Happy Life CBD Store: Family-Owned CBD Dispensary Promotes Healing, Education BY JILL WHITLEY
S
tarting a business in the heart of Historic Newnan from across the country isn’t easy, but somehow, Coweta natives David and Kellie-Shae Turbyfield have managed: “Newnan is home,” Kellie-Shae said. “We love the small-town feel of the square and believe in family-owned businesses like ours. So we make it work.” With the help of their business partner-Kellie-Shae’s daughter, Ronni-Shae-- Happy Life CBD Store, located on 23 Jackson Street, is growing as rapidly as the CBD phenomenon itself. CBD --short for cannabidiol-- “is an essential plant oil that helps to relieve a va-
riety of symptoms like pain and anxiety,” Ronni-Shae said. “It’s made from industrial-grade hemp, which farmers have bred without THC, the part of the plant that makes you feel high.” An Army veteran, David does everything he can to run the store remotely while working in the Texas oil fields to help fund the store. He returns to Newnan every few months for special weekends: festivals, Main Street events, and fundraisers- especially those supporting military-related charities. While Kellie-Shae returned to Newnan for several months to help open the shop,

both she and David credit Ronni-Shae as the face of the business and the source of their passion for the healing benefits of CBD oil. Ronni-Shae, 22, suffered from depression and ADHD for several years and hated the side effects of her medication. A nursing student at the time, she became dissatisfied with the pharmaceutical industry and began studying holistic medicine. She found CBD, and stopped her prescriptions: “It just made me feel more like myself,” she said. “Clearer, happier, more focused.” After some research, the whole family was using CBD oil-- even their dogs, who experienced a reduction in joint inflammation and anxiety, David noted. When Happy Life opened, the family felt they had found not only a cure but a calling. “I discover new things it can do every day,” Ronni-Shae said. David agreed, noting that several customers come in for CBD to alleviate cancer-related pain, anxiety, and insomnia. While products labeled as CBD oil are being sold in pharmacies, vape shops, and even gas stations, the team at Happy Life offers a
“Our family only sells the exact CBD brands we take ourselves. For example, I started carrying Green Roads oils because my friend from high school who has Multiple Sclerosis noticed a massive improvement in his symptoms after using that brand,” David said. Ronni-Shae agreed. “We’re not a chain. No one tells us what to carry, and our personal standards are extremely high,” she said. “I am constantly researching, and we specialize in this one product. When you come in, we can take the time to listen to you and recommend a starting dose and regimen”. In fact, education and relationship-building is what the Happy Life team loves not only about CBD, but about their location on the Square. “We don’t make a ton of money, but when people come in and tell us their stories or how our CBD has relieved their pain or anxiety, that’s the big reward,” Ronni-Shae said. The Turbyfields’ eventual goal is for the store to be successful enough for them to return to Coweta for good, but they are willing to be patient. “Of course, we’d love to make a profit,” David said, “but helping people feel better is what we’re really here to do.”

he annual Veterans Day parade will be held in Newnan Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. The parade will begin at the Newnan City Hall and will conclude at Veterans Memorial Plaza. Nathan Thompson has coordinated the parade every year since 2014 to honor his family’s military history. “I have a lot of history of veterans in my family and friends,” he said. According to Thompson, his uncle was almost killed while serving in the Vietnam War. His grandfather served in Vietnam as well, and his father served in the military after 9/11. Thompson said he also has multiple friends currently serving in the military. Participation in the parade is free and open to the public, said Thompson. Anyone who is a part of the parade can join in with a float or as a walker. According to Thompson, the floats may feature patriotic imagery but cannot advocate for any political candidates. “Normally people put what their organization is and then something patriotic,” he said. “The only stipulation is that they cannot campaign for anybody

Evening of faith-based ballet to benefit Coweta Pregnancy Services BY JILL WHITLEY
T
he dancers of Ballet Magnificat regularly spin and leap across the greatest stages in the world. The Mississippi-based professional Christian ballet company has toured Europe, Asia, and South America. In the coming months, they will share their talent and testimony with audiences in Africa and Israel. But on Friday, December 6th, Ballet Magnificat will take the stage at the Wadsworth Auditorium to perform Light Has Come: The Angels’ Story, one of the company’s many original productions. The show is a fundraiser for Coweta Pregnancy Services, a non-profit, faith-based resource center for women or couples facing an unexpected pregnancy. They offer free, confidential pregnancy testing and limited ultrasounds to rule out ectopic or non-viable pregnancies. They also offer material support through an “Earn While you Learn” series of prenatal and parenting classes: Parents who attend the classes consistently are awarded essential baby items like cribs or car seats. Center Director Cindy Coggin-Hughes says Coweta Pregnancy Services is dependent on volunteers, personal donations, the generosity of local churches, and fundraising events like the upcoming ballet to keep its ministry running. Fortunately, the company is more than happy to help: “We’ve danced in London and Paris, but we love coming to small towns. We all have the same dreams and the same love for our families, for humanity. We go anywhere we’re invited. We hope to bless the audience members, hopefully for eternity” said Jiri Voborsky, the company’s Creative Director and Choreographer.
“Benefitting the pregnancy center and the work they do is an amazing bonus on top of that. It’s a win-win situation.” Viborski, who has been with Ballet Magnificat since 1993, says that Light Has Come is his favorite creation to date: “It tells the story of Jesus from the angels’ perspective. We see the birth of Christ, his life, his death, then the resurrection, and suddenly, he’s back.” Voborski claims that the Ballet Magnificat’s faith-based mission isn’t the only thing that makes them unique-- unlike most companies, they travel without a crew. “Each dancer also plays another valuable role in the production,” he explains. “Some sew costumes, others paint sets. We set up before the performance and take things down when we’re done.” He admits the process is hard on their bodies, but the dancers consider it an honor. “Everyone uses their unique talents to make the show what it is, just like we use our bodies to spread the gospel. All the pain and the sweat is worth it.” Another difference between Ballet Magnificat’s productions and more traditional ballets, Viborski emphasizes, is their universal appeal. “Nothing is abstract or hard to understand,” Viborski says. “It’s just as much for men as well as for women and kids-- you don’t need a background in dance to understand it.” Viborski especially encourages women to bring their husbands. “So many times men feel like they have nothing to gain from going to the ballet. In this situation, the show is for everyone,” he says. “There will be no guys in tights. I promise.” To purchase ballet tickets or inquire about donation or volunteer opportunities, please visit Coweta Pregnancy Services’ website at www.coweta-ps.org.
