Not just a pizza place, but an experience f you’re in the market for fresh, authentic Italian pizza, look no further than Positano Pizza Napoleta-

Located in Ashley Park, the restaurant serves pizzas, salads, gelato, beer and wine, espresso and Nonna-approved desserts. A brand-new second location at The Avenue in Peachtree City also boasts a full bar featuring premium Italian wines, beer and spirits. Pizza as we know it was invented in Naples in the 18th century. Ever since then, this iconic Neapolitan dish traveled the world and today many cul-

tures have their own adaptation of it. In the US, New York pizza and Chicago pizza are different interpretations of the first pizza created in Naples. A key reason for these different styles is that Neapolitan pizza, in its original state, is very hard to replicate. You need a very specific skill set, special ovens, and fresh ingredients from the Naples area. That’s the authenticity that Positano Pizza brings to the Newnan community. Positano Pizza uses two Acunto wood-fired ovens hand-built in Naples, and the

Reese Parent of the Year for Boys and Girls Clubs

BY LAUREL HUSTER laurel@newnan.com

D

ominique Reese was named Parent of the Year for the local Boys and Girls Clubs at the organization’s annual Oscar Night fundraiser. The organization serves around 200 children in Coweta County in two different locations – the Howard Warner Boys & Girls Club at 55 Savannah St. and the Newnan / Coweta Boys & Girls Club at 72 Wesley St. Reese said her two kids Stephen, 9, and Angelique, 7, have attended both programs for over two years. She said they usually attend Howard Warner during the summer, and the Newnan/Coweta club during the school year. Reese works for the Housing Authority and has helped develop a partnership between the authority and the Boys and Girls Clubs. She has also helped volunteer for the club's annual fall festival and helps plan the Red Ribbon Week at the Howard-Warner Club. Lauren Odom, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs, said that Reese has gone above and beyond for the clubs. “We base the Parent of the Year selection off of parent engagement and support. We recognize one parent who doesn’t just help with activities, but offers to help in any way that they can,” Odom said. “Dominique has been that parent.” Reese said she had asked Odom how she could get tickets to the event, just because she wanted to go. Odom said the same day Reese asked her about tickets Odom was trying to figure out how to get her to come to the event without letting her know about the award. “Last year, I missed the deadline for ticket purchases, and I saw a post from Lauren about the gala this year, and I asked her if I could get some tickets,” Reese said. Odom told her she could put her name

When Reese attended the event, she didn’t know the Parent of the Year award existed. “As I was listening to Ginger Queener talk about the Parent of the Year award, she mentioned that the recipient had children who attended both programs and that they work for the Housing Authority,” Reese said. Reese said she realized they were describing her and was shocked to receive the award. “I’m very proud and humbled to have been selected,” she said. “I’m very thankful to Lauren as well.”

POSITANO PIZZA From page 1 it – the leavening, the maturation, how much yeast,” Gjuka said. “We don’t waste anything. We can make 100 pizzas with only a gram and a half to two grams of yeast because we use heat and we use time to come to the right maturation for the dough.” That means coming into the restaurant two hours early to fire up the ovens and regulate the heat. The bricks inside are made from the ashes of Mt. Vesuvius and can generate heat up to 1,000 degrees. At dinnertime, the ovens are maintained at 900-950 degrees and the pizzas take just 90 seconds to bake. The delicious, slightly charred crust is finished in the ovens, but it starts with superfine, 00 flour milled at a 500-yearold mill. Because most of the gluten “falls off ” during the milling process, Posita-

no’s delicious pizza can even be enjoyed by some gluten-sensitive customers. “It’s not gluten-free, so it’s not for people who have celiac disease,” Gjuka said. “But if you’re gluten-sensitive, please do have it.” Everything from the flour to the worldclass San Marzano tomatoes, sausage and olive oil are all carefully selected to give customers a true Neapolitan pizza experience, straight from the Positano cliffs along the Amalfi Coast. Meats and cheeses GMO-free, and the mozzarella di bufala (buffalo mozzarella) makes the pizza truly special. “I guarantee you we are the only people in Georgia to serve buffalo mozzarella,” Gjuka said. “We use that in every pizza. A buffalo doesn’t give a lot of milk, so it’s more fatty but it’s zero cholesterol. The cholesterol kills you but the fat never kills you. It’s amazing and it also tastes very good.” The only thing the restaurant doesn’t import is its arugula, spring mix and oth-

er fresh produce. “We work with the local community in Georgia to get the fresh produce that we serve,” Gjuka said. The restaurant features industrial mid-century decor with hints of Italian design. Pizzas and salads are made fresh in front of customers. Community-style seating – where diners sit wherever space is available at the restaurant’s long tables – offers the opportunity to make friends out of strangers while enjoying a delicious meal, Italian music and a great view of the pizza makers as they work their magic. “The ovens and the pizza-making are the star and the entertainment,” Gjuka said. Simple and delicious, Positano pizza reflects the true tastes of Italy. The warm, welcoming atmosphere and personal attention elevates it to something more. “We are a pizza place, but not just a pizza place,” Gjuka said.

orthgate High School student Luke Hanks is Coweta County’s 2020 STAR Student. Hanks was recognized at the 2020 Coweta County STAR Student and Teacher luncheon Friday, along with the STAR Students and Teachers from six Coweta County public and private high schools. Thomas Crossroads Elementary gifted teacher Pamela Hendrix was chosen as Hanks’s STAR Teacher and shares the county-wide honor with him. “She’s the reason I love learning. She instilled in me my appreciation for knowledge, and I’m really grateful for her influence in my life,” Hanks said. The Newnan Rotary Club hosts the annual luncheon, where in addition to Hanks and Hendrix, these students and teachers were recognized this year:

Central Christian School: STAR Student Nathan Finley and STAR Teacher Justin Stephens (Honors U.S. History teacher, Central Christian School). East Coweta High School: STAR Student Josh White and STAR Teacher Amanda Bowles (AP Calculus teacher, East Coweta High School). The Heritage School: STAR Student Sovi Wellons and STAR Teacher Emily Camp (AP Biology teacher, the Heritage School). Newnan High School: STAR Student Zach Quick and STAR Teacher Jason Weidert (AP European History teacher, Newnan High School). Trinity Christian School: STAR Student John Geter and STAR

Teacher Jennifer Rinkenberger (AP Calculus teacher, Trinity Christian School). Hanks and Hendrix will attend the region 3B STAR Student honors on March 24 at the Nixon Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Newnan. As Coweta’s winner, Hanks is a candidate for regional STAR Student.

Hanks is Northgate’s 2020 Valedictorian and plans on attending Georgia Tech after graduation. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition Program recognizes top academic students in Georgia high schools each year at the school, county, regional and state levels. To be named STAR Student, a high school senior must record the highest score in his or her school in one sitting on the Scholastic Assessment

Test, taken through the November test date of their senior year. A STAR Student must also be in the top 10 percent, or among the top 10 students in his or her class, based on grade point average. STAR Students are asked to honor the educator who most influenced their academic achievement by naming him or her STAR Teacher. All six STAR Teachers introduced the Rotary members to their students at Friday’s program, citing their scholarship, high character, and extracurricular and civic accomplishments. The Newnan Rotary Club serves as the local sponsor for the statewide STAR program, which is organized by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education.

r. Chad Davidson, Director of the School of the Arts at the University of West Georgia-Newnan recently shared background details about the art installation “Seeing Newnan” with the Kiwanis Club of Coweta County. The installation features 17 large-scale photographic portraits by Mary Beth Meehan, a Pulitzer Prize nominated photojournalist. In 2016, Meehan was invited by Newnan ArtRez to serve as Artist in Residence in Newnan. After the first portraits were installed, UWG-N commissioned more portraits. She spent the next two years gaining an understanding of the history and culture of Newnan/Coweta County and photographing local citizens. After obtaining permission from building owners, the high-resolution color portrait banners, made of durable vinyl, were installed in Newnan’s downtown in Spring 2019. The installation will be in place for about one year. Dr. Davidson used a short video to describe many of the banners. To become more informed about those portrayed and their background stories, Davidson encouraged Kiwanians to check westga.edu/sota The Kiwanis Club of Coweta County meets at noon on the second and fourth Thursdays at Newnan Country Club and welcomes visitors.
