Apollo Theatre local’s ‘destiny’ Newnan resident wins ‘Stars of Tomorrow’ competition at famed NY venue
By JEAN C. WHEELER Special to The Newnan Times-Herald
When you hear of The Apollo Theatre in New York City, you think of an elite group of African-American entertainers who launched their careers from this historic venue. Long before there was "Star Search,” "American Idol," or “The Voice," talented stars competed on "Amateur Night at the Apollo." Icons of jazz and rhythm and blues like Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Beyonce have performed on the stage of the Apollo Theatre. A talented young Newnan resident has now had the distinct honor of performing at The Apollo Theatre. Newnan High School student Destiny Reeves, after winning "Kid Stars of Tomorrow" in the Atlanta audition, went on to compete in Amateur Night at the Apollo in New York City on June 26. The Kid Stars of Tomorrow was for talented performers ages 15 and younger. At the legendary club, Reeves sang her cover of Beyonce's "Listen.” The 14-year-old vocalist won first place and will be returning to The Apollo Theatre to compete again on Aug. 28. Her photo and performance video
are now posted among The Apollo Theatre's “Stars of Tomorrow” winners on their website. This is the second time Reeves has competed at The Apollo Theatre. She competed there when she was 10, winning the first round — and making it to the second. Donnica Heard, Destiny Reeves’s mother, is justifiably proud. "It makes me feel good because I used to watch 'Apollo Live,' hosted by Gladys Knight,” Heard said. “I never imagined I would be seeing my child on Apollo. It feels wonderful." Reeves’ two little sisters are also among her biggest fans. Encouraged by family and friends, Reeves has auditioned for another nationally known and televised talent search, “The X Factor.” She has tried out twice and made it to the second round on her last try. She is likely to try again. “This year’s ‘American Idol’ tried out three times and ended up winning the whole thing on her last try,” Reeves noted. "I have been singing since I was 2 and I have had piano lessons since I was 7. I sing in churches and many different places. I sing gospel, R&B and pop. People ask me if I get nervous, but I've been singing in church since I was

2, so I am used to it," Reeves said. “I was a member of the chorus during seventh and eighth grades at Smokey Road Middle School in Newnan,” she added. Recalling a memorable moment in her career, Reeves said, “I sang ‘The National Anthem’ at a program my school had to celebrate Black History
Month. The singer, Monica, one of my favorite singers, was the special guest." She got to meet Monica that day. "She told me I did a good job, and she recorded me on her phone when I was singing," Reeves said. YouTube videos show a steady following as a talented little girl with a

PIZZA,
PIZZA! Family Features
Who says pizza is just for dinner? With these recipes, you can get the family together and make pizza for dinner — and breakfast, lunch or snacks. By making it yourself, you can save money and Chef Justin Timineri make it healthier. “It’s easy to turn pizza into a healthy meal. Use a whole wheat crust, garden fresh toppings like tomatoes, and serve it with a salad,” said Chef Justin Timineri, Executive Chef and Culinary Ambassador,.These recipes are not only kid-friendly to eat, they’re kid-ready to make. Older kids can help slice vegetables, and younger kids can help make the pizza crust and add the toppings. Look for the “Grown-Up Alert” on each recipe for tasks adults should handle or help with.

refrigerate a whole tomato. Storing in cold temperatures stops the ripening process and makes the flavor fade.

best test for a great tomato is not color but aroma. Smell the stem end, and you should smell a strong sweet-acidic fragrance. Choose tomatoes that are plump, shiny and that give slightly when pressure is applied.

Tickets on sale Aug. 16 for UWG’s Florida Georgia Line October concert T he Un iversit y of West Georgia in Ca rrollton has announced that tickets for hit country duo Florida Georgia Line’s concert will go on sale to the general public Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. The concert, part of their Here’s to the Good Times tour and also featuring Colt Ford and Tyler Farr, is scheduled for Oct. 23 at the UWG Coliseum in Carrollton. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased at the Townsend Center box office, online at www. townsendcenter.org, or by calling 678-839-4722. Over the past year, Florida Georgia Line has seen their quadruple platinum debut single “Cruise” dominate Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart at No. 1 for 19 straight weeks, the longest stretch for any song in the past 50 years, and their aptly titled, goldcertified Republic Nashville debut, Here’s to the Good Times, top the Billboard country albums chart. The breakout duo has taken home ACM and CMT awards and scored opening slots for
Taylor Swift and Luke Bryan. This fall, the buzz-worthy newcomers will celebrate with their fans nationwide on their first headline run. Florida Georgia Line has skyrocketed since releasing back-to-back, multi-week No. 1 smashes in the U.S. and Canada with the platinum-certified “Get Your Shine On” and “Cr uise,” which combined with the Top 10-and-climbing (Top 40 Charts) remix featuring Nelly, has sold nearly 5 million downloads. The record–breaking duo, comprised of Tyler Hubbard, from Monroe, Ga., and Brian Kelley from Ormond Beach, Fla., is the first in 21 years to top the country airplay charts with their first two singles, according to Billboard. The ACM New Artist of the Year and New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year winner’s current single, “Round Here,” is Top 20 and rising at country radio. Garnering buzz among fans, media and several superstars across genres – including Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and Ed Sheeran – the newcomers
most recently scored two CMT Music Awards for Duo Video of the Year and Breakthrough Video of the Year, as well as a Teen Choice Awards nomination for Choice Country Group. Colt Ford’s latest album, Declaration of Independence, was released on Colt’s own Average Joes Entertainment and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s top country albums chart. The album included the hit “Back,” a collaboration with Jake Owen. Columbia Nashville artist Tyler Farr has redefined “Redneck Crazy” with the release of his first Top 20 single to country radio. The classically trained vocalist has earned critical acclaim for this hit single, including raves from The New York Times, Music Row, and All Access. Currently still climbing the Mediabase country and Billboard country charts, “Redneck Crazy” also continues to gain traction in the video world, with more than 2 million views for the song’s video.

Jere’s Cyclecraft celebrates 40 years of service
The PC dictionary “You’re talking to yourself again,” the Little Black Dress admonished me the other day. “No, I’m not.” “Yes you are,” she replied. “What is it this time?” According to The Dress, I talk to myself when something gets me riled up. I mentioned something about political correctness and words mean what they mean and we can’t just change them to appease some PC hippy and … “Is this Alaska again?” she asked with a knowing look. Okay it was. While in Alaska my news staff said there was a rather heated debate over the term “fisherman.” Turns out a lot of women fished commercially — and for leisure — and a subset of them wanted our newspaper to start referring to them as “fisherwomen.” A nd ye t a not her g roup wanted to go all equality on us and demanded we start calling everyone who fished as “fisherpeople” or even better, “fishers.” I remember looking at my editor with this incredulous stare and asking, “Are you friggin kidding?” Apparently not. Being a somewhat mischievous sort, I said we’d just call everyone “people who fish” so no one would be happy, because I was of the opinion we had bigger fish to fry. And I swore I was done with the whole
JOHN WINTERS
PC thing. Yeah. So I’m reading something online the other day and hit this story coming out of Seattle. Seems city officials are being asked to avoid using the terms “brown bag” and “citizen” because some may find them offensive. Huh? According to various media who reported on this, city officials said a brown bag was used to determine if a person’s skin color was light enough to allow admission to an event and the phrase bothered some in the A frica nAmerican community. Being journalists, the media up there checked around and couldn’t find anyone who associated brown bag with that scenario. I couldn’t either, asking around here. I used to carry a brown bag. My mom put my lunch in it. And the LBD has even used brown bags packing my own lunch now. A nd t he whole “citizen” thing was because not everyone in Seattle is a citizen — as
in American — so we should refer to everyone as residents. This is the same city that changed “manhole covers” to personal access units.” Shoot me now. This got me thinking about how governmental types are constantly changing words to ensure no one is offended, which, of course, offends me to no end. Ethnic cleansing replaces murder; illegal aliens are now undocumented immigrants; blackboard, if you can even find one, are now chalkboards; those getting a sex change are actually undergoing gender reassignment; people we used to call ugly are now visually challenged; foreign food is now ethnic cuisine; and garbage men (women) are now sanitation engineers. We no longer have secretaries, but administrative assistants. Bums are homeless or displaced persons. Natural disasters are unnatural events caused by man’s destruction of the environment, swamps are wetlands, midgets are vertically challenged, janitor is custodian artist, and a ghetto is an economically-disadvantaged area. And housewives are domestic goddesses. I’m actually okay with that last one. Enoug h a l ready. Let t he debate over an airplane’s “black box” commence.
The blame game Decades before Tyler Perry slipped on a dress to play Madea in “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” comedian Flip Wilson created a sassy, brassy female character named Geraldine Jones. Geraldine had a boyfriend named Killer and more attitude than a roller derby diva. Geraldine was constantly coloring outside the lines, but insisted she was never to blame for her antics. Audiences roared when Geraldine raised an eyebrow, cocked a hip, and said, “The devil made me do it.” Don’t be surprised if you hear that line soon on the West Coast. Satan is the only excuse San Diego Mayor Bob Filner hasn’t used to explain his disgusting deeds. So far, 10 women who worked with or for the 70-year-old Filner have filed sexual harassment charges claiming that when he wasn’t “romancing” them with raunchy language, Filner groped them, kissed them and told them he wanted to see them naked. He even suggested that one woman work without wearing panties. The women took offense. Then they took Filner to court. When the first accusations of sexual misconduct became pu bl ic , Fi l n e r de n ie d a l l charges and refused to resign as mayor. As more women came forward, Filner said, “I may have made a mistake.” A mistake? Sorry, Bob, but passing gas at church is a mistake. Groping the girls at work is a crime. Filner finally announced he

appreciation of that talent, a coveted measure of success at Apollo's Amateur Night. It is indeed this young lady's destiny, as her name reflects, to touch the world with her voice. Building upon her foundation of gospel music from an early age, and branching out into R&B and pop music, this rising star has already reached a landmark in what promises to be a rewarding career in music.

would “take a two-week hiatus for intensive counseling.” That worked so well even the Democratic Party of San Diego called on Filner to resign. At that point Filner rolled out what may be the lamest excuse ever for political sleaze —and that’s saying a lot. Jaws dropped from sea to shining sea when Filner’s attorney, Harvey Berger, said Filner couldn’t help treating ladies like tramps because he never received mandatory sexual harassment training ... from the government. Satan must be smiling. “There is very, very good reason for mandatory sexual harassment training,” Berger said. “If nothing else, it makes people think about the subject and how they interact with fellow employees.” Right. Berger also said since the city of San Diego failed to teach Filner manners, it should pay his legal bills as he defends the suits. I n c a s e you’re wondering where Filner got the idea that it was OK to treat female employees like pole dancers, here’s a clue. Before becoming Mayor of San Diego, Freaky Filner served for 19 years in
the United States House of Representatives. Two decades in D.C. taught Filner he was entitled to special treatment. And like most politicians, he got every favor he requested, from everyone he asked. By the time the women on his San Diego staff revolted, Filner needed a translator to tell him what “NO” meant. Here’s what normal people want to know: how did this piece of human sewage miss the memo that “Leave Your Panties at Home Day” was not a good workplace initiative? How could he think kissing or fondling a woman against her will was acceptable? Didn’t Filner have a mother? Preacher? Rabbi? Sister? Sure he did. But why blame your shortcomings on a person when a faceless institution is available. We’ve all heard that “a government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.” Filner now claims that the shoulders of big government are also broad enough to take the blame for everything you do. K now what? A jur y may ag ree w it h h i m . Person a l responsibility is about as fashionable these days as a Klan rally. And about as common. Geraldine Jones blamed the devil for her misbehavior. Bob Filner blames big government. Makes you wonder if there’s much of a difference any more.

hen Jere Hall opened up his doors in 1973, he did so out of necessity. What began as a part-time hobby soon turned into a fulltime profession. “One day it was like — dang. This is a business now,” Jere laughs. Back in those days there weren’t a whole lot of motorcycles. Most towns didn’t really want motorcycle business — or motorcycle people for that matter. “It was almost as bad as having a pool hall or something,” chuckled Jere. There were a few places in Atlanta where cyclists could go for repairs, but they were all dealerships. Jere’s smalltown operation was unique and his business model has stood the test of time. Forty years later, Jere’s Cyclecraft in Moreland has maintained a level of flexibility in terms of what his operation can offer each individual. W hen Jere’s Cyclecraft started out in 1973, the main focus was on repair, custom bikes and paintwork. Later, the company shifted attention into stocking more parts and expanding the showroom, in order to allow customers to see the products. One of the most interesting aspects of Cyclecraft is that the shop goes above and beyond. Jere’s operation transcends the general cosmetic and vanity-based customization of motorcycles into a far more personal and human approach. When asked about some of his proudest customizations, Jere recalls a customer who had a prosthetic left leg. “He could down shift okay, but it was hard to upshift. We rigged it up with an electric shifter like on a drag race bike so he only had to put the bike in gear initially, and then he could push a button anytime he wanted to shift up or down,” Jere said.
On a separate occasion, a man with a disabled right leg was served in the shop. “We had to build a special brake pedal because he couldn’t lift his leg enough to move forward to the pedal. So we built one that he could reach.” Jere also makes a point to mention the women who tend to be shorter and not quite as strong. “We understand their needs and help them the best we can. A lot of shops don’t give women much respect a nd sometimes take advantage of women. That’s just not cool.” Jere and Pamela could not have continued on without the understanding and goodwill of their neighbors who have supported the business along the way. A prime example of this goodwill is the kind, 86-yearold neighbor who lives just across the street from the shop. “ D u r i n g o u r c u s to m e r appreciation day, Miss Anne lets our guests park in her yard but we always have a rocking chair set out for her,” smiles Jere. Has he experienced any trends in operating a motorcycle shop? “Constantly” he says. “The only constant is change.” “ T he c u s tom c hopp er revival of only a few years ago seems to be waning and the roots of that were laid in the 1960s and ‘70s,” he said. “Now, the full dresser touring bikes

are the big thing and that’s been done before as well.” With such a small operation, it is much easier to navigate through the changes. When the custom bikes were popula r, Jere’s shop catered to the custom bikes and parts. Later, when the trend began dying away, the shop moved toward the more mechanical side of things. “It’s like when the shoe repairman does better than the g uy who sells shoes,” expresses Pamela. “And we have been around long enough to see trends coming.” Flexibility, low overhead and 40 years of experience, has ensured success thus far and will likely continue for years to come. When presented with the subject of the future regarding the business, Jere adheres to the same philosophy which has brought him this far: taking life as it comes, one day at a time. It seems that there is no real desire to stop now, though. “My nephew Jamie (Scott) has been working with us since he was 12 years old and he’s 36 now. When we decide that we’ve had enough, if he wants it, then it’s all his.” Despite the countless challenges that a small business owner can face for over 40 years, a flexible business philosophy and sensible approach to change seems to be the key to longevity for Jere’s Cyclecraft.

Church group answers call to aid cancer patient, mother of two By Bradley Hartsell bradley@newnan.com
As Jessica Newsome battles for her life, The Grove rallies around her to help in any way possible. The Grove is Newnan First United Methodist Church’s aid committee for medical crises and long-term illness, which started soon after Newsome was diagnosed in March with kidney cancer while serving as the church’s children’s minister. Newsome su ffered from exhaustion almost immediately after taking the job in July 2012. She fought off symptoms of fatigue for months until her husband, Jason, finally put her in a car and drove her to the emergency room. The news was heartbreaking. Jessica had stage 4 renal cell cancer. Word of Jessica’s illness shook the church and spurred a group effort in coordinating the massive outpouring of assistance church and community members wished to send the Newsomes’ way. The Grove immediately became the facilitator for funds and assistance to reach the church families in need, just like the Newsomes. This past month, The Grove renovated t he Newsomes’
bathroom to make it wheelchair accessible. The group a l so b oug ht t he fa m i ly a recliner to make visitors more comfortable. One of Newsome’s wishes was to attend a Braves game. When she got there, word of her illness spread all the way to pitcher Tim Hudson and his wife. His Hudson Family Foundation has since provided a grant to the Newsome family, with Hudson also donating autographed items to The Grove, which will be used to raise money for the family. Those who know Newsome f ind her amazingly strongspirited, giving and an overa c h ie ve r. Ne w s om e , w h o recently turned 30, continues to battle advanced stages of cancer with the support of her husband and her two little girls, along with friends and family. “Jessica is the true definition of a mother,” says Sarah Dewberry, who helped start The Grove and has been friends with Jessica since college. “She is selfless, caring, warm and nurturing to everyone she meets. She has always shown an interest in the people around her, and even through her personal struggles, she finds ways to minister to those she cares
about. The world should wish to have her as a friend.” The family started a blog titled getbetterjess.blogspot. com in order to update loved ones and concerned community members on Newsome’s journey. The blog includes posts from Newsome. The pages a re f i l led w it h lovi ng t houghts a nd fa m i ly photographs. Along with supporting Jessica, The Grove is assisting about a dozen other families dealing with medical crises. If a family needs a wheelchair ramp, online meal calendar, or monetary support, The Grove always donates a planted seedling tree as a symbol of its love and support. For Kelley Welden, another one of The Grove’s founders, the ministry is a blessing for those involved. “It is a joy to work with other women who truly care about our church members. The people that we have helped have been so appreciative, whether it’s been meals, prayer shawls or the dogwood trees. We are just happy to be able to do our part.” Si nce T he G rove ’s conception, community support has been overwhelming for Jessica and her family as they

School’s out for Yeager Longtime educator reflects on career as new year begins By Celia Shortt celia@newnan.com
School years are full of new beginnings, and none is more new this school year than Beverly Yeager’s. After serving as principal of Moreland Elementary for 25 years, with 33 years of service in the Coweta County School System, Yeager has retired. For the first time in a long time, she will not being starting this school year as principal. “A great characteristic of a career in education is that each school year is a new beginning, renewed energy, and new goals” she said. “I like to think about retirement the same way. New chapter, new year, new opportunities, new experiences. Time to renew and reinvent.” Throughout her 33 yea rs working in the school district, Yeager saw many transitions. She fondly remembers working with six different superintendents, many different teachers and thousands of students. She also remembers the transition to the digital age and how it impacted education for students. Most importantly, Yeager remembers the sense of community at Moreland. “ We ra ised ou r ch i ld ren together,” she said. “Mike and my own children, Kirby and Weston, attended Moreland. I’ve known families and their extended families for decades. There was a strong sense of partnership and mutual love, ca re, a nd concer n for one another.” Yeager bega n her teach-
ing career in 1980 when she taught marketing education at Newnan High School and East Coweta High School. She taught for five years and then served as an assistant principal at Newnan High School for three years. In the fall of 1988 at the age of 29, she became principal of Moreland Elementary. She and her husband, Mike Yeager, Coweta’s sheriff, have lived in and been an active part of the Moreland community throughout that time. In her educational career, Yeager has helped guide the educational foundation of not only thousands of students, but a lso m a ny sta ff members, colleagues, friends, and members of the community. “I was a brand new teacher when I started at Moreland Elementary school in 1988,” said Leigh Munson, now principal at Eastside Elementary. “I spent eight years as assistant principal under Beverly. We spent 21 years together. She is an impeccable leader and was the guiding force behind that entire team.” Munson never thought she shou ld be a pri ncipa l. She credits Yeager with guiding her into that career. “Beverly is the one who came behind me, supported me and challenged me to try something new,” she said. “She mentored me as an administrator. It helped me prepare for what I would face in life. “My goal in life is to be as good of a leader as she was to us,” she added.

Beverly Yeager served as the principal of Moreland Elementary School for 25 years, with a total of 33 years working in the Coweta County School District.
Melanie Perry, the new principal at Moreland Elementary, was a student at Newnan High School while Yeager was assistant principal there and worked with her for 14 years at Moreland Elementary. “She’s been a great role model for me for a very long time,” Perry said. “I could not have asked for a better mentor who is so near and dear to the community and the school.” Perry started at Moreland Elementary as a permanent sub, and in time became a full time teacher and then an instructional coach. Two years ago, she became the assistant principal. She applied for the principal job after Yeager retired. “She taught us to keep a sense of humor and to always keep things real and be comfortable — laughing at yourself even when it is hard,” said Perry. “You couldn’t ask for a better rounded person who was committed to tradition, but kept us abreast of the current educational trends. “They’re big shoes to fill, but I’m dedicated to fill them and make her proud,” she added. Director of Curriculum for Coweta County Karen Barker refers to Yeager as “master in our profession.” Yeager “was always on that innovative edge, reinventing herself and the school,” said Barker. “She was always willing to try new things, always a team player and served as
a mentor for me and so many others.” Even as she was reinventing herself and the school, Yeager was still focused on one thing — “We’re about people, not programs.” “Beverly taught me that we are about people,” said Perry. “We are not about programs. Our kids come first. If you base your decision on what will help the most kids, it will be the right one every time.” Coweta County School System Superintendent Dr. Steve Barker believes that Yeager’s career and time serving in Coweta County schools have made a real impact on the school district. “Beverly is one of those who does not come along very often — her level of experience, her love of seeing other people, her relentless work, her sound judgement,” he said. “Trust is probably the most critical component of school leadership. She

is a perfect example of someone who everyone trusted. “The Yeagers are good folks and mean a lot to the community,” he added. Yeager may not work for the school system or Moreland Elementary anymore, but her legacy will be there and throughout the Coweta County school district for a long time. “Her legacy did not go away,” said Karen Barker. “When you can step out and leave a legacy that we are still learning from, it is a powerful thing.” This career could be overwhelming to some, but Yeager has taken it in stride. She does not focus on it being over, but instead is thankful for the experiences and relationships she made.
“Moreland Elementary is truly a community school, and I’ve been blessed to work with so many delightful students and families, and an amazing staff and community,” she said. “In reflection, I hope I led with a vision, passion, compassion, and a sense of humor. It’s been a great journey. I have loved every minute of it. Now, I’m eager to chart a new course. I know there is a second chapter coming.”
