In the wake of the Orlando nightclub shooting, there have been renewed calls for bans on “assault weapons.” AR-15s and other “modern sporting rifles” are hot topics of discussion each time a mass killing is carried out with them. People ask – why does a civilian need such a gun? But AR-15s in particular, and similar guns, are very popular. They are fun to shoot, and the ammunition is fairly inexpensive compared to some rounds. The recoil is very light compared to other guns. “The AR 15 is kind of the neat thing to have,” said Rusty Morris, owner of the AR Bunker in Newnan. In case you’re wondering, no, the “AR” in AR-15 doesn’t stand for assault rifle. Or automatic rifle. It’s neither an assault rifle – a technical term for what most people would call a machine gun, nor is it automatic. They are semi-automatic – which means one trigger pull shoots one bullet. AR stands for Armalite Rifle – the company that first produced them. Automatic weapons – which fire multiple bullets from a single trigger pull, are strictly regulated. You can buy one – but it must have been built before 1987. Buyers have to go through a five-month background check and extensive security. And they are expensive. Morris said they recently sold one for $32,000. Morris said that, to his knowledge, only

He said the thing that confuses him is that gunman Omar Mateen had been under investigation by the FBI and had been on a terror watch list. Currently, there’s nothing that stops someone on the terror watch list from legally purchasing firearms. On Wednesday, there was a 15-hour filibuster in the U.S. Senate to bring forward a vote on two gun control measures – not allowing those on terror watch lists to buy firearms, and an expansion of background checks. Both measures were previously voted on in December. Both failed. Morris said he’s okay with not allowing those on terror watch lists to buy guns. “I think there are probably some … things that can be done that would possibly help” prevent such tragedies, Morris said. “We spend billions of dollars overseas and we don’t do anything to help our veterans. We don’t do anything much to help the mentally ill. We need to set up some programs to assist those people,” Morris said. If the assault weapons ban were to be reinstated, it wouldn’t affect the sale of any guns that are in circulation today. It would only apply to newly-manufactured items. The previous ban restricted magazines for rifles and pistols to 10 rounds, and

one crime has been committed by a properly registered automatic weapon since 1934. And that was a police officer who shot his wife. While so-called “assault weapons” get a lot of attention because they are often used in mass shootings, a standard pistol can fire off just as many rounds. “Anybody that was competent could have taken a Glock with an extended mag and accomplished the same thing,” Morris said of the Orlando shooting. And handguns are easier to conceal and you can change out the magazines more quickly. “Any of the high-capacity pistols could have accomplished the same thing he did.” Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people in 2007 with two handguns. Until the Orlando shooting, it was the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history. The significant difference between using a handgun or an AR-style rifle is the power. The rifle rounds move faster and have significantly more power. One bullet has the ability to injure multiple people because it can pass right through someone. The other significant difference is rifles are more accurate over long distances. Morris thinks the concern over socalled “assault weapons” is blown out of proportions. “You can accomplish whatever his aims were with a lot of different things,” Morris said.
