resh food, prepared to order and made from scratch might sound like a pricey endeavor if you’re looking to eat out.

However, that’s just not the case at Cafe Dionne. Tucked away in a shopping center in Sharpsburg, the little restaurant has developed a loyal following since opening their doors.

For owner Dionne and her husband Chef Harold, the principle is simple – deliver phenomenal food, service and pricing in a straightforward way.

“It’s like Coweta County – down to Earth and unpretentious,” he said.

“People come in for breakfast know my wife and myself, we joke around and have a good time. That’s what’s so appealing about Coweta. People like that ’neighbor-to-neighbor’ experience, but you also have to have quality.”

Cafe Dionne has carved out an identity for being a go-to spot for breakfast – a meal most commonly associated with home cooking – and the fare walks the walk.

“I have lived in Coweta County for 20 years and this is the best breakfast in the county hands down,” said Dan Davis, who dines at Cafe Dionne regularly with his family. “I was sold after the first bite.”

“Where can you get from-scratch cooking for under $10 dollars?” Harold asked. "This is a family restaurant and My family and children eat here, so it's important that you can bring the kids and eat without breaking the bank.”

“Delivering amazing food at a good price is the primary mission, but it’s still a people-centric business” Harold says.

“There are two kinds of successful restaurants – name brand companies with millions behind them, or mom and pops like Cafe Dionne,” he said. “The small business guy like Cafe Dionne has to depend on the community spreading the word. The wonderful thing about the Coweta County residence is people are spreading the word especially on Yelp, Facebook and Tripadvisor.

Cafe Dionne currently maintains a 4.5 out of 5 rating on Yelp, so they must be doing something right.

A preview of the walk in cooler confirms Harold’s ethos. Filled with fresh produce, meats and cheeses, you’d be hard pressed to find anything canned.

ange juice are always ready. While the cafe doesn’t serve soda, Harold says he doesn’t mind if someone sneaks one in.

During the week, it’s only $3.95 for a kids breakfast. On the weekends, the cafe offers a buffet for only $16.95, which included a drink. For ages 3 - 10, the buffet is only $6.95. Tuesday’s, senior eats for only $6.95.

However, Chef Harold is looking to extend the Cafe’s offerings by offering a dinner menu and live Jazz music on Friday evenings.

“We want more friendship and fellowship in evening,” he said. Coweta County residents should be able to get a 5 star meal and entertainment without traveling to Buckhead or Atlanta.”

House specialties include jumbo shrimp and grits, grilled pork chops, grilled chicken, lobster and basil prawns, grilled prawns with ravioli and a signature Collard Green Dip. “The ravioli pasta and sauce is all from scratch,” he said. “And the pork chops are the real deal – sized the way pork chops should be.”

“Friday night’s are for people who love jazz but don’t want to travel to Atlanta to get that experience,” he said. “You get music and five-star food that will compete with any Buckhead restaurant.”

Cafe Dionne is closed on Mondays and open Tues-Sunday 6:30am-2pm with dinner service Thursday-Sunday from 5:30pm-9pm.

City of Homes or City of Apartments?

You may or may not have noticed the signs around town that say “City of Homes, Not Apartments” and wondered what the message is behind these signs? What are the concerns that citizens of this town are having?

The City of Newnan was established in 1828 and was later deemed “The City of Homes” because the town was known for having one of the highest home ownership rates per capita in the United States at the time. Streets throughout Newnan are adorned by historic homes, cotton mills, railroads and other remnants of the town’s rich history. From 2000 to 2010, the City of Newnan saw over a 100% increase in residents, and that number has continued to climb. With the recent booming economy and the movie industry taking up residence in the area, Newnan has continued to see an overwhelming increase of people moving to the area.

Almost every which way you look, you can see new businesses popping up, new construction homes being built practically overnight, movies and TV shows being shot throughout town, and much more. With the increasing activity in this community, it’s a no brainer that people would be flocking to this area to make it their home. As with most growing towns, you begin to run out of places to build and expand horizontally so you begin to see offices, condos, townhomes, and apartments being built vertically to make up for the lack of space.

The number of multifamily complexes in the area has grown at a significant rate over the last couple of years. Between the ongoing apartments being built at The Promenade and the proposed apartment complexes off of the Bypass and East Broad Street, it’s obvious that residents of this community would have some concerns. With the increase in apartments, what does that mean for homeownership in the area? How does this affect everyday life such as traffic?

On one hand, you have the concerned citizens of the town that want to preserve the history and old town vibe that Newnan has to offer. Some might feel that the town could lose its communal atmosphere and that the town’s history and old town charm would be lost in the commercial and multifamily buildings popping up throughout the area. Is Newnan going to turn into another major city? Will the citizens of this town be overwhelmed with an abundance of traffic? Will the increase in apartments take away from the charm that Newnan has to offer?

On the other hand, an increase in residents usually aids in local businesses which help to boost the local economy. When the local economy is flourishing, so does its residents. Can residents of the community benefit from the added revenue that these apartments can bring? Could these apartments help bring new and younger families to the area?

The next City Council Meeting to discuss this debate will be on August 27th at 6:30pm to give the citizens of Newnan the opportunity to speak on the impacts, whether negative or positive, that these apartments could bring to our town.
