or a number of years, Odyssey Charter School was Coweta County’s best-kept secret. Now the word is out, and the building is bursting at the seams. Opened in 2001, Odyssey is a tuition-free, public school of choice. Open to all Coweta County students from kindergarten through 8th grade, it offers amenities and opportunities to rival many of the area’s most exclusive private schools: Kindergarteners are assigned their own Chromebooks and given weekly Spanish lessons. Fifth graders play competitive sports. Middle schoolers can take guitar classes, join the robotics team, or perform with the school’s rock band. Public charter schools have to meet the same federal standards as traditional public schools, but

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 Do not run from God. Run to him. Receive His forgiveness. Receive His cleansing. No matter how badly you've sinned, He's eager to forgive and to cleanse you of all unrighteousness. Now this is the confidence that we have in HIM, that if we ask anything according to HIS WILL, HE HEARS US. 1 John 5:14

DAILY TRUTH

Prayer is a privilege. Prayer is powerful. It rearranges our attitude and pulls us into alignment with the will of God.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. May prayer become as BLESSING natural as breathing to you. As you cry out, may you find that all things are possible in the name of Jesus!

have more freedom to determine how those goals are met. Thus, educational decisions are left up to a non-profit board of directors, often made up of parents and other community stakeholders. The result is an innovative, hands-on education in a student-centered environment. Principal Scot Hooper says that the primary key to student success is small class size: “Each classroom from kindergarten to 5th grade contains 20 students, a teacher, and a certified paraprofessional. This ratio allows us to notice things teachers in a larger classroom setting might miss.”

Odyssey uses these observations to deploy what Dr. Hooper calls an “Early Intervention Team” before most parents notice a problem with their own child: “During normal instruction time, our teachers will identify students that are struggling to keep up. Our Intervention team will then come in and work intensely with the student and their family until they are performing at grade level again.” Sometimes, he says, the solution is as simple as referring a child out for a vision screening. But if the problem persists, Odyssey offers instructional coaching and a school psychologist to evaluate the student and create an individualized educational plan. Parents don’t know how Dr. Hooper manages to maintain laser-focus on student success in such an upbeat, familial

environment, but they do know they want to come back- year after year, kid after kid, triggering the switch on the ‘No Vacancy’ sign: "There’s always a waiting list," Hooper says. "Especially for the early grades." So, after a few years of fundraising, the board met with an architect: "The immediate plan is to add six classrooms and some basketball courts. We’ll start by adding an additional kindergarten class next year, then an additional first-grade class after that, and go from there.” “By the time these kindergarteners reach middle school, we’ll exceed capacity again," Hooper predicted. "At that point, I think we’ll need a complete rebuild.” The eventual number of students is a tough figure for Hooper to name: he’d love to welcome every child that wants to

attend Odyssey, but believes very strongly in the school's founding mission: “You’re going to find good schools in this county no matter where you go. But if you’re interested in your child being in a small, family-type environment that cultivates individual thinkers and lifelong learners, we welcome you to visit us." "Come during the school day when the kids are here. You really need to see the interaction and the warmth here-- it’s the most significant component of what we do.” For more information on enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year, or to schedule a tour, please contact school registrar Jill Chester at 770-251-6111, or visit www.odysseycharterschool.net.

Ways to stay safe when taking rideshares

ide-sharing is now one of the easiest and most popular ways of getting where you need to go. However, there’s always a risk when getting in a stranger's car. One of the biggest risks you take when using a ride-sharing service is getting fooled by a fake driver. People can pose as drivers, and unsuspecting riders will get in their car, without verifying it’s their driver. Earlier this year, a woman in South Carolina was found dead after she accidentally got into a car she thought was her Uber, according to www.cnn.com . There are ways to prevent being taken ad-

vantage of, and with these tips from www.safety.com, you can feel sure you are taking a real Uber or Lyft. 1. Wait for your ride inside. Ride-share apps will tell you exactly where your drivers are, so you only need to go out and meet them right when they get there. Request your ride while you’re still inside and remain in a well-lit area where other people are present. 2. Always ask, “What’s my name?” Never get into an Uber, Lyft or any other private car unless the driver can first identify you by name. If they’re your actual driver, they will

There is strength in numbers, and you can split the cost of the trip. 5. Use trip-sharing features. Both Lyft and Uber have in-app trip sharing features that allow you to share live updates on your trip with friends. Hit “Share trip status” in Uber or “Share route” in Lyft. 6. Choose where to sit wisely. Uber advises that it’s safer to sit in the back of the car because it creates two possible exits and increases space between the driver and the passenger. Also, sitting on the passenger side instead of directly behind the driver can help you

keep an eye on both the driver and the road. However, all vehicles and situations are different. If you feel safer in the front seat, a good driver shouldn’t mind if you sit there. Consider it a red flag if a driver tries to make you sit in a certain seat. 7. Do not share personal information. If you need to communicate with the Uber or Lyft driver, you can do so via the app without giving out your contact information, social media handles or last name. Remember that there is no legitimate reason to give your driver a direct payment. If you’re on the way home,

COURTESTY THE VR ZONE AND ARCADE

The VR Zone: Innovative arcade allows players to explore new worlds without leaving Newnan

BY JILL WHITLEY jill@newnan.com

C

oweta teens have an extra reason to be grateful this Thanksgiving season. While Newnan has no shortage of indoor entertainment facilities for families with young children, sullen teenagers have long spent their holiday breaks relegated to their parents’ couches, with only their friends Super Mario and Luigi to keep them company. Fortunately, local business owner Steve Marston learned about virtual reality at a trade show in 2018. “He immediately recognized it as the future of gaming,” said arcade manager Sean Carroll. Marston instantly knew he wanted to bring the concept to Newnan, where families could experience the cutting-edge technology in a quiet, cozy environment that reminded him of the mom-and-pop arcades of his youth. “This isn’t a large, overwhelming des-

tination where you can’t hear yourself think,” Carroll says of the arcade. “It’s a small, family-run place where parents can sit comfortably at the snack bar or take a phone call without having to hover over their kids.” He continues, “We just happen to have the most advanced virtual reality technology in the state of Georgia at the moment.” When players enter the arcade’s HOLOGATE, a compact gaming arena with room for up to four players, they are immediately transported to a new world: “When you put the headset on, you leave here,” Carroll says. It’s easy to see how one can get lost in the game. In addition to the headset, each player uses controllers equipped with sensors and gyroscopes to simulate movement within the game setting, and a haptic vest, which provides both touch

and motion sensory input during play. “If you’re facing away from another player when they shoot you, you’re going to feel the hit from behind, just like you would in real life, explains Carroll. The arcade’s lineup is extensive and includes something for everyone: Teens and adults will enjoy more mature offerings like Zombyte, while the whole family can play games like Angry Birds, and Groove Guardians- a game Carroll describes as “a giant virtual reality dance party”. Busting a move isn’t the only way to work up a sweat at VR Zone: “We have a submarine escape game coming out soon, and you really have to run all over the room for that one,” Carroll says. “It involves a lot of cooperation. You’re trying to escape and valves are leaking and things are exploding and you have to make repairs while you’re mov-

ing.” In fact, one of the things Carroll loves most about the VR gaming experience is that it often requires teamwork: “It really draws kids out of their homes and into a community to let out their competitive spirit”. Carroll said the arcade plans to eventually host tournaments and other events in the future. “With the growing popularity of e-sports and game streaming platforms, we want to provide a place where the gaming community can come together and engage in a sporting-fan type of experience.” The VR Zone and Arcade, located at 1690 Highway 34 East in Newnan, can also host special events and birthday parties. For pricing and packages, please call (678) 673-6200, or visit the arcade’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook. com/thevrzonenewnan
