bit o’ Scotland was in Coweta for the annual Newnan Burns Weekend, which celebrates Newnan and Coweta’s sister city and sister county relationship with Ayr and Ayrshire in Scotland. This is the fifth annual Newnan Burns Weekend. It is held each year around the birthday of famed Scottish poet Robert Burns. Every year, the weekend features a mix of events, and this year events ranged from visits to schools to a Sunday Kirking of the Tartans service at Newnan Presbyterian Church. "The Burns weekend offered an event for everyone,” said Bette Hickman, who was instrumental in starting the sister city relationship with Ayr. Burns, most famous for writ-
ing “Auld Lang Syne,” “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose" and for the phrase “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” from his poem “To a Mouse,” was born in Ayrshire, and is often called the national poet of Scotland. Friday morning, the Piper Jones Band visited Elm Street and Ruth Hill elementary schools and O.P. Evans Middle School for performances, and Friday afternoon they played a free concert for senior citizens at the Wadsworth Auditorium. There were between 150 and 200 people at the concert, and some senior citizen centers brought van loads of concert-goers, said Larisa Scott, event director.

CITY OF NEWNAN / OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS Angelo T. Robinson shows off his art on display at the City Manager’s Office at Newnan City Hall.
NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com
T
he Newnan-Coweta Art Association selected Angelo T. Robinson as its Artist of the Month for February. Robinson’s art will be featured in the City Manager’s Office at Newnan City Hall through the end of the month. Each month, a local artist is selected Artist of the Month. The city collaborates with the Newnan-Coweta Art Association and local art galleries on the project. Robinson is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works out of Senoia. A self-taught artist, he joined the U.S. Army in 1992, where he served 10 years active duty and four years in the Naval Reserves as a Seabee. Traveling to locales such as Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece, Africa, France, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Egypt, the Virgin Islands, Israel and the United Arab Emirates greatly influenced his approach to art. The vibrancy, diverse richness and simple beauty of the cultures he experienced are shown throughout his work. His work exudes a level spiritually and an organic connection with the human condition. This reflects his experiences
growing up as the son and grandson of preachers. Robinson’s creations invite the viewer to participate in a physical, mental or spiritual dialogue with what they experience. Deep vibrant abstracts, colorful mixed-media portraits and majestic sports pieces are brought to life using vivid colors and bold compositions. Robinson has participated in juried group shows such as Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair, as well as solo shows in Charleston, S.C.; Burlington, N.C.; San Bruno, Calif.; and many cities across his home state of Georgia. He continues to participate in select exhibitions as well as producing his own shows each year. He creates commissioned pieces for residential and corporate clients. The Newnan-Coweta Art Association’s general meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month (from August through May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7 pm. An art demonstration is presented each month, and visitors and new members are always welcome.

CCSO earthquake relief outreach prepares to deliver supplies to Puerto Rico
BY CLAY NEELY clay@newnan.com
A
local relief effort for victims of the recent earthquake in Puerto Rico has exceeded expectations, organizers say. Lt. Edwin Rivera at the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office helped organize the relief outreach – requesting items including tents, sleeping bags, blankets, flashlights, batteries, tarps, first aid kids, baby and adult diapers, toothpaste, toothbrushes and hand sanitizer. Last weekend, a drop off for the requested items was scheduled at Born Again Ministries. At the end of the day, Rivera said the effort collected 148 boxes of supplies from donations made not only in Coweta, but from across the state. Siemens Energy donated 20 tents and sleeping bags while another Atlanta pharmaceutical company donated 10 boxes of intravenous needles, tubes and dispensers. One teacher from Clayton County encouraged students to collect items, which were brought over last weekend to the drop off. In the end, nearly 3,000 pounds of supplies, not including the 20 pallets of water donated by Niagara Bottling, will now make their way to Puerto Rico and Rivera will help accompany the items to the island later this week. “We did so much better than expected,” Rivera said. “Everything we asked for, we got.” Upon arriving in Puerto Rico, several local churches have volunteered to help with lodg-

Our goal is to touch the communities and get them to the right people."
Today's Blessing May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. With a little help from E.J. Jones of the Piper Jones Band, guests at Saturday night’s event tried some Scottish country dancing.
BURNS WEEKEND From page 1
“I think people always have a good time, and this year the band was able to reach more people than ever,” Scott said. This was the second year in a row that the Piper Jones Band has played the Newnan Burns Weekend. It’s the first time a band has returned for a second round, Scott said. Saturday night’s main event featured a concert, a “tartan and tweed” fashion show, dancing, singing and a reading of Burns’ poetry. The fashion show has been coordinated by Emily Westergreen for the past three years and has been one of the most popular parts of the weekend’s events, Scott said. “The band was fantastic. I loved the dancing,” said Phyllis Graham, chairwoman of the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission. Sunday’s Kirking of the Tartans is a church service that pays homage to ancestry and the Scottish roots of the Presbyterian church. The service was all-inclusive with more than Scottish items, and people could bring
anything that reminded them of their family heritage, Scott said. Plaid attire was all over the church, and the pastor even wore a clergy kilt. There was also a reading for the 23rd Psalm with a Scottish flair. “The bagpipes played and the banners of the clans were marched down the aisle of this beautiful house of God,” said Hickman. “‘Auld Lang Syne’ is not forgotten as we celebrated our Sister City Ayr and the birthplace of Robert Burns,” she said. The event is a collaboration of the Order of the Tartan, based in LaGrange, the Newnan Cultural Arts Commissioner, the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation, and Michael and Larisa Scott. “It’s been great. We’ve gotten a lot of partners with all the nonprofits and we’re hoping to possibly engage more people with it,” said Scott. Click here for or a full gallery of images from this event
