RE/MAX Results agent offers education, authenticity to firsttime homebuyers BY JOSH JORDAN
C
oweta native Josh Jordan admits that leaving a successful career with the Coweta County Sheriff ’s Office after almost two decades to start his own real estate business sounds like a pretty radical change. But the two jobs are far more similar than most people imagine, he claims. “I grew up in a law enforcement family, and a lot of people think it’s about guns and fast cars, but it was really about the personal connection. of knowing that you helped someone at the end of the day was so rewarding,” he said. “It’s not that different now. I’m still making those same connections and helping those same families.” Jordan’s relationship with real estate began as a flirtation when he and his wife bought their first house. Home renovation shows were becoming popular, and the couple became obsessed with them. Josh wasn’t much of a handyman at the time, but his wife began copying the projects she saw on television, and they were soon flipping houses. They learned quite a bit as they went, but Jordan began to think about a real estate career when he discovered how much he didn’t know: “I can genuinely say, despite having a great agent, I never understood the contract and what it means and what you’re getting into at closing”. Meanwhile, Jordan’s career as a deputy advanced to the point where he was no longer out in the community, enjoying the relationships he had spent years building with his fellow citizens. It was time for a change. The Jordan family packed up and headed west. Josh attended real estate school in Reno, Nevada. He wanted to help families that were as nervous and confused as he once was: “sure, everyone wants to sell those five million dollar homes, but what I really want to do is educate and inform first time buyers. This is the biggest investment of their lives.” After finishing school and working in Nevada for a year, Jordan, again craving the connection to his family and hometown, moved back to Newnan over the summer and joined the RE/MAX Results team under the mentorship of his friend, Cindy Brooks, who had been Jordan’s real estate agent since his first home purchase in 2006. Even in the short time he’s been away, Jordan notes there has been a sharp increase in demand for homes in Coweta County. “It’s a very active
market. There’s huge growth- lots of people wanting to sell, lots of people wanting to buy. We have lots of people moving from out of town. It’s very affordable compared to the north side of Atlanta, but I’d say pricing has increased more than the average market.” While Jordan has been very successful since returning to Coweta and joining the RE/MAX Results team, having helped many of his fellow first responders sell and purchase their first homes, he admits that the same qualities that make him a good realtor may not make him the best realtor for everyone: “I’m very authentic. I’m gonna give it to you straight. I’ll take your panicked calls at ten at night and I’ll explain what your home inspection means in detail, but I’m going to give you the whole picture, whether it’s good or bad. I won’t hurt your feelings. But if you can’t handle that kind of honesty, I’m not the agent for you.” If you’d like to speak to Josh Jordan about buying or selling a home, he can be reached at 678.326.6940, or via his website at https://joshjordanhomes. com/. Josh is offering a one-year subscription to The Newnan Times-Herald to everyone who lists or purchases a home with him.

Author of Tradd Street Series will speak at Carnegie Tuesday BY LAUREL HUSTER LAUREL@NEWNAN.COM

Halloween Safety Tips and Tricks
O
K
aren White, author of the Tradd Street Series, will appear at the Newnan Carnegie Library Oct. 22 to discuss and sign her new book, “The Christmas Spirits on Tradd Street.” Her appearance at the library coincides with the day her book will be released. “When Penguin Random House Publishing reached out to us, we were so thrilled to have the opportunity to host Karen White on what is the first day of her new release, ‘Christmas Spirits on Tradd Street.’ We have had such an enthusiastic response, and if you have read the Tradd Series, you know how enjoyable and addictive her Southern gothic mysteries are,” said Lauren Jones of the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation. “The Christmas Spirits on Tradd Street” is the sixth installation in the Tradd Street series, with each book containing a mystery that is solved. The books are set in Charleston, S.C., and revolve around Melanie Trenholm, a real estate agent who loves old houses. White said she had been in Charleston many times at Christmas and had never done a Christmas book, so she chose to make her newest one holiday-themed. “We have Christmas, we have Tradd Street, and it’s a match made in heaven,” she said. White said that in the book, Melanie is decorating her house for a big Christmas dinner and dressing up her dogs as elves. “If that doesn’t put you in the Christmas spirit, I don’t know what will,” she said. However, new spirits have joined the residents at the house on Tradd Street, and they need Melanie’s help to solve a mystery. In addition to the Tradd Street series, White has also written several standalone novels and is a New York Times Bestselling author.

Karen White Her books are character-driven about a woman who finds herself in a situation she has to get out of, White said. Each of her books has an element of mystery, history and romance. White is also from the Atlanta area, so Southern family dynamics are also a contributing factor in her stories. She will be on tour from the middle of October to the middle of November, visiting cities and readers all over the Southeast. “This is the fun part, I make no secret that I’m not a fan of writing – it’s just really, really hard,” White said. “This is my reward, meeting with readers who think my characters are as real as I do.” A meet and greet with White will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 22, followed by her presentation at 10:30 a.m. and a book signing. The event is free, and registration can be found at www.eventbrite. com/e/karen-white-at-the-newnan-carnegie-library-tickets-69328717059 .
n Halloween night, hundreds of children and their parents flock the streets decked out as ghosts, ghouls and today’s favorite Disney characters. One thing parents should not have to worry about it is whether or not their children are safe. With Halloween quickly approaching, Tim Stout and Associates wants to provide some Halloween Safety Tips and Tricks to keep everyone safe while enjoying the holiday. Plan your route. Plan out which streets you want to visit. Consider which streets have better lighting or are not too close to a busy road. Neighborhoods that have extensive sidewalk options are also great for keeping your kids off the road. Finding a well lit area with sidewalks will help keep you and your little ones more visible to possible drivers and off the road. Practice walking safely. In the event that you need to cross a street, or don’t have sidewalks to walk along, talk to your kids about safe walking practices. When it gets dark outside, drivers have a harder time seeing you and your little ones so it is important to remain vigilant. Teach your kids to only cross at an intersection and to look both ways before crossing. When walking along a street that has no sidewalks, make sure you are walking along the left hand side of the road so you are facing traff ic. Put the electronic devices away. After you’ve had the chance to take pictures of your little ones dressed up in their costumes, put your phone and other electronic devices away. Doing so will help to keep you focused on your kids and making sure they are staying safe. If your kids are older and are venturing off alone, use a tracking app so you can keep up with their location. Get creative with their costumes. Make sure your kids are not only dressed appropriately for the weather, but also dressed with few accessories. Giving them less to hold onto will help to keep them focused on their surroundings and helps to avoid any safety hazards. Forego the masks if you can so their sight is not impared - try face paint instead! Brighter costumes also make it easier for them to be seen after dark. Inspect their goodies before they indulge. Feed your kids a meal before setting out on your trick-or-treating adventures to avoid them indulging early while walking around. Once home, inspect their candies for any open wrappers, choking hazards, etc. Discard anything that’s not sealed, has torn packaging or looks questionable. If you have young children, weed out gum, peanuts, hard candies and other choking hazards. If your child has food allergies, check candy labels carefully. Have fun. Most importantly, you and your kids should have fun. Try a theme that the whole family can get in on. If you have older kids, encourage them to trick-or-treat with friends. This night should be enjoyable for you and your little ones so be sure to soak it in.

Lunar Rover replica visits Lee Middle School
PHOTO BY LAUREL HUSTER Brian Ogle from Polaris shows Lee Middle School students the camera on the Lunar Rover Vehicle replica. The camera is remote controlled, just like the original vehicle whose camera was controlled from earth.
A
replica of the Lunar Rover Vehicle (LRV) used in the NASA Apollo 11 mission was on display at Lee Middle School Friday. Students and teachers dressed up in their best space gear and focused the day around space exploration. “We try to do a day like this once a month, where the kids can dress up and really get into what they are learning,” Principal Cindy Bennett said. Polaris Industries collaborated with the US Space and Rocket Center (USSRC) in Huntsville, Ala., to create a working replica of the LRV for the 50th anniversary of the mission to the moon, according to a press release from Polar-
is.
Brian Ogle, a former Lee Middle parent, is the manager of manufacturing at Polaris. He showed the replica at Auburn University the day before he visited Lee, and he said he thought the students at Lee would enjoy seeing it. “This is the right group to get excited about STEM, especially on a day like today when the first all-woman spacewalk is happening above us,” Ogle said. The new Polaris Lunar Rover Replica made its first public debut in Huntsville at the USSRC Apollo Celebration Car Show on July 13. The replica brakes, accelerates and has four-wheel Ackermann steering, like the original NASA LRV.
The fenders are fiberglass, molded using the original 50-year old molds that produced the parts that are on the moon. The replica, however, is much faster than the original. On Oct. 13, the replica made a lap around the Talladega Superspeedway before the NASCAR race, traveling at 25 miles per hour. Members of the original LRV crew and a NASA astronaut worked with the Polaris Lunar Rover Replica team on the project from start to finish. Polaris employees volunteered their time to work on the development of the near-exact LRV replica, according to the release. Features of the vehicle include a remote-controlled camera, similar to the
camera on the original rover that was controlled from Earth. It is the exact color and size of the original. There have been fewer than five replicas made, and this one is the only replica that has four-wheel steering, according to Ogle. The replica took nine months to build. “Having the opportunity to honor legends, work with members of the original crew and lend our expertise and technologies to build this Lunar Rover replica has been incredible,” Ogle said. “One of the coolest things was being able to mold the fiberglass fenders using the original 50-year-old molds. And now, seeing it in action, riding it – it’s amazing.”
