Senoia youth baseball swings into season with opening day

BY JEFFREY CULLEN-DEAN jeffrey@newnan.com The 28 teams of the Senoia A rea At h letic Association gathered at Leroy Johnson Park for opening day. “We ask for one thing to represent Senoia, that is to play hard and have fun,” Matthew Bennett, president of the Senoia Area Athletic Association, said to the kids. “What these kids do and what these parents do is what I’m here for,” said Jim Gay, the director of the Coweta County Recreation Department. “I was blown away by the effort the board and volunteers put in here.” Three of the teams were girls softball teams, wh ic h were rei nt ro duced to SAAA. According to Bennett, SAAA had softball teams three yea rs ago but were discontinued. “Softba l l was away for three years but we brought it back,” he said at the Saturday kickoff event. Registration for the softball teams opened last fall and interest in

Cowet a Cou nt y ’s Troop 47 recently had a n u nu su a l ceremony – a cou r t of honor i n which eight Scouts were elevated to Eagle rank at the same time. T he ceremon ies were held on Scout Sunday at Central Baptist Church in downtown Newnan. The new Eagle Scouts are Kirby Bowen,

jeffrey@newnan.com Mayor Keit h Brady and the Newnan Tree Com m ission v isited t he cit y of New na n’s si x lo c a l element a r y schools to plant trees for t he k i nder g a r ten classes. This is the 18th year for t he t ree -pla nt i ng program. The trees are planted when the students are in kindergarten so they will be able to w atc h t hem g row over the several years they will be at the schools. “This is your tree,” Brady said to the students at Atkinson Elementary. “As you grow bi g a n d s t r on g , t h i s tree will grow big and strong.” Terry Quigley, chief ranger of the Georgia Forestry Commission, ex pla i ned to t he st u-

de n t s h ow t re e s a re important because t hey prov ide breat hable air. “ We w a n t y o u t o respect t rees ,” Q u igley said. “We want you to t a ke ca re of t hem because they’re important to being alive.” “Our hope is that Arbor Day brings t he beauty a nd sign i f ica nce of t rees to t he publ ic ’s at tention. Learning at such a young age, and tree pl a nt i n g ceremon ie s held at t he loca l element a r y s c ho ol s a re e ve n t s t h a t we l o o k forward to each year. After the tree at each s c h o ol w a s pl a n t e d , st udents were each g iven crepe my r t le seedlings to plant and care for at home.
