a checklist of all the necessary ingredients, ensuring you serve all of her favorites! For a fresh twist on brunch, incorporate the sweet summertime goodness of watermelon and other fresh fruit. Impress her with Breakfast Six Layer Trifle, or make her smile with Watermelon Pancake Sandwiches. Design a homemade menu card, and throw in an arrangement of her favorite blooms for a finishing touch.

Cowetan repaired baseball mitts for Jackie Robinson movie ‘42’ As Coweta County continues to be a hot spot for film production, more and more residents are flocking to theaters hoping to see themselves or someone they know on the silver screen. Deland Cochran and his wife, Debbie, couldn’t wait for the new movie “42” about baseball legend Jackie Robinson to open for that very reason. But the Cochrans didn’t rush to the theater to see a friendly face on screen. They were there to admire the props, specifically the vintage baseball gloves, which Deland repaired and refurbished for use in the film. “It was pretty neat,” Deland says. “We were watching the movie and I’d punch Debbie and say ‘that’s my catcher’s mitt’ or ‘that’s my first base mitt.’ It was a lot of fun.” Deland never dreamed his longtime passion would result in high-profile Hollywood exposure. At least not when he was playing baseball as a student and young man. In the 1980s Cochran was working in a sporting goods store. Occasionally, people would come in asking if he could fix a glove. According to Cochran, “We sold those re-lacing kits that have a thin piece of lacing and a useless tool. As I fixed more gloves, I began looking for better quality lacing and better tools to use.” As the years passed and Cochran’s son Patrick ➤ GLOVE OF THE GAME, Page 4

4,000 turn out for annual walk By SARAH FAY CAMPBELL sarah@newnan.com
Celebrate — those who are fighting cancer and those who have won. Remember — those who have finished the battle. Fight back — by raising money for cancer research and services for those who have cancer. Some 4,000 people turned out for Coweta’s Relay for Life. There were 111 relay teams, ranging from friends and family of those with
cancer to schools, businesses and churches. And there were spectators, too, who, while not necessarily members of teams, came to celebrate, remember and fight back. The walking track at the Coweta County Fairgrounds was lined with luminarias, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. The luminaria ceremony, held at 10 p.m., is one of the most emotional parts of the event. There is also the memory tent, where slides of those who have finished the battle are shown. And there is a prayer tent.

“It’s fellowship,” said Rachel Newcomer of the American Cancer Society about Relay. Relay is “a lot of people’s healing method from losing a loved one.” Relay for Life really kicks off with the survivor lap. Survivors — anyone who has had a diagnosis of cancer — are dressed in distinctive purple shirts with “survivor” emblazoned on the back. Accompanied by friends and loved ones, they walk around the track to ➤ RELAY FOR LIFE, Page 6

Chill, y’all
Wise words on camping We recently had our annual spring campout with the Mighty Men of Pack 47. B i t t e r s w e e t i n a w a y. Youngest SON of Thunder will be moving up to Troop 47 this fall. So the last official campout with the younger titans. There are rather large differences between what is known as “car camping” and backpacking. That’s mainly in the stuff one totes. Backpacking, by its very name, suggests everything you bring is carried on your back. The old adage that ounces equals pounds and pounds equals pain holds true when it’s on your back. Car camping means there are no weight limits. And for some reason, it takes twice as long to pack for an overnight car camping trip than it does for a three-day backpacking one. Go figure. It’s all about weight; or not at all. The SONs’ backpacking tents weigh about two pounds. Our car camping tent, which ca n house a sma ll vi llage, requires a forklift to move. The Little Black Dress calls it the condo. I’ve stayed in beach houses smaller than the condo. There are two key advantages to car camping: a plethora of ice, as much as you want. And when nature calls, you don’t have to be one with nature, but can actually use something that flushes. It is not until you can’t have something that you realize how much you need it. Or at least appreciate it. Ice is a wonder. So is sitting down when needed. Let’s celebrate the small stuff. I think there need to be certain rules. For example, if you are camping — regardless of the type of said camping — I think you should camp. And so, after observing both kids and adults, a few f inal thoughts on car camping. You will probably figure out which are for the older generation. 1. You may not bring a generator. End of discussion. 2. You may not go get into your car at 4 a.m. and run your heater because you are cold. Be prepared, as the Scouts say. Bring warm clothes. And since everyone else is trying to sleep, a nearby running car does not help.
John Winters
3. If you have to lift off a 30-pound Dutch oven and a bag of groceries off the ice chest to get a drink, let me assure you that is not part of the “community chest.” Bring your own. 4. Bringing one of those guest-type air mattresses that require an electric pump, or a large foot pump at minimum, does not fall under the category of camping. Nor do designer sheets. 5. Bringing your microwave, BOSE surround sound stereo, hair dryer and other accoutrements is not camping. See No. 1 above. 6. You are more than welcome to sit in my camp chair. If I am around, at least ask. When I come back and say I’d like to sit in my chair, don’t say “I had it first.” 7. You are also free to try out my hammock. But it’s also where I sleep so please ask first. And no, you may not “keep-borrow” it. I want it back. 8. If you are coming to camp, please stay to camp. The only exception is an actual tornado. Said tornado must be within throwing distance. I say this because someone decided to take down their condo about 4 in the morning. This was followed by dragging all their ice coolers filled with ice, sloshing around. I thought it was a freaking tornado. 9. You are in the wilderness. That bear in camp will eventually leave. The only worry about bears is to be sure there is at least one person slower than you. 10. When you are asked to bring your own plates, water bottles, utensils, etc. — do it. I am not the kitchen. Re-read that whole “Be Prepared” thing. Someone went to the trouble of making a list of who is doing what and what to bring. Read it.
Obey it. 11. You are more than welcome to borrow my phone to call your mother. Do not return in an hour and tell me my phone is dead. 12. Do not poke me in the eye with that stick you just sharpened. 13. Do not throw things in the fire that won’t burn easily. Do not throw things in the fire that will explode. 14. I will be more than happy to help you set up your tent. The emphasis is on “help.” You don’t get to walk away to eat a hotdog. 15. Say thank you when someone cooks your dinner or yanks that tick off of you. 16. The White Monkey always goes camping with me. You are free to say hi to him. Please do not touch him — he bites. And no, you may not sleep with him because you forgot your own special blanket/stuffed animal/ whatever. I get scared at night too. He keeps me safe. 17. Tell ghost stories at your own risk. Just don’t keep me up all night with all the lights on because you are now scared. That goes for the kids too. 18. You are outdoors. Enjoy it. Do not rush. Relax and have fun. (John A. Winters is general manager for The Newnan T i m e s - H e ra l d . Fo l l o w h i s adventures at justf lipthedog. com. Email him at john@newnan.com)
Everybody loves a vacation. There is nothing like a few days off to recharge the batteries, adjust the attitude and, most of all, escape the stress. The problem is, vacations end and we drag ourselves away from fun-filled frolics to face another stretch of hard time filled with personal anxiety, job woes, insolent children, undisciplined pets and septic tank backups. If you escape t hose perils, you’re still at risk from America’s three greatest public health threats, which, according to the CDC, are obesity, handguns and Republicans. How many times have you wished you could go on vacation a nd never come back? To leave the stress and strain of daily life behind forever. Well, according to a brand new Gallup poll, you can. And you don’t even have to leave home. At least if “home” is in the right state. The Gallup organization just released its latest rankings of states whose residents are the “most stressed” a nd “least stressed” in the entire USA. To no one’s surprise, Hawaii was named the most “stress free” state. Hawaii has taken top honors in low stress every year since the poll began in 2008. It’s easy to see why. How could a nyone be stressed in Hawaii? Gorgeous weather, beautiful beaches, erupting volcanoes, hula dances, luaus, pineapple plantations, surfing, hordes of tour-

Breakthrough Treatment Helps Many Patients Reduce or Eliminate Sharp, Burning, Leg & Foot Pain, Numbness & Tingling B26360-13Sp-3.792x3-NTH.indd 1
“FDA cleared technologies combined with a little good old fashioned ingenuity has even given some who considered themselves ‘hopeless cases’… relief from the pain and numbness of neuropathy”
Peachtree City, Georgia — The debilitating symptoms of peripheral neuropathy (PN) are numerous and the misery neuropathy brings to its sufferers is well documented. But there are now doctors in the Atlanta area turning peripheral neuropathy on its head and offering many patients NEW HOPE where there was little to be had.
How Do You Know You Have (PN) Peripheral Neuropathy Or If You Can Be Helped By This Exclusive New Treatment Protocol?
Neuropathy Experts Agree…
‘Modification Treatment’ Can Be Effective for Patients Suffering With Leg & Foot Pain Related to Neuropathy
Numbness Tingling Burning Swelling/Edema Cramping Sharp stinging or stabbing pain Pain when walking Difficulty balancing because of numbness or pain Trouble sleeping because of leg & foot pain/ discomfort Restless legs
Why ‘Modification’ Type Treatments Often Times Work Well For Neuropathy Patients… The TRUTH is this… neuropathy is most commonly not ONE problem but a “collection” of problems often made worse by certain lifestyle behavior. When combined with advanced technologies, lifestyle and or ‘Modification Type Treatments’ can significantly reduce or even eliminate pain and numbness. And THIS is why the neuropathy solutions that Dr. Matthew Dunn, D.C has assembled have become so “in-demand” for so many Atlanta area chronic pain & neuropathy (PN) sufferers. Because smart Doctors and patients know… if you can ELIMINATE the swelling, pain, and discomfort ...
http://www.mayoclinic.org/medical-edge-newspaper-2009/june-12b.html http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22548619 http://diabetes.webmd.com/peripheral-neuropathy-8/your-nerve-pain-risks
AND ELIMINATE or reduce the need for pain medication… you also RADICALLY decrease the dangers of wounds and ulcers that won’t heal on the legs and feet and the increased risk of FALLS leading to severe injuries.
Especially for those who have diabetes, this isn’t a matter of improving lifestyle or just feeling better. This becomes a matter of QUALITY of LIFE.
Neuropathy Doesn’t Have To Be a Life Sentence… Neuropathy Doesn’t Have To Mean Chronic Pain, Numbness, or Loss of Function… For years many foot/leg pain and numbness sufferers had only a few options: Live with it Take medications for the rest of your life Get injections that may give only temporary relief None of the above options address the “real” issues such as poor circulation, inflammation, muscle weakness and poor balance. Using a combination of extremely advanced drugless treatment procedures along with recently developed non-invasive FDA cleared technology matched with closely monitored and tested modification type treatments and the oversight of a few of Atlanta’s most respected health care providers… Neuropathy sufferers find themselves quite literally JUMPING for JOY with the revelation that there is a treatment system that has the potential to provide pain relief, restore their health, improve function, well-being and confidence in their ability to live their life pain free. The good news is… treatments are gentle, safe, and comfortable. Best of all: no drugs, surgery or any injections.
Comprehensive Neuropathy Evaluation — Only $47.00 Comprehensive Evaluation includes: Neuropathy involvement, Pain Fibers, Foot & Leg Circulation, Nerve Sensitivity, Thermal Receptor, Pressure Receptors, Sub-Zero Sensation, Light Touch Sensitivity, Pain Fiber Receptivity and Balance Testing. An evaluation that’s valued at over $200 is YOURS for only $47, if you’re one of the first 21 qualified callers. Glove of the game Continued from Page 1 McCarthy started playing ball, Cochran repaired gloves for his son and teammates at New na n High a nd l ater at G eor g i a Southwestern, where Patrick played college ball. Cochran’s reputation spread and he began to get inquiries — and jobs — from total strangers. He eventua lly opened a website a nd business picked up even more. Debbie did a “before and after” video showing how Deland could bring a glove back to life and posted it on YouTube, and the business soared. Soon, orders were coming in from across the nation. Eventually, Cochran’s fame spread all the way to Hollywood. Last year, totally out of the blue, Cochran got a call from a Hollywood prop manager saying he was working on a new movie about Jackie Robinson called “42.” He said the film would be using 1947-era gloves. The prop manager had found some gloves but they needed to be repaired and restored for the film. He asked if Cochran could do the work.
Deland Cochran gets busy removing the laces from a baseball glove he will repair. Cochran said “sure” and, for two months, never heard another word. Then the man called back, the deal was made and Cochran found himself with a pile of old gloves needing lots of TLC and,
in some cases, replacement parts that aren’t available anymore. “The guy said he had a bunch of gloves he needed to break in,” Cochran says. “They were really in bad shape. They were dry and stiff and had dry rot and were missing pieces or parts.” Cochran didn’t throw up his hands. He got busy oiling and massaging and repairing those gloves back to the same condition they might have been in 1947, when the movie story takes place. “They couldn’t look brand new,” Cochran says, “because players don’t use a glove in a game until it’s broken in.” “But they had to look as good as they would have when they were being used,” he said. Cochran f inished his work on schedule. The gloves were perfect, the movie is a hit and now Deland Cochran can add “Hollywood baseball movie glove expert” to his resume. But he probably won’t. Cochran loves baseball, but says his work is not about becoming rich and famous. “I do this because I love it,” he says. “I still enjoy helping people keep their favorite glove on the field.”
The Newnan Times-Herald wins nine advertising awards The Newnan Times-Herald won nine awards in the 2013 Better Newspaper Advertising Contest, announced at the Georgia Press Association’s recent annual Advertising Conference. The awards were in the division C for smaller daily newspapers in Georgia. “I am very proud of the hard work and dedication of the newspaper’s advertising consultants and graphic designers who produce award-win-
ning ads for our customers,” said Times-Herald Sales and Marketing Director Colleen D. Mitchell. “I also appreciate the businesses that advertise with us,” she said. “Without them we could not have the opportunity to show our creativity in designing awardwinning advertisements, classifieds and specialty publications that produce results.” Five first place awards went to the Times-Herald
in categories including: • Classified Section or Page • Home Furnishings and Appliances — For Hollberg’s Fine Furniture. • Nontraditional — For the special advertising supplement “50 Things to Do This Summer.” • Full Color — For Christmas at Ashley Park. • Small-Page Ad — H. J. Wings & Things.
Four second place awards to the Times-Herald included: • Health Care — For Palmetto Park Assisted Living. • Miscellaneous — For Main Street Newnan. • Spot Color — For Frank’s Pasta & Grill. • Newspaper Promotion Out of Print — For Leap Into Savings
Funds set up to assist family with expenses from deadly fire By John A. Winters john@newnan.com
Friends and family of the vic-
tims in a recent fatal fire that killed five people, including four children, are setting up accounts to help defray funeral costs and support the sole survivor. Alonna McCrary, 28, two of her children and two stepchildren perished in the fire that broke out about 1 a.m. The sole survivor, an 11-year-old daughter, escaped through a window with the help of a passerby. Besides the mother, those who died were Erial McCrary, 5; Messi’ah White, 3; Nikkiah W hite, 2; a nd Ma K in zie Florence, 1. Eriel and Nikia were daughters of McCrary and the other two were stepdaughters. Eleven-year-old Nautica “Molly” McCrary was taken to the hospital after the accident, but was back at the residence later Saturday. The Alonna McCrary Memorial Fund has been set up through Wells Fargo Bank,
according to lead teller Gloria Wilson. “Donations may be dropped off at any Wells Fargo branch,” she said, adding the funds will be used to help the family expenses. Another fund, to cover the funeral expenses for 1-yearold MaKinzie, was set up at Un ited Ba n k , 61 Bu l lsboro Drive, Newnan, according to President Steve Stripling. Molly McCrary said in an interview with The Newnan Times-Herald that she woke up and was unable to breath. She went to find her mother but she was not in her room. Molly said her mother was outside and came back in, but Molly never saw her again. Molly escaped through a window. The state fire marshal determined the f ire started in a breaker box and was electrical in nature, authorities said. The house was fully involved by the time firefighters arrived. The children were staying for a sleepover, according to relatives.
