West Georgia Technical College’s new Coweta Campus opening soon
“Newnan has wanted this for a long time,” said WGTC’s president, Dr. Skip Sullivan. “I’m excited that we are bringing this to Newnan and Coweta County. We want to be the first choice of education in Coweta County.” Currently, the new facility consists of two buildings on 38 acres of land. The master plan includes eight total buildings. One building, the state building, consists of classrooms. The second, the Allied Health Building, is being funded but the West Georgia Technical College Fou ndat ion a nd w i l l hou se hea lt h profession programs including ones for emergency medical technician, geriatric care, registered nursing, and physical therapy assisting. The Coweta campus will be the only one currently offering the physical therapy assistant program. Dr. Sullivan also indicated that they hope to have opportunities for other schools to hold classes there, making the new campus

That was when Kahlil Smith, a 19-year-old employee of the Hampton Inn, came to the rescue. Smith went out and helped peer down the fouror fivefootdeep drain to look for the ring. Together with Tallie, the two finally saw the glint of something inside, but there was no way for the drain’s metal grate to be opened or pried up. o cookout, picnic or potluck is complete without potato salad. Whether it’s served warm, cold, creamy, cheesy or with a splash of vinegar, the dish is a true American cookout classic. Potato salads are easy to make and even easier to pack full of flavor. Craft your own potato salad by cutting a delicious, Idaho® potato into cubes with the skins still on. Boil in water for about 8 to 15 minutes, then check for doneness by piercing a cube with a fork or skewer. If the fork goes through the potato with little resistance, drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add your favorite dressing and ingredients while the potatoes are still warm. Warm potatoes more easily absorb the delicious dressing. These decadent dishes are best eaten the day after they’re made to give the flavors time to meld. When you’re ready to serve your potato salad, keep it cold by placing your serving dish in a larger bowl filled with ice.

u s e to re t r ie ve t he r i n g , Morrow said. After a few trips back and forth, Smith was able to build exactly what he needed using a skinny pole, a clothes hanger and some duct tape. Then with much effort, lying on his stomach on the parking lot and baking in the Georgia heat, he calmly and carefully hooked Morrow’s ring and slowly lifted it to the surface. “It was just a n a ma zi ng sight,” Morrow said. “And, of course, me being a grandmama, I smiled and hugged him. We went back inside and I found the manager and said, ‘Give this young man a raise.’ He seemed to be embarrassed by all the fuss I was making.” “My excitement was not so much about the ring,” Morrow said. “Sure it is valuable to me and worth hundreds of dollars, but it is just an object. I was more amazed by [Smith] and his willingness to help a stranger in need.” As a reward for his help and for completely brightening Morrow’s day, Morrow gave Smith as much cash as she could find on her, wishing she had more to give. She made him promise not to spend

it on bills or gasoline, but on something he really wanted. According to Sandy Lee, director of sales at the Hampton Inn and Smith’s mentor, the two of them went shoe shopping to buy Smith a new pair of sneakers later that day. Mor row was not done rewarding Smith yet, though. After talking to Lee and the other managers at the hotel, Morrow found out that Smith was not currently in school. After getting in trouble a few times, Smith was not able graduate high school. But he recently began working on school again and passed his General Education Development test through the South Georgia Technical College. Morrow learned that Smith loved taking photographs with his phone and would like to one day be either a photographer or a coach. “So I thought, I am going to find this young man a camera,” Morrow said. When she returned home, Morrow called the Hampton corporate headquarters, wrote on the Hampton Inn website and told everyone she could about Smith. Over the weekend, Morrow bought Smith a camera, and on Tuesday she surprised him with it at the Hampton. Smith, Morrow, Lee and the other hotel managers were overjoyed by the occasion.

WGTC’s Coweta Campus. “But we want to have quality education with leaders who know what they are doing and are consistent with the mission of this school and the community.” As associate provost, Ludlow hopes to establish WGTC as an internal part of the Coweta community that develops programs, services, and business relationships, meeting the needs and wants of the community. The new Coweta Campus will also offer instruction in business administration, criminal justice, early childhood development and learning, and computer technology as well as core classes in English, psychology, and other disciplines. It also has a library that will be open to the public. “This is our community’s building,” said Dr. Sullivan. “We are going to do our best to keep it a part of the community.” The new facility includes a community room that will be open for the public to use and will highlight industries in the Coweta County area. Pre-enrollment for the new Coweta Campus has begun, and the first classes there are slated to start on Aug. 12.

ning and guidance to Smith once he decides when to continue his education. Managers at the Hampton Inn are pleased to have Smith on staff and often consider him their guardian angel, Lee said. “I a m so proud of him,” Morrow said. “I applaud his respectfulness, sensitivity, determination, initiative and willingness to provide assistance far, far beyond what might be considered his job.”
Morrow was sti ll not finished. She also got in touch with two other people to help out Smith in his future endeavors. Tony Mitchell, a photographer at Sharp Eye Video and Photography in Norcross, agreed to a llow Sm it h to shadow him during a photography shoot and provide instruction. And Lula Gilliam of Youth Enhancement Services offered to provide educational plan-

They have the equipment and facilities that they will see in the workplace after school. For example, students in the EMT program will be able to simulate everything that happens in an ambulance from the call to when it arrives at the hospital. The new facility also has expanded science labs allowing WGTC to offer classes in Coweta County that it was unable to offer before. “This new science lab is four times the size of the current one,” said Dr. Jeremy Bishop, a biology instructor at WGTC. “It brings with it new programs. We will be offering microbiology for the first time in the spring.” “We don’t want to just have a beautiful building, said Peter Ludlow, associate provost at

Life is full of crazy, humbling moments humbling moments, like the time I was at a restaurant and left the bathroom dressed in my Sunday best dragging toilet paper on my other killer heels. T ha n k God some precious God-fearing man came to tell me. Again, I had to laugh and remember that even when dragging toilet paper on a killer pair of heels, they are still a killer pair of heels! Just the other night I had the honor to meet the Mayor of Newnan and his wife and the City Manager and his wife as well. Yes, pictures and smiles and all. Best part was I had a gigantic peppercorn lodged between my teeth. O k , G o d r e a l l y h a ve n’ t I lea r ned enoug h “ hu m i lity” or “humblences” as my friend Betsy calls it. The best is Winters never even noticed the pepper. I guess he was so enthralled with what the LBD was wearing he never even saw my smile with the pepper. You gotta love it! Humility is a great life lesson for all of us — and remembering to laugh at ourselves is, too. So remember to take a moment to laugh at yourself and whether we are all put together or not God loves our imperfections and I can just hear the Lord saying, “hey, Corby, you are human and whether you have a price tag on your shoe, or you are escorting toilet paper from the bathroom on you heels, or you have a gigantic pepper between your teeth, I love you just the same and you are beautiful to me no matter what.” Dea r f r iends , my l i fe i s wacky. I have pictures to prove it. I know that and I do not claim to be any different. I have my own thorns in the flesh that I struggle with, embarrassing moments to live with and a wonderful family and friends to share it with. We certainty have perfect moments, but our lives are anything other than perfect. So to all the other LBD’s out there, I pray you will remember that no matter how crazy your life may appear in pictures or in real life, God uses all of our stories, the good, the bad, the ugly and yes, even the wacky, to give glory and honor to him — whether you are all put together or not.
CORBY WINTERS
(Our normal columnist was off in the woods with the SONs of Thunder at Boy Scout camp this week, so the Little Black Dress is substituting.)
Sometimes it is easy to look at others’ lives and think they seem so perfect and have it all together. Well, that may be true until they look at mine. Winters sometimes finds it just a tad hard being married to a former pageant queen. Most of the time we are just regular gals, but we do have a few pesky quirks. We love to dress up any chance we can and almost never leave the house without makeup. Thank God Winters loves that. But I also have the sense to not take heels camping, thank you very much! But The LBD is also very particular when it comes to photos. It’s driven Winters crazy for years. Photos last a lifetime — good or bad. Every woman knows that. So there is an “unwritten photo code” with my friends: take it, check it, then delete and take again if it is not acceptable for all other eyes to see. But now we have “ tags.” Those goofy pictures posted on Facebook. The ones you haven’t proofed and you look anything but great. For the LBD, that is usually when camping with Winters and The SONs, then the comments start rolling in like, “You look great” or “You look so happy.” Camping and “you look great” usually don’t go hand in hand. And good hair day is non-existent. I promise you have never seen a women run so fast in all your life to hit the delete button! My dear buddies and I took a zillion pictures while I was serving as chaplain at the Miss Oklahoma pageant a couple of weeks ago. These are the dear friends who know the “photo code.” But sometimes, even with all the best proof ing, things get by. Life can be full of humbling moments. For me it was while wearing a purple dress sitting back with my heels kicked up on the white leather chair at the pageant. I love this picture for many reasons, but most of all because smack dab on the bottom of my fabulous heels, I mean really, fabulous heels, clear as day you can see I never removed the price tag. I have had a million laughs about this so I decided to share the picture of the price tag with the world. Laughing is good for the soul. Yes, life is full of crazy and

I try not to travel in the sum mer. At least not for pleasure. And certainly not to “popula r” tourist destinations. But sometimes the travel bug strikes at the height of the sunny season and faraway places whisper my name. Or scream. It’s happening now. So I’m pondering new and exciting potential travel destinations. Florida is always fun, but if you’re looking to avoid the mobs, then from May through Labor Day, it’s best to shun spots overrun with hordes of gaudily-dressed, sunscreensoaked tourists snapping pictures of sandy beaches and sunburned tots. And it’s actually easy to find a tourist-free Florida hideaway. Just read the Florida police reports. T hat ’s how Little Econ State Forest i n Sem i nole County hit my travel radar screen. Little Econ is halfway between Disney World and Daytona and so far from the nearest Interstate that no one goes there by accident.
Which makes it an ideal spot to escape the crowds and enjoy relaxing activities like gathering “magic” mushrooms and poaching protected critters. That’s exactly what five dudes were doing when they were busted at Little Econ by Florida Fish and Wildlife officials who caught them roa m i ng t he pi nes bea ring backpacks bulging with marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms and a two-foot alligator. The dudes were locked up and the gator was set free and the bust made all the local papers. That means the mushroom-eating, gatorthieving crowd won’t be visiting for a while, making Little Econ State Forest the perfect getaway. It’s a definite maybe. Of course, once you leave the beach breezes behind, summertime Florida is basically a tropical crock pot featuring blistering heat, brutal humidity and mosquitoes the size of hummingbirds. Which makes tourist-free northern destinations a n attractive option. The perfect place might be Preston, Minnesota. Preston is home to about 1,300 folks and sits on the Root River in southeastern Minnesota. It’s close to Austin, Mn., home of Hormel Foods, the makers of Spam.
Better yet, Preston is relatively free of gophers. Mostly because there is a bounty on the notso-cute critters that drove Bill Murray crazy in “Caddyshack.” I didn’t glean this nugget from the Min nesota Tourism Commission, but from a police report announcing that a local mother and son had been busted for stealing frozen gopher feet. When’s the last time that happened in your home town? Thought so. The theft was reported by a trapper who told cops several bags of gopher feet had been stolen from his freezer. Off icers checked a ll t he nea rby tow ns t hat offered bou nt ie s for gopher s a nd quickly discovered that Tina Marie Garrison and her son, Junior Lee Dillon, had cashed in almost five grand worth of frozen feet. Since frozen gopher feet — or thieves —aren’t an ideal tourist attraction, Preston might be the perfect getaway. Especially when the Spam Museum and Visitor Center is open. Of course, nothing beats vis-

iting a new country. There are hundreds I haven’t seen yet, but I’ve been cautious about overseas travel since learning the government is collecting records of my phone calls, emails and Internet activity. Since my columns sometimes contain words the IRS, TSA and CIA consider suspicious —like “freedom” — chances are good my name is already on the no-fly terrorist watch list. That limits my options. Right now the only place I know my passport will pass muster is Turkey. Don’t take my word for it. Ask the parents of 9-year-old British girl Emily Harris, who recently cleared Turkish customs with a passport identifying her as a pink unicorn. Complete with picture. If Turkish officials are allowing pink unicorns into the country, they should welcome a redneck with open arms. Watch out, Istanbul. Bubba’s on the way.

Potato and Pesto Chicken Salad
Skin Cancer Specialists, P.C.
(pictured on front page)
Hot German Potato Salad Yield: 6 servings 4 medium Idaho potatoes 2 bacon strips 1 diced Spanish onion 1/2 cup diced celery 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1/3 cup cider vinegar 1 cup water Boil potatoes in skins and peel while hot. Slice potatoes thinly. In large skillet, fry bacon until crisp and remove from skillet. In bacon drippings, brown onion and celery. Stir in salt, sugar and cornstarch. Add vinegar and water. Stir in sliced potatoes; as sauce thickens while adding potatoes, more water may be needed. Transfer to serving dish and serve hot.
Yield: 8 servings 2 pounds Idaho potatoes, well scrubbed (peeled, if desired) 1 pound fresh green beans, washed and trimmed 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch cubes 3/4 cup prepared pesto sauce 3 to 6 cups mixed salad greens (optional) Over high heat, in a large, heavy pot with tight-fitting cover, bring half a pot of water to boil. Meanwhile, cut potatoes in half lengthwise, then cut crosswise in 1/2inch slices. Add potatoes to boiling water, cover and return to boiling; cook 3 minutes. Add green beans to pot with potatoes and cook another 4 minutes; drain potatoes and beans and set aside. (Vegetables should be firm.) In same pot, heat olive oil over high heat and cook chicken, stirring 6 to 8 minutes or until meat is completely cooked through. Remove from heat; stir in pesto sauce, then gently stir in potatoes and green beans, taking care not to break up vegetables. Serve salad warm or at room temperature on a bed of salad greens, if desired.
