Eight local youth have received guitars — and lessons — from the Newnan Police Department through the Guitars Not Guns program.

Guitars Not Guns was started in Califor-

nia in 2000 by retired musician Ray Nelson and his wife, Lulie, and works with youth to help them appreciate the power of music. There are currently 15 chapters in 12 states. The Nelsons now live in Peachtree City.

Bowled over Christmas was great, but Christmas is over. Now it’s time to deal with The Aftermath.

That means tossing out used wrapping paper, putting the fruit cake back in the pantry for another year and slogging back to the stores or connecting with online retailers to exchange gifts or beg for refunds.

Ho, ho, ho.

Women may dawdle, but men tackle these tasks at warp speed. Mostly so they can start preparing for a guy’s real favorite season— football bowl season.

It’s not easy. Just because there aren’t presents to be wrapped, gifts to be delivered, cookies to be baked or carols to be sung doesn’t mean that serious preparation isn’t required.

Women start shopping for Christmas on Labor Day. Guys have less than a week to get ready for bowl games.

Or at least for the bowl games that count.

Minor struggles like the Potato Bowl, Poinsettia Bowl, Quick Lane Bowl and Foster Farms Bowl, will help fill some TV time, but the important games start on New Year’s Eve day.

Bowl game prep will test any man’s patience and skills. Failure will get your man card canceled. If you’re a rookie, these tips might save the day…

• First, create a huge poster showing the dates and times of all bowl games. The

poster should include team logos, game locations, time zones and the correct TV channel.

• Location, location, location. The poster must be duct-taped to a wall that is clearly visible from any spot in your TV Command Center, aka the couch or recliner.

• The Command Center and TV set must be properly aligned. Men who are able to “borrow” extra sets from other family members should do so. This makes viewing more enjoyable for guys, which makes them less annoying to everyone else.

• The remote control is crucial. Especially if viewing multiple TVs, which may require changing channels on different remotes. If you’re not proficient, get a new universal remote. For best results, hire a twelveyear-old video game whiz as your designated channel changer. Most will work for free pizza.

• Make sure to adjust your TV’s picture settings until team uniform colors display

perfectly. I heard a story about a man from Loachapoka, Alabama, who shot his new 60” Samsung smart TV when his beloved Crimson Tide’s jerseys appeared to be shocking pink.

• Remember to service the small generator that runs the TV if the power goes out. It also helps if you prerecord complaint calls to the Cable TV company in case you lose reception at a crucial moment.

• Get some snacks. There is only one rule about bowl game food: it can’t be healthy. Chips, cheese and dips are required. So is gluten. (Sorry.) If you start to drag while viewing, don’t worry. Beanie-Weenies provide enough protein to keep you going strong for hours.

• Finally, make sure to exercise, drink plenty of fluids and rest before the games begin. Perform neck stretching and rotation exercises to make sure you won’t suffer a whiplash injury jerking your head from one TV to another to catch the instant replay of a touchdown you missed while you were watching a

Officer Ed Lee said that they had looked for a guitar instructor to volunteer but couldn’t find one. So Atwood and Grant, who both play guitar themselves, volunteered to teach.

Newnan Police Chief Douglas “Buster” Meadows told the students and their parents that, at the end of the second eight-week class, the police department is going to arrange to have them perform at the Wadsworth Auditorium.

“Music gives people an outlet for their feelings a lot of times,” Meadows said.

“We hope y’all will find this is a good thing for you to express your feelings.”

Fol low i ng t he Coweta Cou nt y Com m issioners’ recent decision to go with the “rollback” millage rate, county staff has revised the proposed budget, making $3.3 million in cuts. County sta ff had proposed a n increase in the property tax millage rate. The rollback rate is a decrease in the rate; however, the rollback rate brings in the same amount of revenue as last year’s rate, because of an increase in property values.

The original proposed budget was $72 , 56 4, 576 , and the revised proposal is $69,258,236.

However, the budget is a “working document,” and county staffers were still working Wednesday on possible changes.

“This is an activity that many parents and students had asked about in the past,” Dye added. “I was very excited and supportive of Mrs. Reaves and Mrs. Wunderle coming to me wanting to start a JPES running club. It all took shape so quickly and within two weeks, we had our running club. It is also wonderful to see so many other teachers participating in other capacities with the running club.”

JPES starts running club ‘Staying Healthy One Step at a Time!’

Jefferson Parkway Elementary School started something completely new for them this year – a running club.

“JPES has never had a running club,” said JPES third grade teacher Dayna Wunderle. “We noticed that we have several after school activities that involved academics and community service, but we didn’t have anything that had a focus on physical activity.”

Wunderle, fellow teacher Heather Reaves, and JPES Principal Sean Dye decided to start the club and 70 kids signed up.

“We knew that the kids were excited and eager to meet goals in the running club,” Wunderle said.

The club meets every Thursday from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the parking lot behind the school. Students have a goal for the week and are divided into groups with each being led by a teacher.

“As they complete laps they collect popsicle sticks,” said Wunderle.

“The number of popsicle sticks they collect represents the laps they completed. We record their — Heather Reaves laps in our spreadsheet.

They are working toward goals: 10k run, half marathon, and full marathon by the end of the year.”

In addition to these distance goals, the purpose of the JPES running club is its motto: “Staying Healthy One Step at a Time!”

“We wanted the children to have an extracurricular activity that focused on healthy activities that could become life-long habits,” said Wunderle. “We thought that it would open up opportunities for some of our students to participate on their middle or even high school track teams. We have all of our running club members set their own personal goals, and we are challenging them to meet and possibly surpass those goals.”

Reaves and Dye are also pleased with the running club.

“It’s great to see how they work together to encourage one another.”

Celebrating 150 years

The newspaper is holding an open house today from 2-4 p.m. and inviting the community to see the inner workings of the newspaper. A magazine celebrating the history of the newspaper – and the county – is making its debut today, as well.

“This is an exciting time not only for the Times-Herald, but also for Newnan and Coweta County,” said Publisher John A. Winters.

“Today, we celebrate not only

the history of our newspaper over the past 150 years, but that of our county as well.”

The Newnan City Council, the Coweta County Commission and the Georgia House of Representatives have all passed resolutions honoring the newspaper on its milestone birthday. The first issue of The Newnan Herald, the first newspaper started in Georgia after the Civil War, was read by Cowetans on Sept. 9, 1865.

The Newnan Times-Herald has the longest continuous history of any Coweta County business.

The 180-page magazine cel-

ebrating the Times-Herald’s sesquicentennial includes chapters on each decade of t h e n e w s pap er ’s h i s tory. There are features on the Thomasson family, who founded The Newnan Times in 1936, and on famous newsroom alums Lewis Grizzard and Margaret Anne Barnes.

The magazine profiles the favorite stories of readers, tells the stories of some readers who have subscribed to The Times-Herald for half a century or more, and takes an incisive look at the coverage of race in the local newspaper

The Newnan City Council approved changing its meeting time on Oct. 15 to 6:30 p.m. to accommodate public attendance for the controversial annexation application for Greentop Road.

Originally the meeting was scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

In its meeting on July 21, attorney George Rosen zweig asked the city council, on behalf of the Ellis Estate fa m i ly a nd B a r ron fa mily, to reconsider the previous denial of the annexation request for 169 acres on Greentop Road, which would include 161 residential lots.

Rosenzweig told the council he could address most, if not all, of concerns the public had raised about the proposed project.

Council originally voted against the annexation, which was opposed by a majority of nearby residents who opposed the smaller lot sizes included in the proposal.

Increased traffic from the

additional homes was also cited.

Some of the initial changes Rosenzweig suggested were rezoning the area south of Greentop Road to RS 20 and making the maximum number of lots for the property 150.

The council approved his request with a vote of 5-2, as Newnan Mayor Keith Brady had recused himself from the request because his wife’s family is one of the owners.

Rosenzweig was supposed to present his revised request at the 6:30 p.m. council meeting on Monday, Sept. 21, but during its Aug. 11 meeting the council approved moving it to the Oct. 15 meeting so all council members could attend.

According to a letter to the city council, Rosenzweig said that after meeting with representatives of Newnan Pines, Lake Hills and the Lake Ridge area – subdivisions located near Greentop – there was a

Asparagus Tart

1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed

2 cups Jarlsberg cheese, shredded

1 pound asparagus

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves salt and pepper Heat oven to 400 F. Prepare baking sheet with parchment paper.

Roll out puff pastry into 16-by-10-inch rectangle, trimming uneven edges. Place on baking sheet. With knife, lightly score pastry dough 1 inch from edges to mark rectangle. Using fork, pierce dough inside markings at 1/2-inch intervals. Bake until golden, about 15 minutes.

Remove pastry shell from oven and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Trim asparagus spears to fit crosswise inside pastry shell. Arrange in single layer over cheese, alternating ends and tips. Brush with oil, sprinkle thyme leaves and season with salt and pepper. Bake until spears are tender, about 20 minutes.

Tomato Gratin

8 medium ripe tomatoes 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

4 garlic cloves, sliced

4 sprigs fresh thyme (or 4 basil leaves, chopped) salt and pepper, to taste

2 ounces toasted pine (pignoli) nuts 1/2 pound (8 ounces) grated Jarlsberg cheese Heat oven to 350 F. Cut tomatoes in half.

In bowl, whisk together vinegar, olive oil, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper; gently mix in tomatoes. Transfer to ovenproof dish, turning tomatoes cut side up before baking 15 minutes.

When tomatoes are cool enough, remove skins before returning to baking dish. Sprinkle tomatoes with nuts and cheese. Return to oven and bake about 10 minutes, or until cheese turns golden and bubbly.

Serve as bruschetta on sliced, toasted Italian bread or as a side dish to fish and meat.

QUILTS OF VALOR Continued from page 1 asked Wilson if she knew of any more veterans in need of a quilt.

“I told Mandy I have 75-80 veterans on my list,” Wilson said. “We decided to start with 50, but we weren’t sure we could do that many at one time, so we decided to start the guild. We had our first planning meeting and 18 volunteer sewers at our first sewing day.”

Wilson said the guild hosts “Sew Socials” at the Parish Hall at First United Methodist Church in downtown Newnan on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

“Our volunteers work really hard,” Wilson said.

“They just amaze me because I am not able to sew. They bring their sewing machine and needles and we provide everything else. When they start coming, they keep coming back.

All you have to do is show up.”

Wilson explained that the volunteer sewers are able to sew and make the designs that are on the actual quilts.

Once those are done, the

The next day, Roberts went to Walter Reed Hospital in Delaware and presented a quilt to the chaplain for a veteran. Since this time, the organization has grown to many guilds, or chapters, in the United States.

Kathy Wilson has been with the Coweta guild since it began. She serves as the coordinator for the guild and is responsible for getting the quilt presentations organized and for fundraising.

“I like to send cards out to the veterans each year,” Wilson said. “My friend Mandy Robinson was a volunteer sewer. Both of our husbands are part of the local radio club and she asked if I knew any veterans in the club so she could give them a quilt. There were two WWII veterans at the time.”

recognized, but that was not the case for the Vietnam veterans, so they are very grateful as well.”

Wilson shared a story of a veteran who received a quilt from the guild.

“His wife said after the presentation, she was not able to find him,” Wilson said. “ She looked everywhere and eventually found him in the bedroom spreading the bed with the quilt.

He was very moved by the gesture.”

The CCQV has 350-400 veterans on its list for quilts.

It can take about six months to get a quilt. Anyone can request a quilt at www.qovf. org. Once you put in your address, the closest guild will be notified to send a quilt to the veteran.

Wilson says they will continue to honor veterans for their service.

“We’ll never stop because we’ll always have wars,” Wilson said. “We can’t make them fast enough.”

The CCQV presented 152 quilts in 2014.

Wilson and the volunteers say they receive much joy from awarding the quilts and feel obligated to do so.

“I feel like we’re able to live the way we do because of their sacrifice,” Wilson said. “I don’t have to worry about anyone telling me what I can and cannot read or where I can or cannot worship.”

Wilson said that some of the veterans even stop by during some of Saturday social meetings in order to thank the volunteers.

“We receive thank-you notes from the veterans and even some drop-in visits,” Wilson said. “Some of them have even said the quilt means more to them than the medals and rewards they have received because they were given to them by civilians. Many times veterans don’t get much recognition from civilians.

Visitors were invited to circulate through the building so they could see the news, advertising, circulation and business areas of the newspaper. Historical displays were arranged in the front lobby and in a couple of other areas in the building.

Fol low i ng t he Coweta Cou nt y Com m issioners’ recent decision to go with the “rollback” millage rate, county staff has revised the proposed budget, making $3.3 million in cuts. County sta ff had proposed a n increase in the property tax millage rate. The rollback rate is a decrease in the rate; however, the rollback rate brings in the same amount of revenue as last year’s rate, because of an increase in property values.

The original proposed budget was $72 , 56 4, 576 , and the revised proposal is $69,258,236.

However, the budget is a “working document,” and county staffers were still working Wednesday on possible changes.

The public hearing is on

the agenda for tonight’s commissioner’s meeting. Once the public hearing is closed – likely during tonight’s meeting – no more public comment will be taken on the budget.

Fol low i ng t he Coweta Cou nt y Com m issioners’ recent decision to go with the “rollback” millage rate, county staff has revised the proposed budget, making $3.3 million in cuts. County sta ff had proposed a n increase in the property tax millage rate. The rollback rate is a decrease in the rate; however, the rollback rate brings in the same amount of revenue as last year’s rate, because of an increase in property values.

The original proposed budget was $72 , 56 4, 576 , and the revised proposal is $69,258,236.

However, the budget is a “working document,” and county staffers were still working Wednesday on possible changes.
