African Children’s Choir to perform two shows in March BY LAUREL HUSTER laurel@newnan.com
T
he African Children’s Choir will be visiting Newnan in March as part of their 51st choir tour since their founding in 1984. Nineteen children from Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa and Kenya will present their new program, “Just As I Am.” Choir Manager Tina Sipp said the program will feature children's songs, traditional spirituals and gospel favorites. Sipp said this will be the first time any of the 19 children have gone on tour. She said they are very excited to visit the U.S. The choir will perform across the South and Northeast and then travel to the United Kingdom to tour for a month. The African Children’s Choir

will perform twice on Sunday, March 8, in Newnan. The first performance will be at Trinity Fellowship Assembly, 8817 Highway 54 W, Sharpsburg at 10:30 a.m.; the second performance will be at the Wadsworth Auditorium in Newnan, hosted by Calvary Chapel Newnan, at 6:30 p.m. There are no tickets for the performances, but donations will be collected to support the African Children’s Choir programs such as education, care and relief and development. Music for Life, the parent organization for The African Children's Choir, works in the African countries of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa. MFL has educated over 52,000 children and impacted the lives of over 100,000 people through its relief and development programs during its history, according to a press release.
The African Children’s Choir is composed of African children, ages 7 to 10 years old. Many have lost one or both parents through the devastation of war, famine and disease. The primary goal of the choir is to raise awareness of the needs of destitute and orphaned children in Africa, and to raise funds for continued development and support of the African Children’s Choir Programs, according to the release. The African Children's Choir has had the privilege to perform before presidents and heads of state, and they performed for the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, for her diamond jubilee. The Choir has also had the honor of singing alongside artists such as Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, Michael W. Smith and other performers.

oweta County Firefighter Jessica Kessinger was honored for saving a life while off-duty. Piedmont Newnan Hospital honors a first responder each month who goes above and beyond the call of duty for
the hospital’s First Friday Heroes events. Kessinger was not only a first responder, but also a witness to a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a Ford F-150 truck on Sept. 25. Kessinger had just finished a 24-hour shift and was headed to Atlanta to board a plane for a long-anticipated vacation when she witnessed the wreck. The motorcyclist was thrown into the air, and his helmet landed approximately 20 feet
from his body. Kessinger immediately stopped her car to help the injured man, who was not breathing. Kessinger could not find a pulse, so she started CPR and opened his airway. The motorcyclist suffered multi-system trauma, including multiple broken bones and other severe injuries. When emergency crews arrived on the scene, Kessinger assisted them until Air Life arrived and flew him to Atlanta.
The 25-year-old motorcyclist survived, was discharged from the hospital Oct. 11, and is expected to fully recover from his injuries, according to Vicki Kaiser, executive director of oncology, support services and community affairs at PNH. “She is a role model and always willing to go the extra mile for her fellow firefighters and EMTs,” Kaiser said. “Her quick, selfless actions saved this young man’s life that day.”

T
he Senoia Area Historical Society is planning to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its museum by creating an exhibit called
“The Perfect 10.” Museum Director Maureen Schuyler said the exhibit will feature collector’s items in groups of 10. So far, the exhibit will have 10 duck calls, 10 cat teapots, 10 vintage hankies, 10 little chairs, 10 Winston Churchill
items and several other groups of collector’s items. Schuyler said the museum always puts together a fun exhibit in February, and this year the organization wanted to pay homage to the museum's anniversary. Past exhibits have included vintage
valentines, vintage jewelry, Coca-Cola memorabilia and quilts. The collector’s items will be on display at the museum at 6 Couch St., Senoia, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 15, 21, 22, 28

Visitors will be able to vote on the collection they like best, and one will be named “The Perfect 10.” Although the Historical Society had been around since 1977, the museum wasn’t opened until 2010. The Historical Society purchased the Carmichael House in 1990 and used the building for meetings. The home was built in 1870 and is one of the oldest buildings in Senoia. Schuyler said the goal of the Historical Society was always to open a museum. Over the years, they began collecting artifacts and hosting fundraisers to reach that goal. Schuyler, who came on as the museum director in 2009, said the building was in disrepair and required a lot of work before it was ready to be opened as the museum. “It took a lot of time and money and volunteers to get it to where it is today,” she said. Schuyler said her vision was always to be able to share the stories that have made Senoia the town it is now. The museum is organized chronologically, starting with Creek Indian Chief William McIntosh in the 1800s and ending with the filming industry in Senoia now. “I always tell people it’s such a small town with such a big history,” she said. Schuyler said the Historical Society’s sole purpose is to “preserve and promote” Senoia’s history. The museum has been able to do that for both Senoia and Coweta County residents, and out of town visitors. The museum has had visitors from all over the world stop in, many of whom are interested in learning about where “The Walking Dead” is filmed. Schuyler said they’ve had visitors from many European countries, and countries such as
China and Japan. “I’ve enjoyed witnessing the growth from where we started, and being involved with the people responsible for the growth has been so rewarding,” Schuyler said. She said she hopes that in the next 10 years, the museum will be able to open for the public more. Currently, it is only open on Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. “The museum is a very important part of Senoia and its history. Hopefully, we will be around for the next 10 years and more,” Historical Society President Dennis Sanford said. oe and Jessie Tallant, who currently live in Sharpsburg, will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary this August. Although they didn’t meet until 1998, they were both treated for childhood cancer at the same hospital in 1995. The Tallants were both diagnosed with cancer in February 1995, Jessie with leukemia and Joe with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone and soft tissue cancer. Jessie said they never met while they were both receiving treatment, but were introduced to each other several years later at camp. They both attended Camp Sunshine, a camp in Georgia for children who have cancer or have been treated for cancer. Both Joe and Jessie love the outdoors, and Jessie said they kept running into each other on the archery or skeet-shooting fields. They became friends at camp, but never dated. When they graduated high school, they were both too old to attend Camp Sunshine. However, their paths crossed again when they both attended the University of West Georgia. Jessie said they hung out while they were both in college, but still didn’t date. After college, Joe moved home to Peachtree City. Jessie had friends who lived in Newnan, and she loved the area so much she decided to buy a house here. After she had lived here a while, she received a surprise Facebook message from Joe. “I hadn’t seen Joe in years, but he must have noticed that I’d moved nearby,” Jessie said. “He messaged me and said, ‘What are you doing in Newnan?’” They started hanging out again and were soon dating. After nine months, they were engaged, and nine months after that, they were married.
Even though they had both been cancer-free for many years, one of the long-term effects of cancer treatment is fertility issues. Jessie said they didn’t think they could become pregnant, and they chose to do embryo adoption to have a child. “I told the doctor I wanted twins, a boy and a girl, and he told me that was pretty much impossible,” Jessie said. Now they have three-year-old twins, a boy and a girl. In order to give back, the Tallants have volunteered and helped raise money for the nonprofit CURE Childhood Cancer. CURE is working to cure childhood cancer through funding targeted research while supporting patients and their families, according to www.curechildhoodcancer.org . Joe’s dad was on the board of CURE while Joe was going through treatment. Joe and Jessie have been involved with CURE’s annual golf tournament in Covington, Ga. Jessie also works for Vonage as part of their social responsibility team, which chose CURE as one of the organizations the company supports. The team has participated in a snack bag program, where they collect snacks for families and patients who are undergoing treatment in the hospital. “CURE is very close to our heart, and we’re both very involved in Camp Sunshine still as well,” Jessie said. Before they had kids, Joe and Jessie would volunteer for a week at Camp Sunshine as counselors. Now, they volunteer when they can. “Cancer isn’t fair and has left a footprint on everyone involved. But if it wasn’t for cancer, I wouldn’t have met Joe or had the twins,” Jessie added. “This isn’t the story either of us would have written for our lives, but it’s turning out to be a good one.”
