Evans Middle chorus teacher quarterfinalist for Grammy’s Music Educator Award J

ohnny Holloway, chorus teacher at Evans Middle School in Newnan, is a quarterfinalist for the inaugural national Grammy Music Educator Award. He i s a mong nom i nees f rom across the United States for the new award, which is being presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation. Holloway is also a graduate student at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, where he is studying to receive his master’s in music education degree. Holloway is one of 217 music teachers from 195 cities across 45 states who have been announced as quarterfinalists for the award. More than 30,000 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states. His experience at UWG has influenced his approach to teaching, officials said. “My UWG classes have taught me that experiential, hands-on learning is best,” said Holloway. “I’ve cer-

tainly benefitted from it, and I hope to always do the same for my students as well. I want to inspire them to create, no matter where their paths lead.” The award will be presented to one outstanding music teacher who has shown remarkable impact on his or her students’ lives. Holloway is passionate about music and teaching, and one of his goals as a teacher is to prepare his students for the real world. “Of course we cover music theory and all aspects of performance,” he said. “But I feel it’s important to teach them the business side as well. I want them to be able to transform their passions into a way of life.” The semifinalists for the Grammy Music Educator Awa rd w i l l be announced in August. Celebrity chef Aarón Sánchez shares his favorite weeknight recipes, which use easy, flavorful ingre dients to get families out of the kitchen and at the table in record time. “As a chef with a young family, I love creating delicious dishes that are quick and easy to prepare,” Sánchez said. “My new recipes bring that flavor and simplicity together. The growing pipeline from Coweta County to professional baseball continued during the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft. Former Northgate High and Auburn Tiger pitcher Conner Kendrick was selected by the New York Yankees in the ninth round with the 283rd overall pick. Kendrick, a left-handed pitcher, completed his first year at Auburn after transferring from Northwest Florida State College. In 19 games, including nine starts, Kendrick went 5-3 with a 2.13 ERA in 80 1/3 innings. He also led the Tigers with 75 strikeouts. Before arriving at Auburn, Kendrick spent one season at Northwest Florida State, posting a 4.46 ERA. He signed with Georgia Tech out of high school and spent his freshman season with the Yellow Jackets program. Kendrick is the third Northgate graduate to be drafted in the MLB draft since 2008. Pitcher Will Smith was selected by the Anaheim Angels in the seventh round of the 2008 draft., and Conner’s older brother Catlan by Texas in the 2009 draft in the 49th round. Smith was later traded to the Kansas City Royals and made his major league debut last season. Catlan elected to go to college and just completed his senior year at Kennesaw State.

Before heading to college, Conner built an impressive while playing for head coach Greg Hamilton, posting a 15-1 record and a .450 ERA. During his junior year, he was part of the Vikings’ Kendrick Class AAAA state title team in 2009. Kendrick is the eighth Auburn player drafted by the Yankees since 1966. East Coweta (Cam Bedrosian and Bryan Blough), and Newnan (Jesse Wierzbicki and Marc Frazier) have each had two players drafted in the last six years. Former Heritage School pitcher Jack Duffey was selected in 2010. Outfielder Kyle Wren, who played at Landmark Christian School in Fairburn before going to Georgia Tech, was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 253rd pick in the eighth round. The redshirt junior hit .360 for Georgia Tech this year. Wren is the son of Atlanta general manager Frank Wren.

A win is a win The dirty truth There are certain rules that should apply when one’s significant other is away for more than, say, five days. Namely, if the house still st a nd s , t he a n i m a l s st i l l breathe and the offspring still have all bones intact, we consider that a success. In the past, the Little Black Dress has not been quite as pleased with my view of success. Things such as the exact number of baths, if any, cleaning of rooms, and changing clothes more than once come to mind. We will let the number of pizza nights and actual bedtimes followed pass. But this trip was different. The Dress was just glad to be home. And it helped that we actually did eat real food and actually vacuumed and changed clothes probably helped our case. And she had clean sheets. Even I can only handle so many days of constant SONs of Thunder and assorted animals wrestling and sleeping in my bed before I go “this is gross.” But I think the real reason we got a pass was because the LBD had quite a wonderful time serving as the chaplain for the Miss Oklahoma pageant. There was even a story about her, complete with photo, on the Religion front page of The Tulsa World. She was satisfied with the story, probably because she liked the photo. Lord help the photographer if that didn’t turn out. And so now we have a new media star in the family. And as important is the fact she made it home with all her suitcases. Ah yes, the suitcases. The Dress, as dear readers know, has a certain style. Hence, suitcases as suitcases simply will not do. No, the LBD’s traveling gear consists of a large zebra-print suitcase, wit h accompa nying roller bag. Due to the vast number of outfit changes, and shoes of course, required for the weeklong pageant, additional carrying bags are required. And the only thing that would suffice was my oversized case one normally uses to ship golf bags and clubs. Let us picture this for a moment. The LBD is dressed to the nines with the appropriate traveling accessories, plus a very large golf bag carrier, and arrives at the Atlanta airport. At least the golf bag was black. To her credit, she has weighed each bag down to the gram and each fall under the dreaded 50-pound limit. This is important because otherwise they charge you an extra $90. As an aside, remember when you could check three or four bags for free? Now, your first bag is free IF you use said airline’s credit card. Somehow they have us thinking they are doing us a favor. A n y w a y, a l l g o e s we l l throughout the week and The Dress packs up and heads to the Tulsa airport. Unfortunately, it appears The Dress has picked up a “few things” in Tulsa. And if you said shoes,

step up and claim your prize. So here she is at the airport with a very large zebra-striped bag, the accompanying zebraprint roller bag, the large black golf bag carrier and her purse. And the large zebra-print bag weighs in at 58 pounds. Now the very nice ticket agent tries to help The Dress figure how to rearrange everything so she doesn’t hit the weight limit. This means The Dress opens up her bags in front of the entire ticket line and starts removing items while the suitcase sits on the scale. She discovered that one pair of shoes alone weighed two pounds. Another agent comes from the bag, surveys the scene and starts to laugh. He even starts taking pictures with his camera phone. Do not give him too hard a time, because other passengers in line, in between taking their own photos and laughing, are trying to help The Dress out as well. Eventually, if I have this right, the big zebra-print gets to 50 pounds. However, this involved using yet another “shopping” bag to put in various new shoes and of course a new purse. So now we have all the aforementioned items plus another large shopping bag. She somehow actually gets through security. However, at the gate they tell her the zebra rolling bag will have to be checked at the gate. So she pulls all her jewelry and other items out of that bag, puts the shoes in the rolling bag and yes, this is all done in front of everyone waiting to board. Fast forward to the Atlanta airport. And let us recap to make sure we have everything at baggage claim, namely, a large zebra-print bag, an even larger golf bag carrier, a zebra rolling bag, another shopping bag and the oversized purse. The question remains, how to get said safari gear to the curbside. Being The Dress, she is not without help for long. Stewart and Tyler, who worked in the baggage area, soon came to her rescue and got her “items” to the curb. And so we have several people from different states to thank for getting The Dress and The Shoes home safe. And for those dying to know whether I did in fact pick out the right faucets as I wrote about last week in the column on the DIY project from hell, The Dress did indeed smile, thank you very much. A big risk on that one, but a win is a win.

I was blessed with the best bunch of uncles that ever lived. They ranged from sophisticated gentlemen to no-nonsense farm boys, and each had a gift for storytelling that made family gatherings memorable. My uncles had opi n ions about everything and never hesitated to share them. But they had one thing in common when it came to politics: they couldn’t stand phonies or hypocrites. Especially my Uncle Roy. He was 100 percent Cajun, born and raised on the banks of Bayou Teche not far from New Iberia, La. He grew up with a shotgun in one hand and fishing pole in the other and was putting food on the family table before he could spell “groceries.” Uncle Roy left school as soon as he was old enough to cut cane in the south Louisiana sugar fields. He had a knack for the business, and by the early 1930s, supervised a sugar cane crew in Clewiston, Fl. That’s where he met my Aunt Sallie, who was teaching ABCs to the local school kids. Uncle Roy was a bayou-bred hellraiser who burned the candle at both ends and had more rough edges than a plank of hand-chopped cypress. He watched his manners around the ladies, but when the men got together to drink a few beers, he didn’t mince any words. Uncle Roy let you k now

exactly how he felt about anybody. The term SOB (spoken in full) was frequently invoked. But some of Uncle Roy’s opinions were surprising. He thought the world of Oklahoma evangelist and faith healer Oral Roberts and loved to watch on TV as Roberts worked a crowd into a lather. Uncle Roy didn’t believe a syllable of what he called Roberts’ “mumbo-jumbo,” but he appreciated the preacher’s zeal and enthusiasm. “You know he’s a (expletive deleted) fake,” Uncle Roy said, “but you gotta admire him ‘cause he’s so (expletive deleted) good at it.” Politicians rarely rated so high in Uncle Roy’s opinion. By the time Roy Green was old enough to vote, Huey P. Long was running Louisiana. Huey’s faults were numerous and well-documented, but he promised to make “every man a king” and Uncle Roy believed that as long as Huey paved roads, built bridges and created jobs, he could do no wrong. In Uncle Roy’s opinion, other politicians could do no

right. He believed they were all cut from the same soiled diaper and filled with a soiled diaper’s contents. He’d take one look (or listen) to a politician and say, “He’s full of BS.” (Uncle Roy did not abbreviate.) Today, Uncle Roy would need a new term to describe the current members of the US Congress. The old-timers he despised cheated, lied, chased strippers and stuffed overcoats with $100 bills, but when caught, either admitted their transgressions or bragged about them. Not a ny more. Pol it ica l favors are bought and sold like ball game peanuts, and politicians routinely become millionaires by gaming the system in ways that anywhere else would rate jail time. All the while, they proclaim their innocence and never get called to account.

In her own words, Georgia’s own Anita Renfroe says that she went from being a stay-athome-mom to a YouTube comedic “Phe-mom-enon.” Her kids put her up to posting her “Mom Song” on YouTube, and the next morning, “ABC’s Good Morning America” producers were calling. Robin Roberts and Diane Sawyer wanted permission to play her video on their show. Eventually, “Good Morning America” hired Renfroe to do comedy bits for them. She humbly admits that she had planned to remove the video the next day, but it went viral, getting more than five million hits. This mother of three’s YouTube hit cleverly includes lyrics that consist of every motherly cliché you could think of, to the tune of The William Tell Overture (“The Lone Ranger’s Theme”). Her style of humor is one to which most women can relate. “ I ’d rat her people laug h because they relate to something I say than because I wrote a clever punch line,” Renfroe

said. “All my stuff is about my life.” Often compa red to Erma Bombeck, this comedienne does comedy concert tours all over the country. In addition to “Good Morning America,” she has been featured on “Dr. Phil,” CBS’s “The Early Show,” Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” and “Inside Edition.” She starred in a sitcom pilot for Sony/ABC with Ryan Stiles and the late Dixie Carter. Some of Renfroe’s best known projects are DVD’s with titles like “I’m Not High Maintenance, Just Low Tolerance” and “Big Ol’ Sweet Iced Tea.” Renfroe is known for her participation in the Women of Faith Christian women’s conferences. When asked about her faith, she stresses, “It is the foundation of who I am.” Much of t he m ater ia l i n Renfroe’s comedy act is taken directly from her experience as a wife and mother. Reflecting on her biggest challenge as a mother, she shared, “It is dealing with the fact that if you do your job right, they leave. Mothers have a front row seat to their children’s lives. Stechmann named Georgia Scholar Cara Stechmann, a senior at The Heritage School, has been honored as a 2013 Georgia Scholar by the Georgia Department of Education. The Georgia Scholar Program is an effort by the Georg ia Depa r tment of Education to identify and recognize high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. The program is coordinated by the Office of School Improvement of the Georgia Department of Education. “Cara is a challenging student in the best sense of the word,” said English teacher Glenda Davis. “She keeps her teachers on their toes to stay steps ahead of her incredible intellect.” To be selected as a Georgia Scholar, a student must be a graduating high school senior who exhibits excellence in all phases of school life, in community activities, and in the

home. The student must present evidence of having carried an exemplary course load in the four years of high school; performed excellently in all courses; successfully participated in interscholastic events of the school or community; and assumed an active role in extracurricular activities sponsored by the school. “We could not be prouder of Cara and her accomplishments,” said Head of School J.P. Watson. “She is an exemplary student with a promising future.” Stechmann was also named STAR student for Heritage, for having achieved the highest SAT score among her graduating class. Stechmann chose Davis as her STAR teacher. Stechmann is the daughter of Erik and Marlisa Stechmann of Peachtree City. She plans to attend Emory University to study film and media management.

Submit to new Mystery Story Contest The Friends of the Powell Library group is holding a mystery writing contest for youth and teens in conjunction with its fall 2013 Annual Author Party, which will feature Patricia Sprinkle, “a thoroughly Southern mystery writer.” Each short story should be between 1,000-2,500 words and should feature a corresponding book cover. Writers and illustrators must be 10 to 18 years old. Two youths may collaborate on the entry and split a prize. There will be a grand prize winner from these three levels: Elementary School, Middle School and High School. These winners will receive a $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble.

Winning entries will be displayed at the A. Mitchell Powell Jr. Public Library on Hospital Road in Newnan as well as published on the library’s website. The deadline for entries is Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. Winners will be announced at the Friends of the Powell Library 2013 Author Party and Annual Meeting on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at the nearby Asa M. Chicken Taco Casserole

Servings: 8 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef 1 1.25-ounce package Taco Seasoning Mix 1/2 cup water, divided 1 16-ounce can Refried Beans 9 Flour Soft Tortillas 2 10-ounce cans Mild Red Enchilada Sauce 1 16-ounce jar Thick and Chunky Salsa 8 ounces shredded Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese Preheat oven to 350°F. Heat vegetable oil in large skillet over medium heat and cook onion and garlic for 4 min utes or until softened. Add ground beef and cook for 4 minutes or until browned. Stir in taco seasoning and 1/4 cup water. Cook for 2 minutes or until sauce thickens. Heat refried beans in microwave or small saucepan and stir in remaining 1/4 cup water to thin slightly. Cut one tortilla in half and fit cut ends at either end of a 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish. Arrange two tortillas, slightly overlapping, to cover the bottom. Layer 1/3 refried beans, 1/3 meat mixture and 1 can enchilada sauce. Repeat to make a second layer. Repeat to make a third layer using salsa instead of enchilada sauce. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 20 min utes or until lasagna is bubbling and cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting. If desired, top servings with sour cream and diced green onion.

Servings: 4 Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes 4 Taco Shells, any variety 1/2 pound ground pork 1/2 1.25-ounce package Taco Seasoning Mix or 40% Less Sodium Taco Seasoning Mix 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 10-ounce can Mild Red Enchilada Sauce 1/4 cup water 2 ripe avocados 1 1-ounce package Guacamole Seasoning Mix 12 Fiesta Flats Taco Shells Shredded lettuce Place taco shells in food processor and pulse until coarse crumbs form. (Or place in resealable plastic bag and crush.) Combine crumbs, pork and taco seasoning in mixing bowl. Form mixture into small meatballs, about 1/2 inch in diameter. Heat oil in large skillet and brown meatballs lightly, in batches if necessary, about 5 minutes per batch, turning frequently. Return meatballs to skillet and add enchilada sauce and water. Bring to boil over high heat; reduce heat and simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes or until meatballs are thoroughly cooked. Meanwhile, mash avocados and stir in guacamole seasoning mix. Let rest in the refrigerator according to package instructions. To serve, spoon meatballs and sauce into Fiesta Flats. Top each with shredded lettuce and guacamole. If desired, also top with Taco Sauce and Diced Green Chiles.

Servings: 6 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes 12 Yellow corn or white corn taco shells 3 cups shredded cooked chicken 8 ounces shredded Monterey Jack cheese 2 cups chicken stock 1 1.25-ounce package 40% Less Sodium Taco Seasoning Mix 1 16 ounce container sour cream 1 16 ounce jar Salsa, any variety Juice of 1 lime Preheat oven to 350°F. Break taco shells into large chips. Combine taco chips, chicken, cheese, stock and taco seasoning in large mixing bowl. Spread mixture in 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish. Top with 1 1/2 cups sour cream; pour salsa over sour cream. Bake for 25 minutes, or until hot and bubbling. Meanwhile, stir lime juice into remaining sour cream. Remove casserole from oven, drizzle sour cream and lime mixture over top and serve at once.

Servings: 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes 1 pound ground beef 1 1.25-ounce package Taco Seasoning Mix or 40% Less Sodium Taco Seasoning Mix 1/2 cup water 6 ounces American cheese, cubed 1 16-ounce jar Salsa, any variety 12 Fiesta Flats Taco Shells Chopped fresh cilantro Brown beef in large skillet over medium-high heat; drain. Stir in taco seasoning and water. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until thickened. Meanwhile, combine cheese and one cup salsa in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook on high for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring every 20 seconds, until smooth. Evenly spoon meat mixture into Fiesta Flats and top with cheese mixture. Top with additional salsa and sprinkle with cilantro. If desired, also top with Taco Sauce and Diced Green Chiles.
