Peachstate Advanced Cardiac and Endovascular: Se ing the PACE for saving lives and limbs BY JILL WHITELY

PEACHSTATE ADVANCED CARDIAC AND ENDOVASCULAR
Dr. Oghenerukevwe Odiete
lthough Dr. Oghenerukevwe Odiete, MD, FACC, is a board-certified interventional cardiologist and endovascular specialist with nearly 12 years of experience, he sometimes describes himself as “a glorified plumber.” “I like blood flow. I work not just with the heart, but with the entire vascular system- all the veins and arteries ranging out from the heart to the brain to the toes. Preventative care is important to keep them free of blockages before major intervention is required.” A recent transplant from LaGrange, GA, Dr. Odiete opened his practice, Peachstate Advanced Cardiac & Endovascular, in Newnan in July to provide the Coweta County area with a Center for Heart and Amputation Prevention (CHAMP). While most cardiologists simply focus on the heart and related issues, Dr. Odiete takes a more holistic

approach, working to create public awareness on cardiovascular disease with a focus on treating the lower limbs and providing non-traumatic amputations related to vascular disease: “I'm kind of a one-stop shop. I focus heavily on amputation prevention by treating diabetes, hypertension, peripheral artery disease, and working with wound care experts.” “The amputation rate in Troup County was very high, especially among patients with diabetes. I assume those patients have peripheral artery disease unless I can prove otherwise. Decreased blood flow can cause peripheral neuropathy. All too often when these patients have non-healing wounds, the plan is to amputate first, and ask questions later. It’s so important for cardiologists and vascular surgeons to understand the inner workings of diabetes.” Early detection and intervention isn’t just essential in amputation prevention. “There are so many PACE . 8

Firefighter rises to challenge at local 5K BY CLAY NEELY

N
ewnan Firefighter Jason Scott isn’t afraid of a challenge. In fact, he seems to welcome the opportunity. Last Saturday, Scott was among the 164 participants in the 43rd annual Sunrise on the Square 5K. But instead of wearing traditional jogging garb, Scott strapped on 50 pounds of gear and dressed out in his full firefighting suit.
For the first two miles, Scott said he felt fine. Around the third mile is when he reminded himself of his promise of not giving up. He completed the race in 41 minutes and finished 110 out of 148 participants. “I wasn’t too worried about my time; I just didn’t want to walk or stop,” Scott recalled. “I wasn’t trying to set any personal records, but wanted people to see

me not giving up.” “Driving up Jackson Street is a whole lot different than running up it,” he continues. “But in the end, all that excitement and encouragement made me feel like a pro athlete taking the field.” After completing the race, Scott went back to the station to shower and carry on with his shift. He would work a fire call only hours later. This isn’t a one-off challenge for Scott, who says he’s spent years testing himself physically. “I like a challenge, and I want to make it as firefighter-oriented as possible to simulate those same conditions,” he said. “In the California wildfires, you see them walking miles and miles through the woods in full gear or maybe seeing those images of 9/11 firefighters who left their engines in the middle of the road to rush into buildings." For the last several years, he’s participated in the 9/11 climb, where Scott hops on a StairMaster at the gym, donned in full gear, and climbs 150 flights in honor of those first responders who perished in the towers. “If they can do all that, I can definitely run three miles in my gear,” Scott said. So how do you train for something like this? Well, Scott works out around two
hours daily and utilizes exercises including the push sled or tire flip, all of which help him focus on his breathing. When he first came to the Newnan Fire Department, he practiced jogging around the block in full gear, including oxygen tanks. Scott said he’s inspired to keep going by a good friend and workout partner who FIREFIGHTER . 4
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. The memories of those who have lost their lives to overdose were celebrated last weekend for International Overdose Awareness Day. International Overdose Awareness day is held Aug. 31 of each year. This year, because of COVID-19, Cowetans were invited to come out over Labor Day Weekend to the memorial tree in the Sprayberry Road Park. Purple ribbons were tied onto the tree’s branches, and visitors wrote the names of their loved ones on the ribbons. At the tree are Elaine English, Sherrill Sligar and Patricia Rudd, who each lost a child to overdose.

was battling cancer and provided him with some perspective. “When I would get tired, he talked about how he fought cancer and wished he had the health I do,” Scott said. “When someone tells you that, it makes it hard to say ‘I can’t.’ No matter how tired I am, if there’s still work to do, I’m good to go.” Scott said he plans on doing it again, but would aim to beat his time from this year. However, his passion for pushing himself is rooted in gratitude for his community. A former railroad employee, he worked with CSX for over a decade before being laid off after his shop closed. He spent the next eight months trying to become a firefighter.
After several years working in Clayton County, the father of three and 14-year Newnan resident was given the opportunity to work for his local fire department. “It’s another reason I try to show age is just a number and how grateful I am that Newnan gave me a job,” he said. “It feels good to do it for your community because they treat us so well. I want people to say ‘That’s Scott. He’s one of ours.’” Scott said he plans on running it again, but will focus on beating his 2020 time. What advice does Scott have for someone looking to challenge themselves and attempt to reach outside their comfort zone? “If you tell someone you’re doing it, you can’t back out,” he smiled. “When I told everyone I’d be out there, there’s no way I could back out. When you have a crowd watching you, you can’t help but give it your best.”

Gresham named Odyssey School’s Teacher of the Year BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com
A
shley Gresham has been selected Teacher of the Year by her peers at Odyssey Charter School in Newnan. “Her excitement about teaching and her innovative approach has made her a popular teacher here at Odyssey Charter School,” said Principal Scot Hooper, who established Odyssey’s Teacher of the Year program five years ago. Gresham – known as “Mrs. G” to her students and co-workers – joined the staff as the special education elementary teacher at Odyssey Charter in 2019. She holds bachelor degrees in psychology
and criminal justice from Georgia Southern University and a masters degree in organizational management-leadership from Charleston Southern University. According to her bio on the Odyssey website, Gresham also has worked in higher education, coaching, recreation and ministry and says she believes “every name has a story and every story matters.” Odyssey’s Teacher of the Year is chosen solely by his or her peers. Any staff member can nominate a candidate, but the final decision is made by the nominees’ fellow teachers.

“What we do differently than most schools is that the voting for the teacher of the year is limited to classroom teachers only,” Hooper said. “No administrators or administrative staff will vote. This guarantees that the award is truly a professional peer award.” Gresham may just be entering her second year at the school, but she already has made a lasting impression, Hooper said. “Her enthusiasm and willingness to introduce new ideas and PHOTO COURTESY ODYSSEY CHARTER challenges for her scholars was noticed and appreciated by the en- Ashley Gresham, a first-year teacher at Odyssey Charter School in Newnan, has been named the school’s Teacher of the Year. tire staff,” he said.

conditions that can lead to heart attacks, like high cholesterol, hypertension, and, again, diabetes, and it’s important to treat them early to prevent stents or other invasive procedures. The problem is that no one wants to come in to be seen when they’re feeling okay. It’s easy to blow off chest pain as heartburn. They wait until it becomes an emergency, and then we end up having to do a procedure that could have been avoided.” The team at PACE encourages proactive evaluation and screening, as well as minimally invasive and non-surgical care options. Early detection of cardiovascular and vascular disease means more effective treatments and a lower risk of potential complications. Dr. Odiete says it’s vital to understand that not every heart attack presents with the same set of symptoms, especially if you are a woman or diabetic: “You’re not always going to have crushing chest pain. Sometimes it will feel like a baby sitting on your chest, rather than an elephant. If you’re female, it could simply be a band of pressure that feels like your bra is too tight. You could experience nausea, sweating, stomach or epigastric pain, or radiating jaw pain.” When asked what keeps patients from seeking preventative treatment for their cardiovascular issues, Dr. Odiete cites the reasons he opened his practice: people are afraid of doctors, high healthcare
costs, and invasive procedures. “I wanted to combat that by building personal relationships with my patients, keeping costs down by performing as many procedures in-office as possible, and placing an emphasis on non-invasive treatments and preventative care.” For example, he says, procedures that were once performed by making an incision in the groin can now be done through the wrist, making it possible for the patient to go home the same day, and reducing both the risk of complication and recovery time. In addition, most blockages can now be removed as outpatient procedures, allowing patients to recover in the comfort and safety of their own homes. “If we can do a procedure in the office, it's better all around. It’s safer and less expensive for the patient, the insurance company tends to be happy to avoid the hospital charges, and I’m happier because I have that pre-existing relationship with both the patient and my team.” While Dr. Odiete’s patients tend to be over 55, he encourages anyone with concerns to come in for a consultation. “Anything out of the ordinary is worth investigating. Diabetics tend to blow off the early stages of claudication- the phase of arterial obstruction where exercise tends to cause pain- and attribute it to old age. The most common cause of preventable amputation is arterial disease. So it’s very important that we get you in and get you screened.” “I'm very passionate about limb salvage. If a patient is told they need an amputation, they need a second opinion, and I'm happy to see them.”
