Motorcycle Club speeds toward helping others By Gloria Hahn Tinsley Special to The Newnan Times-Herald

n 1990, Bobby Terrell, aka “Bobby T,” had sought happiness in a bottle but came to the point where it had “gotten the best” of him. Urged by family and friends, he realized he needed to quit drinking and decided to give up his playmates and playgrounds. One friend told him, “You probably need to give up your motorcycle, too.” They butted heads over this important facet of Bobby’s life for a few days, and Terrell emphatically insisted that he could never give up his motorcycle. “I decided that I would find other people who love to ride and can do so in a clean and sober environment,” he said. His friends and family agreed, and from that point forward he pursued a new, positive focus for his life. He found a dozen new friends from

the Columbus area who thought similarly, and began the Straight Spokes Motorcycle Club. The rules were straightforward: No drinking or drugging while driving a motorcycle or while wearing the club patch. Bobby discovered this new lifestyle was exhilarating and enjoyed the camaraderie with like-minded individuals. Shortly thereafter, Desert Storm cranked up. Many club members were stationed at Fort Benning, so they had to depart for duty, leaving about three members. Soon everyone moved in different directions and areas, so Bobby found himself the lone member of the club, but kept himself grounded in his nowserene life. Fast forward to 2008-09. One day while cycling around country roads, Bobby stopped into the Manchester restaurant Duck’s Trolley

for a bite. Two motorcycle enthusiasts had also stopped by to grab lunch, and they struck up a conversation with Bobby. Not only did Mark Grubb, a ka “Foots,” and Chris Breed share a passion for motorcycles, but as they

talked, he discovered that they, too, had “turned over new leaves.” Drinking and/or drugging was already a past nightmare, and “clean living” was important to them, as well. As the guys bonded over Southern cooking, Bobby shared his past tri-

Bridging the Gap has a new home — and a new partnership with Meals on Wheels of Coweta. BTG and MOWOC now have a partnership that leaders with both groups say will allow them to serve the needs of senior citizens in the community. This month, BTG will begin providing cooked meals to MOWOC — which will continue their program of delivering meals to seniors in Coweta County. “We were looking for ways to increase service to seniors in need. Our funding had been cut back over the past several years and we had to think outside the box for solutions,” said Don Gangell, president of the MOWOC board of directors. “With perfect timing, in stepped BTG,” he said. BTG has recently relocated to a new facility on First Avenue in downtown Newnan, and the new space includes kitchen facilities that will be built out to further support the partnership. This move has allowed BTG to expand services to partner with MOWOC.

Alison Wallace, BTG’s founder and director, said the organization’s approach is to unconditionally serve people in need. For two years, BTG has been collecting data on almost everyone who has come through the doors to receive food or other services. “What we have found is that a simple box of food will not cure the root issues. In fact, it will only bring relief for a few days. The goal, then, is to identify the root issues of hunger and poverty and work to bring lasting change to individuals and families,” Wallace said. While BTG got its start distributing food that was near its expiration date — donated by grocery stores — “we’ve never been about feeding people,” Wallace said, but rather about learning “why they have a need and coming up with solutions.” During the month of January 2013, in providing approximately 1,300 pounds of food, BTG identified that 32 percent of the food recipients were senior citizens. This realization laid the plans for

Drink Stations Allow guests to refill their drinks themselves by placing drinks on a small end table or cart. Cover it with a brightly colored tablecloth and stacked glasses. Don’t forget your ice bucket and tongs for mixed cocktails. If you are serving beer or wine, ice them down in galvanized bins placed next to the drink station. Be sure to position the station away from the food to keep lines from forming.

Losing my shower As I get older, sometimes I think about those simple things that no longer exist, at least in their simple forms. We grow up, get married, have kids and and what was our bachelor pad is now, if you are lucky, a chair in the corner. But you have to take the pillows off first — stacked nicely mind you. I am not complaining. My life is far more complete with the Little Black Dress and the

SONs of Thunder. But there are times when I wish I could just have certain things back … Like the shower.

Legal briefs On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia and what became the greatest nation on earth was born. We revere the founding fathers, mothers and “others” who established this nation, but it’s a good thing the oldtimers have passed on. If they were alive today, those longdead revolutionaries would be the first to take up arms and shoot voters for electing the legislative losers that run America today. It’s ironic that July is also the month when hundreds of new state laws take effect across the country—laws that would leave Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and John Hancock scratching their heads. Not that all new laws are bad. We rejoice that five-year olds don’t work in U.S. factories any more. One day the practice might be outlawed at Nike factories in Asia. But some of the new laws springing up across the fruited plain leave you shaking your head. And not in agreement. Entries in the 2013 Stupid Law Hall of Dishonor are real doozies. For example: In North Carolina, it is now a felony to steal more than $1,000 worth of grease. My question: does the law concern axle grease, bacon grease or both? It matters. In California, prison workers will no longer be allowed to have sex with inmates. This one shocked Golden Staters who thought it was already illegal. Or should be. But don’t worry. Cell block sexuality is not banished forever. Prison employees and inmates can still hook up during conjugal visits if they just get married, which is perfectly legal in the Golden State. Put a ring on THAT, Beyonce. In holiday news, Illinois sex offenders are now prohibited from dressing like Santa or handing out candy at Halloween. There should be an adult version of this law that prohibits politicians from handing out goodies to lobbyists or voters. As of July 1, any Maryland property owner who dared improve his premises by installing driveways, parking lots, sidewalks or other impervious surfaces, will pay

a “rain tax.” The funds will allegedly be spent to protect state waterways from stormwater runoff. I wonder if the state will tax itself for building roads that do the same thing on a grander scale? Don’t hold your breath. Another new Maryland law establishes a task force to study whether or not schools should open before Labor Day. Hopefully, the study will also examine the cultural impact of wearing white shoes after Labor Day. Colorado made big news last year when it legalized the sale and use of marijuana and made “Rocky Mountain High” one of two official state songs. Regulations followed. Some are really radical, dude. First, to make sure Colorado’s “munchie” industry is not adversely affected, dope stores will not be permitted to sell snacks or drinks, alcoholic or otherwise. Better yet, marijuana stores can’t sell tobacco. Score one for public health. Right here at home, a new Georgia law establishes a “readiness program” for the unemployed. My guess is, they are “ready” for a job. Hopefully, this helps. Speaking of dumb laws, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg made headlines last year when he forced through a city-wide ban on super-sized soft drinks and huge helpings of junk food. Mississippi lawmakers did just the opposite. In the Magnolia State it is now against the law to limit the size of soft drinks, discourage the sale of junk food or force restaurants to post nutrition information. Obesity may still be a problem in Mississippi, but any law telling the government to mind its own business is one our founding fathers would applaud. Me, too.

In my bachelor days, my shower was equipped with shaving cream, a razor, a bar of Dial gold bar soap and shampoo. Due to my lack of hair on my head, the shampoo could last a year. When The Dress joined me, so did various and assorted bath/shower items. I had never heard of a loofah before, much less knew how to spell it. I did learn it has to do with exfoliation of one’s skin, a word I had never used in a sentence before. These skin scrapers came in various sizes and shapes. We have them all. And my once rather large shower is increasingly shrinking in wall and floor space. There apparently is more

I’ve had for who knows how long. The Dress uses disposable razors, and as I said, she collects them. Ever step on a razor? Things were getting cramped. And then the SONs started showing up. Little things at first. A toy boat or action figure. Easy to move out of the way. But then SON No. 2 and SON No. 3 arrived. It began to get more and more crowded. About this time many of you are asking why we don’t just make them use their own tub/shower. I agree with you. Please point this out in the comments so I can show the LBD. But until then, the SONs have invaded. Seems they like

the idea it’s just a shower. They dig the spray or something. Somehow the whole phrase “clean up after yourselves” refers, at least to them, that they took a shower. They don’t get the part about picking up one’s toys. Many a groggy morning, I have attempted to enter my shower. There is no room because someone left a small battlefield in their wake. The hard part was over. “It’s all downhill from here,” the spectators shout. Wrong. At mile five, another hill hits you, and it’s longer and more brutal because your leg muscles are just screaming at you to lie down. It isn’t as steep as the infamous “Heartbreak Hill,” but it hurts about the same. Somehow, I made it through that one too, but I had that feeling that I was making horrible time. It was very demoralizing,

my goal had been to finish in under an hour, and I thought I was failing. I was tempted to get some beer from some of the spectators on the side. But then I saw the turn — the last mile of nothing but downhill running. There I finally got my second wind because I realized the race was almost over. That’s when the race is the most fun, it makes every bit of pain worth it. I ran as hard as I could for that last stretch, attempting to make up for any lost time. I still had to

dodge and dive around all the slower people, but at that point it seemed like just a game. I waved at the photographers, crossed the finish line at a full sprint, jumped up to tap the finish gate (just something I do that feels appropriate) and ran into Piedmont... Swamp. Mud was everywhere. It was nasty. My legs were like jelly and they were making me walk across a field of wet grass and slippery mud. I felt sorry for anyone who just bought new shoes for the race because

they definitely weren’t new anymore. Anyway, I was victorious. I grabbed my T-shirt, which are really nice this year — a black shirt with a red, white and blue logo. I traversed the mud and grabbed as many free snacks and drinks as I could. And I began the long, uphill trek back to MARTA and eventually back home. Another successful Peachtree Roadrace. I finished in 57 minutes, 40 seconds. I came in 10,795th place. So close...

A Chef Tim Love recipe 1 cup Mayonnaise Dressing with Olive Oil 4 (8-ounce) outside skirt steaks 1/2 cup peanut oil Kosher salt and cracked black pepper (to taste) 2 tablespoons Chef Tim Love Steak Rub* 2 limes, cut in half 2 lemons, cut in half 1 tangerine, cut in half Heat grill on high with lid closed for 30 minutes or light charcoal and let burn to white coals. Rub the steak with oil and season with salt and pepper, then the rub. Place the steak on the hot grill for 3 minutes on each side. Squeeze a lime half on each steak.Remove and rest for at least 3 minutes. Squeeze all citrus into a mixing bowl. Whip the dressing into citrus mixture and place in a squirt bottle. Cut steak against the grain and drizzle the citrus mayonnaise mixture over top. Serve immediately. *Tip: Any good chili powder based rub can be used.

Burst the potatoes and crumble apart. Add them to the mayonnaise mixture. Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Top with the toasted pepitas and serve.

Grilled Asparagus with Citrus Gremolata

A Chef Tim Love recipe 1/2 cup Mayonnaise Dressing with Olive Oil 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon finely chopped garlic 2 tablespoons minced shallot Grated peel of 1 lemon 1/4 cup white wine 1/4 cup lemon juice 1 cup bread crumbs 12 medium asparagus spears, trimmed 2 tablespoons peanut oil Kosher salt and cracked black pepper to taste Preheat grill to 450°F. Heat olive oil in a small sauté pan on the grill. Just before the oil smokes add garlic, shallot, and lemon peel. Sauté slightly. Add white wine and lemon juice and simmer for 1 minute. Add bread crumbs and dressing and sauté until golden brown. Mix asparagus, peanut oil, salt and pepper. Grill for 3 minutes, turning fairly frequently. Place asparagus on a serving platter. Sprinkle bread crumb mixture over the grilled asparagus and serve.

One of Graham’s favorite sayings comes from a leading fresh food guru on the West Coast. “He said, ‘our health is more threatened from drivethroughs than by drive-bys,’” said Graham, noting the pervasiveness of reporting on drive-by shootings but less on the harm caused by fast foods. As the guys bonded over Southern cooking, Bobby shared his past trials and how great his life had become through Straight Spokes. Mark and Chris eagerly listened to their new friend, who also rode a Harley, and then shared their stories. They, too, were grateful to be clean and sober and were interested in the club. The men got together several times, reviewing the parameters of the bylaws. The bottom line was that “Straight Spokes Motorcycle Club is not affiliated with any recovery program, church, religion, or political persuasion; it is basically a group of friends who have a similar value system, are family-oriented, love to ride motorcycles and enjoy helping others.” Straight Spokes started expanding under the leadership of “Bobby T,” with Mark serving as road captain and Chris serving as sergeant-at-arms. Mark enjoys mapping out the routes and teaching motorcycle safety, while Chris enjoys his role of policing the club to ensure everyone abides by their code of ethics. There are now three different chapters south of Atlanta, and the Straight Spokes group meets regularly at a Manchester Clubhouse. As Straight Spokes continued to grow, the group became active in charitable causes. One of those charitable efforts began when friends of Bobby’s, Gene and Cathy Williams, lost their grandson, David
