Some residents will soon be able to take a whirlwind trip around the world of wine – within the confines of Coweta County. T h e B o y s a n d G i rl s C l u b s o f C owe t a C o u n t y w i l l h o s t t h e i r fourth annual Wine Tasting Night on Saturday, Aug. 18, inside the Historic Train Depot. The event theme will be an “Even i ng A rou nd t he World .” Guests will be able to sip wines from various countries such as Italy, France, Spain, New Zealand, Australia and Chile. Patrons can also sample assorted c ra f t be er s a nd n ibble on appe tizers, said Emily Alfano, special events coordinator with the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta. A silent auction will have several big ticket items for guests to bid on throughout the night. “It’s a fun event that people look forward to every year. Our board members in Newnan are very passionate about t he cause,” A l fa no said. T he wine tasting is t he second biggest fundraising event for the Newnan Boys and Girls Club at 72 Wesley St. and the Howard Warner Boys a nd Gi rls Club at 55 Sava nnah St. P ro ce ed s w i l l suppor t severa l program areas including education and career, character and leadership, health and life skills, the arts and sports and f itness and recreation, Alfano said. The organization hopes to raise at least $32,500. “We’re making real strides with the kids at our clubs, but we can’t do it alone,” said Lauren Odom, director of both the Newnan and Coweta County Boys a nd Girls Clubs. “It ta kes t he ha rd work a nd passion of community leaders like this to support our kids and give them the resources they need to reach their full potential.” Currently, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coweta County serve 200 kids each day.

A “lights out” finale helped close out the recent Monster M a n i a a nd Tou r n a ment of Destruction at Senoia Raceway. During the final monster truck event, "War Wizard" leapt into the air and came down as darkness enveloped the raceway because of a momentary loss of power. It was unplanned, but a thrilling end to the event, according to track promoter Mayes Massey. “It was not exactly they way I would have scripted the show to end, but the crowd loved it,” he said. "That is the most rewarding part for our family. The fans,
families, kids all laughing and having fun together.” More than 3,000 were in attendance for last weekend's event, which featured events such as a demolition derby, "Dukes of Hazzard” jump, a Power Wheels demo derby for kids and racing action in the Crate Late Models and Late Model Sportsman divisions. “ We have fa ns ca l l us about this show in March,” Massey said. “We wreck almost everything in the place, and the fans love to see all that crashing stuff. The kids love the monster trucks.” In the end, War Wizard upset last year’s defending freestyle champion, Gunslinger. The freestyle event
showcases monster trucks p e r for m i n g h i g h s p e e d doughnuts, crushing cars, and jumping over walls. "It is d r iven by fa n applause, so usually the guy who does the craziest act is going to win,” Massey said. Along with War Wizard and Gunslinger, other trucks such as Full Boar 2.0, Storm Da m age , a nd Hu r r ica ne Force were part of the event. All five entries are legitimized Fox Sports Monster Trucks. Cowet a raci n g le gend Clint “Cat Daddy” Smith won the Crate Late Model race during the event, while Michael Page took the win in the Late Model Sportsman division. Media specialist and track
chaplain Michael Coleman helped MC the event and said the annual event is a great way to celebrate back to school and provide affordable family entertainment. “We make sure our fans get a premium show every time they come,” Coleman said. “This track has a great history behind it, and it’s the best mix of old and new.” For those who missed the monster truck extravaganza, the good times continue later this month. On Aug. 18, the raceway will host the USCS Winged Outlaw Sprint Cars, followed up by a “waterless boat race” on Aug. 25 where drivers will tow old jalopy boats behind their jalopy cars for a game of smash-up derby.
