oy Scout Troop 41 of First United Methodist Church began their annual Christmas tree sales next to Sprayberry’s BBQ on Hwy. 29 Friday.

They will sell every day beginning Nov. 29 until they run out, which Terrell said only took about two weeks last year.

Scouts will be selling trees Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sundays from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Monday through Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Trees range in price from $45 to over $100.

“The boys really enjoy coming out here and doing it. It’s a lot of fun,” Scott Zachry said.

Whenever they are open, the scouts will be assisting customers, with some help from parent volunteers.

“I think this helps them understand what it means to sell something and about customer service,” Terrell said.

The troop buys the trees from Christmas Tree Hill Farm in North Carolina, and Southwire offers to ship them for free every year.

Newnan Utilities donates the power, and Sprayberry’s BBQ lets them use their property for free, Terrell said.

The donations allow most of the money to go back to the troop, and Terrell said the tree sales are their biggest fundraiser of the year.

“We were out here when it snowed a couple of years ago, and my son and I still talk about that. We all have so many memories,” Zachry said.

With money from the sales, they can help pay for activities and trips for the scouts. The fundraiser also allows the troop to purchase needed training materials and badges.

Due to fundraising, a couple of scouts will be taking a trip in July to Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico.

Wednesday outreach about much more than food

H

undreds of people turned out for an early Thanksgiving meal and a bounty of clothing, household items, and food at the fourth annual Ignite the Fire Thanksgiving Outreach, held Wednesday at Winston Dowdell Academy.

Members of participating churches donated clothing, shoes and dishes, along with canned goods and cleaning products available for all who needed them. Volunteers manned stations to give out items, and the clothing was arranged to make shopping easier.

There were also giveaways of small household appliances like space heaters and blenders, said Debra Harris of Ignite the Fire and Kingdom Connected Outreach Ministries International.

“It was a beautiful thing to see,” said Edward Brooks, pastor of China Grove Community Church in Turin. People were lined up before serving began, and there was a constant flow of people, he said.

Brooks said the people who donated items for the giveaway had made sure to bring in quality items that people could use. “They really did a wonderful job, with really nice items,” he said. Churches also donated the cleaning products. Volunteers were there four hours early to get set up, he said.

“The volunteers did a wonderful job,” Brooks said.

The weather was nice Wednesday and many people were able to walk to the school to take part in the event.

Tyucha Collins of China Grove loves volunteering at the event. “It’s a good experience, and a different experience every year,” she said.

“It’s fun helping people,” said Tyler Lathon, who was helping man the canned goods table.

DreShaun Parker, who also manned the canned goods table, said he loved seeing the smiles on people’s faces.

“It’s great,” said Matthew Smith, who was arranging clothing with his wife, Shushura. “It makes a difference.”

The annual event is an opportunity for any

church to come in and participate, Harris said, even if the church doesn’t want to be a part of the Summit Ministry, a group of churches in Coweta and Troup counties. Ignite the Fire is part of the Summit Ministry and is a movement to unite people of God across racial, ethnical and cultural lines.

“This is a church community effort,” she said. “We are trying to promote unity in the community.”

Participating organizations are Kingdom Connected, China Grove, Newnan City Church, Foundation Christian Church, Harvest Outreach, Greater Love Kingdom Ministries, Girls of Faith at Madras Middle School, Bridging the Gap and Prevailing Grace Ministries.
