‘The Walking Dead’ spreads new life Vertical integration and word of mouth net big results

When AMC TV show “The Walking Dead” began filming its pilot episode in late spring of 2010, no one really knew what kind of impact the show would have. Fast-forward three years. In the world of popular culture, the verdict is clear — it’s a smash hit phenomenon with no signs of waning interest. In the world of local business the results are overwhelmingly promising as well. Especially because much of the filming has been or will be done in Senoia and other parts of Coweta County. “Walking Dead” tours have certainly had a positive financial impact in terms of downtown Senoia’s local retailers. Business in town are benefiting from the tour groups that come to visit the various landmarks from the show. The show and filming are certainly a hit with local businesses. Many are grateful recipients of the “vertical integration” business model that Senoia’s Raleigh Studios employs. Several local business owners can attest to the positive financial impacts the show has on their enterprises. As owner of both Nickell Rental equipment firm and Saturn Security Systems,

Josh Nickell is quick to point out the impact the show has for not only his business, but for the community as well. “If you include the direct and indirect revenue from the production, the impact has been huge,” Nickell said. “Senoia is one of our largest markets. The production’s support of the downtown market and improvement in home values (because of the name recognition of the town) has had a dramatic impact on our revenue. These changes have also allowed us to bring on additional employees in order to keep up with the demand of commercial and residential systems,” he said. While the single production of “The Walking Dead” has not resulted in an influx of direct revenue for Nickell, there is no denying the impact of the vitality it has had on the region. Nickell and his father were alerted to the potential for a tax incentive for movie productions before it was passed by Georgia’s legislature. His father had worked at other rental companies in states where productions had come to town and had witnessed firsthand the positive impact it had on the local economy. Father and son knew it would be a huge benefit for local businesses and pushed hard for the incentives package. “We called representatives and spread the word to other local small business

owners to push for the incentives passage. In addition, the husband of a friend from high school actually helped draft the legislation,” Nickell elaborated. “Even though they have not spent a lot of money with us directly, they have spent money locally, which has grown tourism in Senoia, increased property values, and supported restaurants and shopping.” Many of these businesses and homeowners are Saturn’s customers. The improved local economy allows them the opportu-

nity to complete renovations and expansions, which directly impact their business. When Saturn Security Systems ran into a cabling issue at Raleigh Studios that required the assistance of an IT company, Nickell called on Doug Bates, president of CMIT Solutions. CMIT Solutions is a local IT support and services company which provides direct IT support for Raleigh

Contrell Middlebrooks has been a teacher at Eastside Elementary School for 17 years, but this summer she traveled to Africa to participate in something completely new. Middlebrooks was one of 10 teachers and two administrators who were awarded the FulbrightHays Grant, through Mercer University, to support research in Malawi.

“It wa s a m a zi ng,” she sa id . “Malawi is called the warm heart of A frica . I felt so welcomed there.” While in Malawi, Middlebrooks and the other participants studied the impact of ecology and environment on the culture and history of Malawi and worked with Malawian teachers to develop a relationship with which to help the educational system there as well as back home. “ I wa s i mpre s sed w it h t he school system,” she said. “I was

amazed at some of the similarities. It is similar to the system here in the way of standards and classroom practices.” Middlebrooks was impressed by the teacher-to-student ratios, however. She reported that it could be anywhere from one teacher to 100 students to one teacher to 400 students. In addition to those large class sizes, Malawi’s schools a re a l so po or a nd somewh at

They need to be able to eat it in 20 minutes or less. They need to be able to open and close all of the containers themselves. And it can’t go bad before they eat it. What are we talking about? The lunch your kids take to school each day. What you put in your child’s lunchbox might matter more than you realize. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found a significant amount of sodium in the foods toddlers commonly eat. It’s feared that similar levels of sodium are also found in a number of the foods older kids eat at school every day. As concerns rise about the early onset of high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease, parents may want to re-examine those lunchbox choices. Why does sodium matter? A 2012 study of children and adolescents found that higher sodium consumption was associated with increased blood pressure. This effect was even greater in over weight and obese participants compared to normal weight participants. In addition, research suggests that children’s taste for salt develops as they are exposed to it. The less sodium children consume, the less they want it. Children’s taste for salt may be reduced if they are exposed to lower

sodium diets at a young age. Eating less sodium can help lower blood pressure during childhood, which can help lower the risk of high blood pressure as an adult.

What’s a parent to do? Here are some tips to help tackle high sodium in your child’s lunchbox: n Read food labels and compare the sodium amount in different products, then choose the options with the lowest amounts of sodium. Some varieties of bread can vary from 80 to 230 mg of sodium per slice. That can make a big difference in lunchtime sandwiches. n Pack fresh fruits and vegetables with lunch every day, like a small bag of baby carrots, snow peas, or grape tomatoes. n For a healthy snack, make trail mix using unsalted nuts, dried fruits and whole grain cereal. n When buying prepared meals, look for those with less than 600mg of sodium per serving. By packing a lower sodium school lunch for your children, you are not only setting them up for success in the classroom, but also in life. With your help, your children can develop healthy, low sodium eating habits that will last throughout their lives and help improve their heart health.

Local chef, instructor leads by example, inspires confidence By Bradley Hartsell bradley@newnan.com

here is no crying in Chef Vera’s kitchen. That is what Chef Tricia Vera told her West Georgia Technical College students in March of 2012, when she informed them of her breast cancer diagnosis. In fact, one student couldn’t hold back the tears and Vera sent her away. If that seems stern, it is because Chef Vera is serious about WGTC’s Central Educational Center culinary program. She has to be tough. Under Chef Vera’s direction, WGTC has turned into a Coweta cooking powerhouse, winning both “Best Of” and “Best Booth” awards for three consecutive Taste of Newnan events. The bi-annual Taste of Newnan invites every restaurant in the area to compete, and many businesses are drawn to the event. In recent years a bunch of dual-enrollment students have been outdueling them all and taking the awards. Perhaps the victories are because of Chef Vera’s expectations for success and unending determination. Vera is the type of instructor who will not allow her students to cry in the face of difficult news. She demands professionalism and the very best of her students. This way, Vera hopes that when her students graduate the program, they will be able to walk into any restaurant and thrive. And many of Vera’s students have already. Vera came to Newnan in 2001 after her sister and brother-in-law moved to the area for work. Traditional Hispanic culture dictates families move together, so Vera and her two daughters followed suit. Vera left the ritz of Miami for small-town life in Newnan. Armed with more than 15 years

of culinary experience in luxury hotels, restaurants and country clubs, including working as the executive pastry chef at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Vera secured an adjunct position with WGTC in culinary arts. That was seven years ago. When former department head Chef Amy Chaffin became ill and had to step down, Vera filled the position and continued WGTC’s path to serious culinary mastery. Vera’s students don’t simply fry burgers and whip up instant mashed potatoes like other culinary programs. Vera has her students focus instead on everything from prep work to plate presentation. She expects them to design and inform every aspect of their Taste of Newnan booth, from menu to decorations. Vera both deeply cares about her students and empowers them with the freedom to “play with their food” and be creative. In WGTC’s culinary arts program, the work is taken seriously, but the work is beloved.

The continued success of the program gives the students a sense of pride and strengthens their connection with Chef Vera. “Go big or go home. I don’t accept anything less than that. They have to put 150 percent into everything they do,” says Vera of her standards within the program. “The students know they’re not just representing the college, they represent me and they know I don’t accept anything less.” “It’s the competitive nature in all of us that we have to win.” Vera notes. July 14 marked a big win for

Vera: one year breast cancer-free. As she awaits one final surgery scheduled for Labor Day weekend, Vera stays dedicated as an instructor, overseeing the intense preparation for Taste of Newnan on Oct. 3. After landing on the winning combination of chicken ‘n waffles last year, Vera and her students promise a “big surprise” for the upcoming event and are hoping to make it four straight wins. Vera says winning the competition is a huge point of pride for students who participate because of their control from start to finish.

It makes them feel like they built something and succeeded, and students appreciate that feeling along with the guidance Vera provides them. As a result of WGTC’s fostered community and team mentality, bonds built in the classroom and at events go beyond competition plaques and awards. Chef Vera insists “culinary is a lifelong family,” not only to current students but also for those who have graduated. Through social media, many graduates have heard about Vera’s diagnosis and continue to reach

out to her as she recovers from her battle. Though she always remains measured and professional, one can see the pride shining through Vera, including the knowledge that the program cultivates so many rewarding relationships. As she prepares for the upcoming semester, Chef Vera takes comfort in the foundation of her program, the passion of her students and a healthy body. “When someone asks me how I’m doing, I always say, ‘Great. I woke up today and I didn’t have cancer.’”

primitive. Some classes meet outside with only a chalkboard. Even with the large classroom sizes and primitive conditions, Middlebrooks was encouraged. “Even with that size, the students were eager to learn, and learning took place,” she said. “The teachers are dedicated, but paid so little. The schools have very poor conditions — lack of books, no desks — yet, they were hungry to learn. They were just so eager.” Another goal of this project was to create an ongoing, online resource for collaborative educational opportunities in both countries in order to engage in cross-cultural learning. To help achieve that goal, each participant, including Middlebrooks, selected a Malawian educator to be their Malawian Collaborative Teacher for the 2013-14 school year. Middlebrooks’ partner was Jessie Chisale, a thirdgrade teacher at St. Joseph Primary School in Zomba. After determining the best way to communicate, then setting up email addresses for their partners, Middlebrooks and her colleagues decided to help with the English Language Arts and Math curriculum content, because students

would soon start learning English. The process was slow. Despite the majority of the teachers having taught more than 15 years, few had knowledge of current technology. One teacher mentioned it was the first time she had touched a laptop. Within a week of setting up an email account for Jessie, Middlebrooks received emails from her distant partner and was able to continue the work that began in Malawi. Since returning to the United States, the two are still in contact, collaborating on their respective classes and curriculums. “I experienced education without borders,” Middlebrooks said. “We cannot be limited in our thinking of education in the United States alone. We need to expand our efforts to the world.” “I’m so thankful for the Fulbright Scholarship and Senator William Fulbright. I’m thankful we have something in place by the U.S. Department of Education in order to know that, now, education

is global.” “I want to thank my principal for supporting me in this opportunity,” she added. “It was such a great need. I plan to go back next summer as a guest teacher.” Another activity Middlebrooks participated in was the distribution of school supplies to many schools throughout Malawi. The schools are in constant need of pencils, ink pens, chalk, crayons, pencil sharpeners (manual/electric), composition notebooks, and refurbished laptops. Middlebrooks continues to collect school supplies to send to Malawi. If interested in donating, please send all items to Eastside Elementary School. During the last two years, CMIT Solutions has cultivated a relationship with Raleigh Studios — assisting in many areas including developing a secure Wi-Fi system to cover the entire studio and increase the studio’s bandwidth to suit the special effects department, which recently moved from L.A. to the local studios. Since the beginning of their relationship with the studio, Bates has found his company taking on new clients that reside within the realm of entertainment production. Those new clients included an ABC studio in Atlanta and a movie studio in Hiram. Vertical integration at work. Scott Young and his wife, Teresa, were running Cutie Pies & Cakery when their relationship with the Raleigh Studios began. When “The Walking Dead” was in town filming, people from the studio began buying cupcakes from the local shop, which quickly turned into the purchasing of large cakes as well. Soon, Scott and Teresa were meeting with the show’s onstaff caterers, which in turn, led them to agreeing to make desserts for the cast and crew daily. The couple also started creating custom cakes. “We’ve done Chandler Riggs’ birthday cake the past two years as well as Andrew Lincoln’s birthday cake last year,” Young said. Word of the local shop’s

So down time simply can’t happen. When you’re on a set like that, you can’t make mistakes. You have to provide a high quality product. If you can take care of them, they can take care of you,” he said.

They call in Rhonda Sue Pattishall. Pattishall refers to herself as the garbage and recycling guru and she discovered early on that she had a peculiar passion for waste and recycling. “There’s an art to everything, and it’s fascinating what recyclable materials can be turned into,” Pattishall said. “Almost 80 percent of everyday garbage can be recycled — even something as minute as a Hershey’s Kiss wrapper.” Now in her current Business Development role at Integrated Waste Systems, her relationship with Raleigh Studios, formerly Riverwood studios, developed around

Runners of all shapes and sizes will have the chance to race through the historic side of New n a n on L abor Day weekend. On Aug. 31 , Ma i n St reet Newnan will host the Sunrise on the Square Road Race, a n a n nu a l f ive k i lom e te r race through the GreenvilleLaGrange Historic District. The race will start at 8 a.m. “It’s a great chance for everyone to come into downtown and have fun with it,” said Newnan Business Development Director Hasco Craver IV. The race will begin at the P ied mont New na n Fit ness Center on West Court Square at West Broad and will travel down LaGrange Street to the area of Newnan High School. Runners will then turn around and travel back up LaGrange Street and make a right onto Alpine Drive, following it onto Woodbine Drive. “They will run the big hilly loop,” Craver said. “It is picturesque, shaded and covered in trees, but it is some very hilly terrain. It is a great way to show off the community.” The LaGrange Street area

i s pa r t of t he Greenv i l le LaGrange Historic District, one of several historic district listings in Newnan on the National Register of Historic Places. After conquering Newnan’s version of heartbreak hill (the infamous hill in the Peachtree Road Race), runners will turn back onto LaGrange Street toward downtown. Runners will then switch over to Greenville Street on Salbide Avenue and continue into downtown, where the finish line waits near the Morgan Jewelers store on North Court Square. A water station will be provided at the halfway point of the 3.1-mile run, and there will be water waiting at the finish line. A full view of the race’s route can be seen on mapmyrun.com. The race is sponsored by Mike Fitzpatrick Ford, and times will be recorded by Pacesetter’s PR, a sanctioned race management company from Atlanta. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in the individual men’s and women’s age groups. Local and non-local runners, walkers or skippers of all ages are invited to participate in the 5K, Craver said, and there are

two shorter races for participants who might not be able to run more than three miles. Before the race begins, runners can loop around the square in the 1 Mile Fun Run at 7:45 a.m. and after the race, around 8:45 a.m., younger r un ners ca n sprint their energy off in the Tot Trot. Early registration is open until Aug. 23 and will cost $20. Afterwards, up to the morning of the race, participants can register for $25. Registration
