Locals don’t agree with negative ‘Insatiable’ reviews

taylor@newnan.com One of Netf lix’s newest series “Insatiable,” which was f ilmed in Newnan, has met with both national criticism and local praise. The show’s pilot was f i l med at t he dow nt o w n h i s t o r i c c o u r thouse in 2017. The show is described as a da rk comedy about be aut y pageants and how a girl gets revenge on the people who bullied her. Actress Debby Rya n plays the lead role, Patty Bladell. Since “Insatiable” was released Aug. 10, it has had a tough time in the review department. “‘Insatiable’ tries extremely hard to throw edgy jokes at the wall, hopi ng t h at t hey w i l l t u r n t he s how i nto a sharp satire of how our society shuns the weak,” Variety magazine said. “I know that there is a human creator behind Ne t f l i x ’s ‘ I n s at i a ble .’ But this would-be bingewatch is so sloppy, that it borders on inadvertent brilliance,” Vanity Fair magazine said. “Even ca l l i ng ‘ I n satiable’ a television series seems to elevate it too much ,” Jezebel m a gazine said. the new show was even posted on Change.org, receiving more tha n 230,000 signatures. T he pet it ion st ates , “This series will cause e at i n g d i sorder s , a nd perpetuate the further objectification of women's bodies.” T he creator of t he s h o w, L a u r e n G u s sis, talked to The Hollywood Reporter about how t he re cent bac klash ca n be related to censorship. “I think we are, as a s o c i e t y, g e t t i n g ve r y close to the dangers of cen sorsh ip,” she sa id . “I wanted to poke at all t hose issues t h rough comedy. But every single one of the issues that these characters struggle with – from eating disorders to body dysmorphia, to sexuality to needing outside power and validation, to wanti n g to b e p e r fe c t , to mental illness – I have s t r u g g le d w it h e ver y single one of those things.” And although the show ’s f i rst season received a 1 5 percent rat i ng on Rot ten Tom ato e s , a n A m er ican review-aggregation we b s i t e fo r f i l m a n d television, locals seem to have a different view on the show.
