Knox furnishes the future of Newnan
BY CLAY NEELY

A
s Newnan’s population continues to boom, reaching new residents is a challenge facing most established small business owners. This third-generation family business uses lessons from its 65-year history to find new ways to serve its customers.
The name Knox is synonymous with fine home furnishings in Coweta County. Just south of the Court Square on Greenville Street, Knox Furniture is a staple for customers looking to fill their homes with furniture and accessories. It all began with founder Roy Knox, Sr. A WWII Navy Veteran, he epitomized the qualities of The Greatest Generation:
For nearly 65 years, the name Knox has been synonymous with fine furniture in Newnan. Seen outside their store on Greenville Street are Paul Deyton, Mark Knox and Sara Knox Rund. honor, duty, work-ethic, and sacrifice. In the Navy, Roy Sr. worked as a Seabee, becoming a master electrician and plumber. When he returned to Newnan after his service, those skills and traits came with him.

Danette, daughter, Sara Knox Rund and nephew, Paul Deyton. Along with selling home furnishings, the Knox family helped pass along life lessons and a strong work ethic to the third-generation. And running a family business means making everyone feel like they’re a part of it. “My grandmother emphasized to treat everyone as family as soon as they walk in the door,” Sara said. “We want to get them excited to be here.” Taking a stroll through Knox’s 65,000 sq.ft. showroom feels like the perfect combination of the traditional, small town retail experience, while offering a large variety of merchandise inclusive of every stage of life. Like many small business owners, Sara says the company is working hard on reaching the new residents of Coweta County who may not know about Knox, while still serving the customers who have patronized the store for generations. “I think everyone deserves to feel inspired in their own home and we want to help,” Sara said. “Shopping has changed, but we still strive to give customers the experience they’re looking for by providing everything from their first home, to their dream home to their retirement home.” Paul said some of the greatest lessons learned from his Uncle Mark are attention to detail, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed. Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever. – Psalm 112: 1-3 America Must Stand With Israel! God is Good All The Time The W. Reece Payton Co., Inc.

Small businesses see big results with NCBA
BY CLAY NEELY clay@newnan.com
S
hop local. This simple catchphrase has been the rallying cry for many small business owners, both in Newnan and across the country. In a world where tech giants have forced companies both small and large to reevaluate their strategies, the two-word rallying cry is more than a slogan for the Newnan Coweta Business Association. It’s their way of doing business. Newnan-Coweta Business Association President Bob Drescher is the owner of Water Source Plumbing and founded the Newnan-Coweta Business Association three years ago. Drescher said he saw the need for a personal relationship Business Organization unlike any of the existing local groups and organizations he was affiliated with or visited over his forty plus years involved in the contracting business. “I wanted it to be more than getting leads or tips,” he said. Drescher said he seeks to enhance sales for the business members over the long term by growing and nourishing personal interaction relationships between each and every business owner or ownersrepresentatives in the association and requiring a commitment to attend monthly meetings and the ability to be an active participant in the association. As a group they are able to get better pricing on items such as advertising and printing just to name a few. Drescher said he was inspired by the LaGrange Community following the completion of their Kia Plant. “They really pushed the message of buying local and doing business with local companies,” he said. “I like the idea of spending your hard earned money in the area. It makes a full circle." Drescher said a lot of people do not realize they can get the same goods and services right in their own backyard. “Help the same people you see every day in local stores, schools, churches or maybe on the kid’s baseball field,” he said. Starting a new business organization in Coweta was a tall order. Drescher said he set out by contacting all the companies, people and customers he could vouch
for and people he knew personally could vouch for. “We want people in good standing with the community they service and have good business practices,” he said. “After that, it’s all word of mouth and it seems we get a different company each time we advertise. They want more information and are coming to meetings with an interest in
“We know that doing business with locally owned and operated companies builds a thriving local economy where we support one another.” becoming a part of it.” What separates the NCBA from the others is the focus on local businesses and doing business inside the community. By sharing success stories and local contacts who can help, the organization aims to help its members open new doors of possibilities. “It’s just more personable and I think our members feel they’re getting their money’s worth,” Drescher said. "We know that doing business with locally owned and operated companies builds a thriving local economy where we support one another.” The NCBA meets monthly at the Summer Grove Golf Club. ather and entrepreneur, David Moore has been serving as a role model for his two daughters and the community since 2009. With more than 30 years of experience, he shares his skills and belief in giving back to the community through his business, Assured Roofing and Remodeling. One example of Assured Roofing’s contributions to the community includes sponsoring the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ golf tournament. David says, “This is a proud thing for me as a father — my daughters wear their dad’s business name on the back of their t-shirts.” David’s roofing and construction business is now housed in a brick and mortar location that serves all of west Georgia including the Newnan area and surrounding communities. “Growing up doing construction with my uncle’s business I learned traits that led me to where I am today. This was a natural skill that I adapted to with learning how people did construction; therefore I created my own company. I take great pride in customer service where I take care of all my clients like a friendship,” said David. Assured Roofing received recognition from Home Advisor as a preferred contractor, earning “The Best of 2019” badge.

Knox furnishes the future of Newnan

s Newnan’s population continues to boom, reaching new residents is a challenge facing most established small business owners.
