NHS art show at Centre through mid-December Sculpture, pottery, drawing and paintings on exhibit
By MAGGIE BOWERS maggie@newnan.com
Newnan High School, located at 190 LaGrange St., offers an art club in addition to the school’s curriculum. Students in the club are encouraged to create strong works in various mediums, and are guided through the process of entering those works in local, state-wide and national contests and exhibits. Each year, the Newnan High School Art Club and art class participants offer an art show to the county, giving club members the opportunity to display the works created in a gallery environment. The 2015 Fall Art Exhibit was recently installed in the lobby of The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Newnan, and an opening reception was held to welcome the community on Nov. 16. The exhibit will remain on display at 1523 Lower Fayetteville Road through mid-December. “We just love for the kids to have an opportunity to exhibit their work,” said NHS art instructor Jode Hobbs. The exhibit features work from students enrolled in several art classes currently offered at the local high school, including Photography, AP Drawing, Drawing I and II, Pottery and Visual Arts. Students include works from varying disciplines in both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional pieces. Allie Buchanan, an AP Drawing student, is currently a senior at NHS and plans to attend LaGrange College after graduation, intending to focus her college studies on fine arts. This is Buchanan’s first time participating in the group exhibit. Sophomore students Jaila Robinson and Jasmyne Patrick are enrolled in the Drawing I class at NHS and worked together to created and combined self-portrait called “Sisterhood.” The two explained they thought it would be easier to take one simple picture and then cut it in half. Of the show, Patrick said she enjoyed “seeing people walking past and looking.” “I think seeing all the art and the different creative processes is my favorite part,” Patrick added. “It’s inspiring.” Art instructor Heather Jennings was also present at the Fall Art Exhibit reception last week. Jennings explained that having “the opportunity to brag on my students” is rewarding as an art teacher. “[The students] are fantastic and their hard work has paid off,” Jennings added. “The show also exposes other students to the additional art classes available to them.”
