staff meeting turned into a surprise celebration as Dr. Chase Puckett of Newnan High School learned Wednesday he is the 2020 Georgia Principal of the Year. Puckett was selected from a large pool of candidates by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals (GASSP), which annually honors a high school principal who excels in educational leadership, resolving complex problems, developing self and others, and community service. Current and former Coweta County School System officials and members of the Coweta County Board of Education accompanied Art Wheaton of GASSP into the NHS cafeteria, where Wheaton interrupted the meeting to notify Puckett of the honor.

“Folks, we’re here for a very, very special announcement,” Wheaton told the crowd. “We’re proud to announce that this young man right here is your state High School Principal of the Year.” Superintendent Steve Barker, a former principal at Newnan High, said the honor is well deserved. “I have a high level of expectation for folks, and I expect excellence,” Barker said Wednesday. “Chase has answered the bell every time. Every time, he steps up and takes it to the next level.” Doug Moore was principal of Newnan High when Puckett became an assistant principal there. Puckett originally joined the Coweta County School System as an

assistant principal at Madras Middle School. “I can’t take credit for him – (Madras Principal) Lorraine Johnson brought him to Coweta,” Moore said during the celebration. “I just stole him as quick as I could.” As one of six Principal of the Year finalists, Puckett had the opportunity to talk to the GASSP selection committee about Newnan High School’s accomplishments, including its student ambassador program and how his staff has worked to develop school culture and student leadership opportunities. Puckett said he also stressed how the school builds teacher leadership and collaborative practices to meet school improvement goals. Puckett gave his staff credit for the honor. “When I got to share with GASSP, I got to talk about you,” he told staff members during the celebration. “I got to talk about how hard y’all work. The job’s tough but you love kids and you show up every day. This isn’t about me, it’s about you. Thank you. Thank you.” Newnan High School has seen significant gains in graduation rate and student academic achievement in recent years, and was recognized as a 2019 Breakout High School by GASSP last year.

Puckett has been principal at NHS since 2013 and is in his 14th year in the Coweta County School System, where he started out as an assistant principal at Madras Middle School. His career began in Screven County Schools, where Puckett taught on the middle and high school levels. Puckett was Georgia’s 2005 Georgia Teacher of the Year, and he says he’s still a teacher at heart. “I hope to never forget how hard the teaching profession is and how important every student walking through the door is,” he told The Newnan Times-Herald in a January interview. Puckett said Wednesday’s announcement caught him off guard. “It was a lot of fun for my staff to surprise me like that,” he said. “When you work with a staff that works so hard, anything we can do to celebrate the school and school system is welcome. I was very humbled to see so many teachers, board members and system staff there.” As Georgia Principal of the Year, Puckett will travel to Washington, D.C. as the state’s candidate for National High School Principal of the Year. The Principal of the Year recognition program is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Alan Jackson celebrates Valentine’s Day with sold-out Atlanta concert BY CLAY NEELY clay@newnan.com

I

t was a sweet Georgia homecoming for Alan Jackson, who showcased a career of No. 1 hits and some deeper cuts for a sold-out State Farm Arena audience on Valentine’s Day. The 61-year-old country star greeted his audience with a trademark smile and took his place center stage where he delivered a memorable 100-minute set. Jackson's first reference to Newnan was met with roaring approval among the crowd as he shared a few memories about growing up in his hometown, which ultimately became the inspiration for many of his biggest hits. A large video screen projected images from his original music videos for each song, reminding the audience just how long Jackson has been in the game. Following a steady run of top hits, Jackson reached into the vault for Valentine’s, dedicating “I’d Love You All Over Again” to his wife Denise, which he claimed was only rehearsed several hours ago on the bus. Along with a number of autobiographical songs, another connection to Jackson’s hometown was his cover of “Seven Bridges,” originally written by songwriter Steve Young, who was born in Newnan. Young's song would ultimately be covered by a number of musicians, most notably The Eagles' version in 1980, along with Jackson’s first band, the Dixie Steel Band. An audience member shouted a request for Jackson’s “Dogriver Blues,” which seemed to amuse Jackson. “Man, I love that song, but I can’t even remember the words, it’s been so long,” he said, referencing the 1990 track. “I wrote that song about crossing that river going into Whitesburg heading towards Carrollton back when I went to college for about 30 minutes." Jackson also referenced his father — Daddy Gene — who served as the inspiration for his hit single “Drive," which was inspired by memories of his late father, who won a wooden radio at the Pepsi plant he worked at in Newnan. That radio served as a source of musical inspiration for Jackson growing up, and it was eventually inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Jackson closed out his set with one chart-topping hit after the next, reminding us he’s certainly not too old to rock the jukebox, and that we're proud to also live where he “comes from.”

Carnegie Crochet Club makes hats for the homeless NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com

T

he Carnegie Crochet Club recently made and donated over 100 hats for local nonprofit Bridging the Gap. With temperatures dropping, Carnegie Children’s Librarian, Teri Anderson, noticed many of the homeless in the area without proper protection from the cold. Anderson asked the Carnegie Crochet

Club to help her with making warm, handmade hats for the homeless in the community, according to a press release. The Carnegie Crochet Club, led by Judy Davenport, has met for over seven years. Many participants learned how to crochet during weekly meetings. Now they have over 20 regular members, and they quickly took on the task of

crocheting a variety of hats. “Outreach and helping our community are important goals of the Carnegie. This is what a community is all about — seeing a problem and working together to help solve it,” said Carnegie Adult Programmer, Brittany Partington. The Carnegie Crochet Club meets upstairs at the Newnan Carnegie Library

every Monday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Instructor Judy Davenport teaches the basics and will help participants through any trouble spots. New members are always welcome and can drop in any time during the meeting. For more information, call 770-6831347.
