ake a stroll around history and beauty. This is just a small vision of what Georgia’s downtown areas offer. In 1980 Georgia’s Main Street program began helping represent strong central business districts throughout the state. Main Street is a nationally accredited non-profit program whose mission is to promote, maintain and revitalize historic downtown districts. Georgia Main Street is housed in the office of downtown development at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs in Atlanta. The City Menus was fortunate to listen to a wonderful presentation from Jessica Reynolds, director of downtown development for Georgia Main Street. No matter which city you are reading this from, we all know that our downtown offers the highest concentration of small businesses, a sense of place, and large public investment, and that our downtowns are the yardstick of community support. “For every one dollar spent Downtown, it equals twenty-six dollars in return, Main Street downtown is the best investment to make in the community,” Reynolds said. survey to help identify Coweta's transportation infrastructure and traffic priorities for the upcoming TSPLOST is now available online. The survey is available by visiting www.drivingcoweta.com . TSPLOST is a five-year, 1 percent sales tax that can fund transportation projects and transit operations. Coweta voters likely will decide whether to implement the tax in November. The sales tax is expected to raise
$100 million over five years, and, if approved, would start being collected in April 2020. In tandem with the survey, the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce has been conducting public input sessions to help determine residents' vision for improving roadways, sidewalks, intersections and public trails. The last public engagement meeting is scheduled for April 30 at Northgate High School and will begin at 6 p.m.

ignated as an accredited Main Street America program for meeting rigorous performance standards set by the National Main Street Center, according to a press release from the city of Newnan. The 2018 Georgia Main Street impacts included over 3.28 million people visiting downtown areas across Georgia. Additionally, 684 businesses completed rehab projects equaling 75 million dollars in direct costs. There were 448 completed public improvement projects that add up to 58 million dollars spent. New housing was added with 796 housing units equaling 134 million dollars spent in construction. “Residential is a key component which creates a place for people to live,” Reynolds said. “Living is the key – people are moving into downtown areas.” With people moving downtown, over 1,000 new businesses across Georgia opened in 2018, equalling 4,000 net jobs in downtown areas, which is up by five percent compared to 2017. There are several standards that have to be met by Georgia Main Street’s criteria. For example, to be either one of
sustainable revitalization efforts. “These programs deserve recognition for generating impressive economic returns, preserving community character and celebrating local history,” Patrice Frey, CEO of the National Main Street Center, said in a press release. “Main Street America Accredited communities are part of a powerful movement of changemakers, and their dedication to improving quality of life in the places they call home is inspiring.” Main Street Newnan Manager Courtney Harcourt said the program’s mission is to develop and maintain “a
healthy, viable downtown commercial district symbolic of community caring and the high quality of life available to residents and visitors alike.” According to Harcourt, MSN conducts its mission through the use of downtown events and urban design. “This approach provides our community with the opportunity to effectively stimulate our commercial downtown by leveraging partnerships, our culture, small businesses, local assets, architectural heritage and community events to support local enterprises and community pride,” she said.
the Main Street classic designations, an affiliate or a GEM, which is the ‘best of the best’. “We have 70 classics, 29 affiliates, and 16 GEMS in the state of Georgia. Villa Rica, Carrollton, and Bowdon are all classics in the West Georgia region, and Newnan along with Rome are two of our sixteen GEM communities in the state,” Reynolds said. Reynolds said Georgia is leading the way in the United States. Economic vitality is strong with a focus on what is trending downtown in the variety of stores, working on vacancies, and approaching inconsistencies in store hours. When asked about Newnan’s status as a Georgia Main Street GEM, Reynolds said shared the characteristics of a GEM city are stable leadership - success rises and falls on leadership - and a strong historic preservation ethic. The 2019 National Accreditation Press Release highlighted tremendous accomplishments in Newnan. Main Street Manager Courtney Harcourt said downtown Newnan was a busy district in 2018. An estimated 901,912 visitors attended 583 events, leveraging 1,145 volunteer hours. “We accounted for 33 new businesses that opened in 2019, creating 81 new jobs, and an estimated $2,703,777 worth
Main Street Manager Courtney Harcourt of investment into the built environment,” Harcourt said. Main Street Newnan launched a new pedestrian program in 2018, known as “Share with Care,” and embraced a Placemaking Master Plan for the district. “We encourage the community to visit mainstreetnewnan.com for information about our events and becoming engaged with our downtown program,” Harcourt said.
Jesus Christ is not some powerless, dead historical figure. He is alive. He is present. If you are thirsty, He is the Living Water. If you are hungry, He is the Bread of Life. He protects. He intercedes. He fills us up. He satisfies our souls. He is awesome in strength and mighty in power. He is the Lamb of God. He is the Lion of Judah. He is the Indescribable Gift. He is our Great High Priest. He is our Mediator. He is our Hope. He is our Peace. He is our Burden Bearer. He is our Good Shepherd. He is our Refuge. He is our Strength. He is our Rock. He is our Sword. He is our Shield. He is our Way Maker. He is our Miracle Worker. He is our Wonderful Counselor. He is our Everlasting Father. He is Lord of lords. He is King of kings. There is no one beside Him, no one above Him. There is none like Him. He is an ever-present help in time of trouble. He is great and greatly to be praised! If we refuse to praise Him, the rocks will pipe up in our place (Luke 19:40). Stir up the embers within, and blaze forth His glory!
