STATE CHAMPS: Northgate’s girls soccer team captured the program’s first state championship in impressive fashion last month, knocking off longtime Fayette rivals McIntosh and Whitewater in consecutive playoff games to finish on top in Class AAAAA.

he 2012-13 school year in Coweta County will be remembered for state champions, the end of some long-standing eras, and quiet simply some dramatic moments that helped shape and define the past nine months on the field, in the gym, on the track and in the pool.
There were also plenty of heartaches as teams ended their seasons with sour taste in their mouths after coming up just short of region or state titles. Northgate High School could easily be called the school of state champions thanks to wrestler Tyler Askey winning his fourth state title and finishing with a
194-0 career record. The Lady Vikings soccer team also wove their magic, winning the Class AAAAA state title with a 4-1 victory over top-ranked Whitewater putting an end to Fayette County dominances.

here are no better reasons for outdoor entertaining than good friends, good food and good weather. “I’ve made a lot of friends around the table in my life,” said Rebecca Lang, food writer, television personality and author of such cookbooks as “Around the Southern Table.” Lang’s favorite dishes are those that are easy on the cook and incorporate Southern specialties, such as Vidalia onions. Whether you’re planning for several dozen guests or inviting over a few close friends, impress them with delicious dishes in a comfortable setting.
First- through fourth-graders relax and read during the Reading Safari at Heritage.
Reading program nets great reads for Heritage students Students at the Heritage School recently traveled into the jungles of their media center on a successful safari in search of good books. Jo Dennin, media specialist at the school, created an encompassing Safari theme in the Katie Arnall Freeman Media Center. Dennin and others at Heritage put much energy into hand-making jungle-themed decor throughout the entire library for the event. A three dimensional Jeep – an extension of the mural behind it – was a big hit with students. “It was a great morning of reading activities,” Dennin said. Students entered the media center to discovered its transformation into a jungle and African
Savannah complete with lions and tigers. “Students in first grade through fourth grade brought lots of great books to read. During the morning they also participated in Literature Trivia and listened to teachers read wonderful stories,” Dennin said. A guest for the day was Curtis Richardson, a professional storyteller from the Wren’s Nest in Atlanta. He “entertained students with wonderful stories,” Dennin said. “It was a great morning for everyone.” The Wren’s Nest is the home of author Joel Chandler Harris and is a museum.
