Intersection improvements happening around historic Newnan

hen traveling around the historical districts of Newnan, you might have noticed new traffic lights being installed. Two are currently being implemented at the intersection of East Broad Street and Farmer Street along with the intersection of Roscoe Road and Sherwood Drive. The new traffic poles have black powder-coated traffic signal housings and mast arms. Newnan City Engineer Michael Clahr said a consultant is currently working on design upgrades for a new traffic light at LaGrange Street and Boone. “We would like to see these throughout the city, if it makes sense to do it throughout the city,” Clahr said. “We are implementing a split phase timing design, in which the timing issue will be fixed to current standards,” Clahr said. “The intersection upgrades will also include pedestrian signals and the light will help with traffic congestion.” Additionally, a troublesome intersection for those traveling on Bullsboro Drive at Amlajack Boulevard is undergoing major improvements. At this intersection some of the gore area is being removed to make room for dual left turns from Bullsboro Drive to Amlajack Boulevard and Celebrate Life Parkway.

Behind-the-scenes of Newnan’s annual fireworks celebration

PHOTO COURTESY OF THE NEWNAN ROTARY CLUB The fireworks site has to be approved each year taking into account tree lines and other factors. Also, if inclement weather conditions occur the day of the event, the fireworks company may suggest shooting fireworks at an earlier or later time to ensure safety.

BY BRITTANY SHIVERS BRITTANY@NEWNAN.COM

F

or the Newnan Rotary Club, it takes at least a year of behindthe-scenes preparation to successfully put on the Fourth of July fireworks celebration. Carol Moore, the Newnan Rotary Club President, is the one leading the club in the event planning for this year. One of the most crucial steps for the club is booking the fireworks display company a year in advance. Because of the popularity of fireworks on July 4, the club must book a company early to en-

sure that there will be fireworks for the extravaganza, according to Moore. After all, without this first step, there would be no event. Vendors are also secured as early as a year out because they get booked just as quickly. The Rotary Club tries to secure its sponsors as early as six to eight months before the event so that there is enough funding, according to Moore. “We could not do this event without the city of Newnan, Coweta County and the Coweta School System as they are our major donors,” said Moore. “We rely heavily on sponsorships to produce this event as it costs around $30,000 annually.” According to Ginger Queener, Ro-

tary fireworks committee member, a fireworks display can cost up to $1,000 a minute, which contributes to a lot of the cost. In addition, the club must secure special permits from the city for permission to put on the event and obtain insurance certificates from all parties. Three months before the celebration is when the Rotary club members come together to create a budget and book entertainment. This year's entertainment will be the Marine Corps League Color Guard, Crossroads Rebellion Band and the Men of Cornerstone Quartet. In May, the club plans the concessions menu and pricing. This year the menu will include hamburgers, hot dogs, candy and drinks. The club also plans for children's activities at this time, such as face painting and inflatables according to Moore. Although port-a-potties are often taken for granted, they are also an important aspect of the event. Making sure that bathrooms are accessible for everyone is a part of the planning for the club. Planning for handicap accessible restrooms is also a priority. June is the month of planning focused on safety. Moore said that the club coordinates safety and security measures with the Newnan Fire and Police Departments and Coweta Fire Rescue, which provides local emergency medical services. This is also when volunteers are solicited for each area: parking, security, weather, concession prep work and sales and entertainment. The week of July 4 is when the magic starts to come together. At the beginning of the week, details are finalized with vendors. On July 3, the port-a-potties arrive, vendors set up and sounds, staging, and lights are ready to go. Volunteers get up early on the day of the event to ensure everything goes according to plan especially with concessions and last-minute details. Throughout the months of planning that goes into the show, there is a lot of volunteer work being done. “The total estimated number of vol-

unteer hours to produce the event is 500,” said Moore. Moore and the club are happy to plan the event and strive for it to be the best show possible. “In most cities, you have paid staff who organize an event of this size, but our all-volunteer club is humbled and honored to have the job to host and coordinate such a wonderful community event,” said Queener. “As an all-volunteer service organization, with the incoming president leading the club in this endeavor, it’s a responsibility we do not take lightly.” The fireworks will be at Newnan High School’s Pope Field and the gates and concessions will open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Tha nk you... To all our public safety personnel. I am honored to join others in saluting and thanking our local First-Responders who keep our county safe and strong.

New turn lanes almost ready at Bullsboro, Amlajack BY SARAH FAY CAMPBELL SARAH@NEWNAN.COM

T

he Georgia Department of Transportation is removing striping from gored areas on Bullsboro Drive at Amlajack Boulevard/Celebrate Life Parkway and transforming them into left-turn lanes. The project doesn’t require any right-of-way acquisition, or even any paving – the lane is already there, it’s just been marked off with white stripes for years. The project is just about wrapped up, said Tyler Peek, district traffic engineer for GDOT. “We are anticipating turning the new signal on within the first couple of weeks of July,” Peek said Tuesday. Currently, there is a single left turn lane on both sides of the intersection. When the new lanes open and the new traffic signal goes live, motorists will only be able to turn left on the green arrow. This is known as protected phasing. Currently, motorists can turn left on a green arrow, and also have the ability to turn left on green if they can turn left safely, known as permitted phasing. Because of high traffic volumes at the intersection, “there are a lot of times of the day where you aren’t going to find a gap” in the traffic, Peek said. It would likely only be late at night or in other very low traffic times that people may find themselves sitting at a red arrow when they formerly would have been able to turn left, he said. In addition to the new signal and removing the striping, crews had to do some slight reconfiguring of the concrete island on Amlajack to accommodate the dual turns, Peek said. Peek said GDOT has been working with Coweta County and the city of Newnan in finding the right improvement for the intersection. They had noticed that the turn lane onto Amlajack wasn’t long enough, resulting in limited “storage” capaci-

Sometimes motorists pull onto the grass median to get to the turn lane. The first plan was to make the turn lane longer, but there are some drainage structures in the median that kept that project from being feasible, Peek said. GDOT collected some traffic data and determined that traffic numbers would support the dual turn lanes, he said. The only downside to having dual turn lanes is that they don’t allow the permissive phasing option, Peek said. In some situations, that can be enough of a disadvantage to stop the project. But for this intersection, it was determined there would be greater storage and through-movement of traffic with the dual lanes, Peek said.

Faith is developed by meditating on God’s Word. Fear is developed by meditating on Satan’s lies. Such fearful meditation is called “worrying.” Don’t do it! The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. Use it to fight Satan every time he comes against you. Hold up your shield of faith and quench all of his fiery darts. Speak words of faith and fear will depart. – Read Psalm 27 America Must Stand With Israel! God is Good All The Time The W. Reece Payton Co., Inc.

Newnan Rotary fireworks back on the 4th BY CLAY NEELY

CLAY@NEWNAN.COM

Rain or shine, the Newnan Rotary Club will host its annual Fourth of July celebration with fireworks and entertainment at Newnan High School’s Pope Field, located at the end of Armory Road. Since 1987, the event has been led by the Newnan Rotary Club, which has partnered with the City of Newnan, Coweta County, Coweta County Schools and local businesses and individuals to host the celebration as a gift to the whole community. Admission to the fireworks show is free for all to attend. There will be kids activities including face painting by Face Joy, crafts with the Newnan Junior Service League, the “Most Patriotic-Dressed Child” contest and live entertainment from two local bands. The Rotary Club will have concessions available for purchase that will include hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks

and candy, and Foundation Church will provide free ice cream. This year, the club has partnered with Southside Support, which will be providing the SNAZ (Special Needs Accommodation Zone) RV – where families who have children with special needs can come and experience a quiet zone to relax or regroup after a meltdown – a diaper changing station for any size, a clean place to change a feeding tube and a breastfeeding area. Gates and concessions will open at 5:30 p.m. Live music provided by the Crossroads Rebellion Band and the Men of Cornerstone quartet will begin at 6:30 p.m. Fireworks will begin promptly at dark. Parking on campus is limited, so attendees are encouraged to arrive early. Handicapped parking is available in on Armory Road in the NHS band practice area.

Your courage keeps us strong. Georgia wouldn’t be home without the many safety officials, first responders, veterans and military personnel who protect us every day. Thank you for your selfless efforts that make this community the best place to live and work. Our team appreciates your care, courage and dedication to Coweta County. After all, those are the same empowering qualities we share with our patients.
