‘Book Club with Lola’ encourages young readers BY LAUREL HUSTER laurel@newnan.com

ome young readers have a tough time reading out loud, and the Newnan Carnegie Library is hoping to help with the assistance of a furry friend. Lola, an 8-year-old Great Pyrenees, and her owner Pam Kemp visit the Carnegie Library in downtown Newnan twice a month. Children that are elementary through middle school age can read to her for 15 minutes to help improve their reading skills. This week, Madelynn Parkman came to read a new book she got for Christmas to Lola. Her mom, Elizabeth Parkman, proudly announced that Madelynn is now reading on a second-grade reading level. Madelynn is in the first grade at Welch Elementary School. Before she started

reading to Lola this year, she was reading on a kindergarten reading level, her mom said. “This is why we do this, hearing that made my day,” Kemp said. While Lola is certainly the star of the show, it's her owner who uses this opportunity to give back. “As a kid, I had reading issues, and they didn’t have things like this when I was growing up,” Kemp said. “I always wanted to give back because somebody took the time to help me learn to read.” Kemp rescued Lola five years ago after animal control found her walking on the side of the road in Meriwether County. Although the occasional child has confused her for a polar bear, she is a gentle giant. When Kemp adopted Lola, she knew that she would make a great therapy dog because of her calm spirit. She tested out how Lola reacted around kids and found that Lola loves them. To start the therapy training process, Kemp put Lola through obedience school. termountain Therapy Animals R.E.A.D. Program. Research shows that reading to dogs can help children who have reading issues, or get nervous reading in front of people. The Animals & Society Institute found that students who read to dogs had higher scores on oral reading fluency assessments than students who didn’t. “It’s a great concept because dogs are so nonjudgemental,” Kemp said. “The kids love reading to her because she’s so comfortable around them that she usually falls asleep.” Kemp said she doesn’t correct the reader, and only helps them if they ask for it. She said she’s seen readers lose their stutter or anxiety while reading to Lola, partly because they know she won’t correct them if they miss a word or pronounce it wrong. “It’s a great thing to see kids who come in every week grow in their reading abilities,” Carnegie Director Susan Crutchfield said. “Book Club with Lola” is the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. Readers can sign up for a 15-minute time slot from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Registration is required by calling the library at 770-683-1347 .

O

ne rainy day did not stop people from lining the streets of downtown Newnan on Saturday to watch the 33rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade. Cliff Fisher and Monique Bentley of the Coweta County African American Alliance served as grand marshals for the

parade, whose theme was "Honoring the Dream, through Education, Service, Commitment and Love." The parade and commemorative service are sponsored every year by Newnan Chapter 483, Order of the Eastern Star. Proceeds from the parade benefit the organization’s scholarship fund.
