Barbie Beach Under Siege ‘Walking Dead’ special effect artists add zombie touch to roadside attraction

hen AMC cable television network hit show “The Walking Dead” returned to Coweta to film episodes in early May, a band of “walker” Barbies made its way to terrorize the hedonistic, clothing-optional world of Turin’s Barbie Beach. But these weren’t just any zombie Barbies. No, these were the real deal — made by the same special effects pros that “walkerize” the actors in “The Walking Dead.” There were two sets of zombie Barbies given to Barbie Beach by the producers of “The Walking Dead.” One set was delivered for Halloween two years ago, when the television series was filming scenes in Sharpsburg. The second set showed up recently. And in that time the Barbie destructors have really honed their craft. “These are more vivid, they show the bones, they show the skeletons. I like the one burned at the stake,” said Linda Quick, who, along with her husband Steve, is the creator of Barbie Beach, located on their property on Georgia

New ISO score should reduce home insurance

The nation’s insurance rating company has agreed with Coweta County that the county’s fire protection is as good as the Coweta County Fire Department thinks it is. T he I n s u r a n ce S er v ic e s O f f ic e h a s announced it is granting most of Coweta County a rating of 4. That’s an improvement of 1 point over the current rating of 5. The new rating goes into effect Sept. 1. The improved rating should translate into a savings on insurance for property owners. The exact savings will depend on several factors, but the average savings should be in the 10 to 15 percent range, according to Coweta Communications Manager Tom Corker. Coweta’s rating was a 6/9 for many years. The “9” rating refers to buildings that are not within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant or other “creditable water source” or more than five miles from a fire station. When new Coweta Fire Department Chief Johnny Teeters arrived in early 2009, improving the ISO rating was a major goal. The improvements were made possible in part by the $20 million fire bond voters approved in 2008. The bond allowed for the purchase of additional fire engines as well as the construction of new stations. ISO officials visited in October 2010 to review the county’s fire department, water services and emergency communications. Teeters had hoped for a 4 rating. In April 2011, ISO announced it was setting the rating at 5. Once they got the detailed report, CCFD officials requested a meeting with ISO to discuss some issues they felt were in the report. The ISO finally issued the new rating, based on that appeal. “We felt from the beginning that we deserved a Class 4 ISO Rating and that they didn’t give us the proper credit for our capabilities,” Teeters said on Friday. “When they came back they agreed that they had missed a lot of different things.” The new rating is, for the most part, based on the resources that were in place in October 2009. “We really didn’t make any changes between the first time they came until they returned. They just missed putting a lot of little things in their report which improved our grade.” It was the “divergence” score that kept the ISO rating from being a 5 in the first place.

Divergence “considers a difference between the protection provided by the fire department and the water supply. This difference would prevent the better feature from being utilized to its fullest extent. Therefore, an adjustment is made to ref lect any difference between these two features,” according to the original ISO report. In the new report, “we cut the divergence in half,” Teeters said. “The new rating really reflects good management of the resources available to our department.” Another big improvement in fire safety is the new Fire Station 6 in Madras. The station has been relocated just north of the existing station, which will put many homes in the Arbor Springs neighborhood within five miles of a station. “Our citizens in Arbor Springs are really going to get quite a savings on their fire insurance once we open new Station 6,” Teeters said. Deputy Fire Chief Todd Moore said the new rating “adequately reflects the delivery capabilities of the Coweta County Fire Department. “If you look at the state and the nation, Coweta County is now in the top 12 percent in the state and in the top 10 percent in the nation based on its ISO rating.”

Community Connection

Nothing quick about home projects There’s something to be said for those “quickie” do-it-yourself home projects. Namely, there is nothing quick about them. They will cost more than just hiring a professional despite an hourly fee similar to corporate attorneys. That cost includes new tools, time and aggravation. I digress. I am embarrassed to say the Little Black Dress has been without hot water in her master bathroom sink for some time. It was always one of those things I was going to get around to. But since we had two sinks, she would just use mine. And then the hot water handle on my side broke as well. So something obviously had to be done. The Dress is off in Oklahoma serving as Chaplain for the Miss Oklahoma pageant, so why don’t we surprise her and get those pesky handles replaced in a jiffy. Yeah. I enlist the help of Eldest SON of Thunder. The plan is to hit the BIG DIY STORE and just replace the handles. Naturally, those handles haven’t been made in eons. And the “universal” handles that f it anything apparently only fit handles made in this universe. This becomes important later because it becomes obvious our bathroom fixtures were made by Klingons. So we decide we will just get all new bathroom sink fixtures. As an aside gentlemen, this is a very, very dangerous idea. There is something about chrome verses bronze verses rubbed bronze verses black and so forth. And I haven’t even decided on the actual style. So I do what any self-respecting father would, ask Eldest what he thinks. This way I can always blame the decision on the offspring. The set the SON picks out says it takes about 5-7 minutes to install. We will soon learn this refers to the aforementioned Klingon time, which uses Earth minutes as hours. We also learn it says nothing about “uninstall time.” Anyway. We head back and start dismantling. And hit the first of many snags. One would think you would just undo a line here, a bolt there and everything would just fall down. That would be expected. That would be a no in our case. Because for the life of us we can’t unscrew the top part of the handles or faucets. So we get under the sink to find some bolt or screw that will undo everything and are met with some medieval torture device. We see two large cooper pipes — the hot and cold — going up through the sink counter to where the handles used to be. Unfortunately, there is a

large copper bar joining the two copper pipes. And there are no bolts, no screws, no nothing. It’s like the sink counter was built around the fixtures. We go so far as to remove the entire sink counter with the remaining fixtures from hell and lay it on the ground. Still can’t figure it out. So I do what any self-respecting father would do who is not ready to teach his son words he does not need to know at his tender age. I go to bed. Yes, it’s been that long. I wake up for battle the next morning and again hit the BIG DIY STORE and pick up the biggest vise grips, channel locks and other assortments of weapons and return. And we’re pulling and yanking and banging and... nothing. So I swallow my pride, take pictures and head back to the BIG DIY STORE. The lady in the plumbing section is very nice. I show her the photos and she just stares and says something like “oh my.” It’s sort of like when the dentist goes “oops.” So she calls over the plumbing expert and I once again show the photos. And he’s like, “I’ve never seen anything like this before.” That is never a good sign. He finally says, “you got a Sawzall?” I do, thank God, or else this project would end up costing about as much as replacing my roof. So we head back once again and fortunately, the Sawzall does what it’s supposed to do. Namely, cut through a total of four pipes and one screw and the Klingon plumbing fixture is freed from the bathroom sink. So I start to go through the instructions to put together the new 5-7 minute time-limit new fixtures. Eldest glances at all the parts and says, “this is easy. I’ve got it.” Kid, don’t embarrass your dad. We start putting everything together and then hit what we refer to as a roadblock. Basically, the sink counter has three holes — one for hot water, the faucet and one for cold. Pretty common. The uncommon part is the three holes are too close together for the new hot and cold water fixture and faucet to lay flat. Not going to work. I hate Klingon plumbers. T hose Dremel ha nd-held power devices are the greatest thing since sliced bread. But man can they throw some sparks because I just know I’m going to lose a finger trying to make holes wider so the stupid

bases will fit. My digits remain intact. Success. T he SON is dow n below hooking up all the pipes and hoses and constantly complaining about how being upside down on his back on a shelf is killing him. And I’m like, “cry me a river. I want to be done before dinner.” A nd t he key t hing we’re working on is to make sure we put the handles in the right spot because the last thing we want is to have them backwards. By that I mean the handles would be in the off position when they should be in the on position. So we tighten everything up and Eldest turns the water back on. We installed the handles backwards. Fast forward, as this column is already too long. Eldest goes back under and switches the handles. And yes, I promised to fund his doctoral studies. My side took about 1/100 as long, as we sort of knew what we were doing by this time. T he Dress w i l l be home tomorrow. I pray the only words out of her mouth upon seeing her new fixtures is “It’s perfect.” Otherwise, I may be using that Sawzall on myself. (John A. Lemon Pound Cake Trifle (pictured on front page)

Pound Cake French Toast

Prep time: 10 minutes Makes: 6 servings 1 family size package (16 ounces) All Butter Pound Cake, thawed 3 eggs beaten 1/3 cup heavy cream or 1 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional) 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons butter or margarine Powdered sugar (optional) Slice pound cake into 12 slices, each about 1/2 inch thick. Whisk eggs, cream, extracts and spices in a medium bowl until well blended. Dip each pound cake slice into egg mixture making sure to coat all sides, shaking off excess batter into bowl. Melt butter in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add pound cake slices to skillet. Cook 1 to 2 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar and top with fresh fruit or maple syrup, if desired.

White Chocolate Ganache Lemon Glazed Pound Cake

Prep time: 20 minutes Makes: 12 servings 1 cup (6 ounces) white chocolate chips 1/4 cup whipping cream 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel 1 regular size package (10.75 ounces) Lemon Pound Cake, thawed Place white chocolate chips, whipping cream and butter in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir until chips are melted and mixture is smooth. If needed, heat 10 to 30 seconds more in microwave to melt chips. Stir in lemon peel. Let cool 5 minutes. Drizzle ganache over pound cake. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Cut into slices to serve. Serve with remaining ganache. Variation: Raspberry Filled White Chocolate Ganache Lemon Glazed Pound Cake — Start by cutting the pound cake in half crosswise down center. Spread with 1/4 cup seedless raspberry jam. Continue with preparing the ganache as directed.

Grilled Pound Cake with Berries

Prep time: 5 minutes Makes: 4 servings 1 regular size package (10.75 ounces) All Butter Pound Cake, thawed 1 cup Greek style lemon yogurt or ice cream Assorted fruit toppers (such as raspberries and blueberries) Slice thawed pound cake into 1/2-inch slices. Spray both sides lightly with cooking spray. Grill over medium heat until lightly browned (1 to 2 minutes per side). Top with Greek style lemon yogurt or ice cream, fresh raspberries and blueberries.

Prep time: 15 minutes Makes: 8 servings 1 regular size package (10.75 ounces) Lemon Pound Cake, thawed 3 cups sliced strawberries 3 cups blueberries 1 container (12 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed, or whipped cream Slice frozen pound cake crosswise into 3 layers. Using a star-shaped cookie cutter (or any cookie cutter shape), cut pound cake into star shapes. Cut remaining pound cake into 1-inch pieces or into smaller star shapes. Place half of the cut-up pound cake pieces on the bottom of a trifle or serving bowl. Place star shapes on side of bowl. Top with half of the fruit and whipped topping; repeat layers. Garnish with small star shapes, if desired. Serve immediately or store in refrigerator, until ready to serve.

Highway 16 East. “They are just amazing, the workmanship that went into these things,” said Steve. There were three sets of zombie Barbies — including some the Quicks did themselves. Mostly with red paint. “You can really tell the difference between ours, their f irst ones, and these last ones,” said Linda. “These people have got too much time on their hands.” The staff at “The Walking Dead” sought out the Quicks. In 2011, “one of the associate producers went to the post office” and asked how to contact the Quicks. So the lady at the post office, who knew them well, called them. “She said this man wants to talk to you about making some zombie Babies.” So he stopped by and delivered the first batch. Those dolls left a lot to be desired. “I started laughing and said ‘damn, man, mine look better than that. You’re going to have to improve,’” Linda said. A few week s l ater t he Quicks were contacted by A ssociate P roducer Jol ly Dale. “She said, ‘I’ve got you some Barbies.’ I said, ‘I hope they look better than the other ones.’” They did. They were all grayish, with horrible expressions on their faces. A n d t h e n e a rl i e r t h i s

Art can be a powerful means of social commentary for young people. That concept is certainly the case for Dongeun Kim of Northgate High School. This last school year, Kim was a senior enrolled in the Advanced Placement 2-D Design class at Northgate, taught by Ron Almand. She initially created a piece called “Dead

Maybe the dolls are used in wide shots to stand in for human extras, but they don’t know that for sure. “They took too much time... just to give them to me,” Linda said. Having people drop off Barbies to leave at the beach is, of course, nothing new to the Quicks. It happens all the time. They usually come naked. One woman brought her late mother’s seashell collection. “They were here from California for the funeral,” Linda said. “They brought a sack of seashells and said that ‘momma wanted the Barbies to have her seashells.’” They wanted to see if the Quicks would use them. “We’ve used them several times,” Linda said. There’s always a need for fresh Barbies. “After they have been out there in the rain and the heat and cold and stuff, they get grungy,” Linda said. Some of them are spray painted for various reasons, such as pink ones for when they celebrate the Pink Posse, a local organization that supports cancer patients.
