I’ve noticed that the current wedding cake trends fall into two categories: traditional with a twist and edgy. Traditional brides really love keeping with buttercream icing with movement and texture in either waves or buttercream all over, or horizontal movement throughout the cake.

Brides willing to step out of the box want to make a statement with a black or very dark wedding cake. Flecks of gold, deep-colored florals and feathers add to the mood of these designs.”

Dark and Moody wedding themes are an elegant and dramatic way to let your style shine. Brides are breaking tradition and substituting richer, darker hues in place of the classic pastels and whites. Chic tones such as dark purple, burgundy, navy blue, forest green and gold will set a romantic stage for your wedding day. To achieve this look, use black as your main color in place of the traditional white or beige. Highlight by choosing three to four accent colors. Darker shades of your favorite colors will add to the moody ambiance and allow you to personalize the look. Incorporate metallic gold, rose gold or copper details to add dimension to your color palette. If you just can’t completely ditch the conventional pastels, choose one shade and work it into the scheme as a complimentary color. Use your chosen color palette for your invitations, ceremony decor, wedding party attire, table centerpieces, flowers and cake. Accent with feathers, greenery, lots of candlelight and antique-style serving dishes. Incorporate velvet tablecloths and chair covers for a dramatic flair. Crystals and gemstones add glamour and femininity to your setting and are stunning centerpieces when paired with candlelight. Finalize the mood by providing feathers or wish lanterns for your send-off ritual. This year’s dark and moody trend answers the call of your rebellious side while delighting your guests in a romantic and dramatic experience on your big day.

essica McKee and Alden Cheever grew up together in Newnan. According to Jessica, they first fell in love when they were 11 years old. After dating on and off for several years, they made their final reconnection last year and knew they were meant to be together. The couple tied the knot at the secluded Dunaway Gardens in Coweta County last fall, surrounded by lush greenery in the garden’s mossy amphitheatre. Jessica loved the “secret garden” feel of Dunaway, having been to weddings there before. It was the only venue they looked at before deciding it was the perfect fit for them. “There was something about the way the gardens felt and looked during late fall that felt enchanting,” she said. Jessica had helped several friends plan their weddings, and now that it was her turn, she knew exactly what she wanted. “I was pretty adamant that I wanted NO white for our wedding, which is pretty unconventional for a Southern wedding. I wanted our overall feel to be moody and romantic, with an edge,” she said. She got exactly what she was looking for with the help of Evermore Wedding Planners, based in Newnan. Her color scheme included deep burgundy, a light ivory

I loved being able to incorporate a moody, edgy style that had touches of black and dark flowers but lots of romantic details like tons of candlelight as well. — Jessica Cheever

and blush pink, with a dusty blue as an accent. The color black showed up in several non-traditional spots. They used blackfooted containers for all of the florals and black velvet linens for the cake tables. They hung black chandeliers above the head table, which were lit with hundreds of candles to set the perfect mood. Their cake? A very non-traditional black. “I feel like there are some elements that you have to keep somewhat traditional with a wedding to appease everyone, but the cake to me represented a fun detail that I could step outside of the box with and have something truly unique,” she said. Bonne Bedingfield, owner of Beautifully Baked by Bonne in Newnan, created a five-tiered masterpiece. The cake was seamlessly covered in black fondant and featured hand-painted burgundy roses. Real roses and purple-hued leaves popped between layers, and the final touch was a hint of gold leaf. Florist Melanie Deyton created bouquets of dark flowers, “as close to black as we could get,” said Jessica. Her bouquet featured garden roses, anemones, ranunculus, lisianthus, seeded eucalyptus and tree ivy. Jessica and her sister also included a single peony in honor of their late grandmother who loved peonies. The stems were wrapped with blue silk and secured by an antique brooch from Alden’s grandparent’s house in Maine. The ceremony took place in the garden’s amphitheatre, where Jessica and Alden exchanged vows on an antique rug from her father’s office, flanked by glowing pillar candles and fresh greenery. The reception was furnished with vintage seating from Vintage Rental, and the tent poles were wrapped with more fresh greenery, bringing the garden feel throughout the reception tent. The guests enjoyed an antique buffet loaded with Italian pastas, salad and bread by local caterer, Your Chef to Go. They even brought in a couch and a TV so the football fans wouldn’t miss out on that evening’s games. DJ Erik Patterson handled the music for the ceremony and reception. “It was important to me to use non-traditional music for the ceremony and to pick songs that had meaning to us,” said Jessica. “For example, our exit song at the end of the ceremony was to When in Rome’s ‘The Promise.’” Erik, a longtime friend, had Jessica's full confidence and everything went exactly as planned. Overall, Jessica said her wedding was beyond wonderful, and credits the talented vendors located throughout the county who helped her make her wedding day special. “From our story to the actual wedding day, it has felt like a fairy tale. I loved being able to incorporate a moody, edgy style that had touches of black and dark flowers but lots of romantic details like tons of candlelight as well.” Coweta is full of opportunities to help create your perfect wedding. he average cost of a wedding for couples who married in 2017 was $25,576. That’s a sizable amount, and a big portion of that was spent on the wedding venue. Couples spent an average of $13,107 on their wedding venues in 2017. That figure easily dwarfs the next biggest expense ($6,163 for the engagement ring) for couples tying the knot. Because the wedding venue comes with such a potentially high sticker price, couples should give ample consideration to a host of factors before choosing where to get married.

Size

Until they can agree on a guest list, couples might want to delay even looking for venues. However, some couples might want to first look at some venues so they can determine just how many guests they can afford to invite.

Some couples might have an ideal time of year they hope to get married. Some even know the exact date they hope to get married. While that can help with the planning, it can also limit couples with regard to their venue options. Some venues may be booked for as much as a year or more in advance during peak wedding season. Master the Wedding Save-the-Date

any couples’ weddings take more than a year to plan. Couples want all of the special people in their lives to witness their vows, and giving guests advance notice can ensure as many loved ones as possible attend the ceremony. To be certain that guests have ample notice to clear their schedules, many couples now turn to save-the-date cards, which announce weddings well in advance of the actual wedding day. Save-the-date cards once were reserved only for weddings that required travel or special circumstances, such as destination weddings. But the cards have now become commonplace for all weddings. That’s because many people plan vacations or business trips anywhere from four to six months in advance. Busy people require plenty of notice to include this important date on their calendars, particularly when wedding dates fall during popular travel seasons or around the holidays. Save-the-date cards are typically mailed six to eight months prior to the wedding, though some are sent as early as a year before the big day. Once a date and a location is secured, save-the-dates can be ordered and mailed. Save-the-date cards require couples to assemble their guest lists well in advance of the wedding. Everyone who will get a wedding invitation should also receive a save-the-date card. There’s no turning back once cards are sent, so couples will need to be certain everyone they want to attend is getting advanced notice. It’s acceptable to mail savethe-date cards even if some wedding day details are still up in

the air. Guests really only need to know the date and location of the wedding. Couples also can use the save-the-date card to direct invitees to a wedding website where guests can learn the details of the wedding as they unfold. RSVP information does not need to be included on the savethe-date card. Save-the-date cards are much less formal than invitations, so couples can have fun with them.
