398 children served free meals at Coweta schools BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com
C
oweta County Schools may be closed, but nearly 400 children still received school breakfasts and lunches Tuesday. “We were ecstatic to be able to reach that many people in our community,” said Keshia Williams, the Coweta County School System’s director of school nutrition. It was the first day of an effort to make sure students who may depend on school meals during the week also have access to those meals while schools are closed because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Free meals are available each weekday from 11 a.m. to noon at seven sites around Coweta County for the duration of the school closure. Meal distribution operates as a drive-through system, where drivers remain in their vehicles and receive bags containing a breakfast and a lunch for each child present in the vehicle. No food is consumed on-site. The meals are provided for children ages 18 and under, or 21 and under for youths with special needs. Any child present at any site will be served,

Outreach organizations meet to discuss collaboration
PHOTO BY REBECCA LEFTWICH Kelli Yeager-Nelson, executive director of Bridging the Gap, speaks with representatives of local food pantries, service agencies and organizations during a Friday meeting at Bridging the Gap.
BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com
A
meeting to discuss the potential impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable local residents has resulted in a coalition focused on feeding and caring for those residents during the pandemic.
Representatives from several area food pantries, service agencies and faith organizations gathered Friday at Bridging the Gap to discuss how they might pool their resources to ensure continuity of services for those they serve. “It’s a discussion about what each organization is doing and how we can support one another with our clients,” said Kelli Yeager-Nelson, executive director
of Bridging the Gap, who said agencies anticipate their clients needing additional food and support as schools, businesses and even governmental agencies are shutting down. Those attending the meeting at Bridging the Gap were screened for any symptoms of illness, including having their temperatures taken. It was part of a new protocol for the outreach ministry, which served 44,000 clients last year. Children 17 and under make up 42 percent of those served by Bridging the Gap, Yeager-Nelson said. Many of those children rely on school meals, and Coweta County School System Nutrition Director Keshia Williams announced at the meeting that the school system plans to begin a free meal program for children 18 and under next week. Local food pantries, service agencies and faith organizations plan to continue working together to get necessary services to the people who need them. To serve a wider population, the coalition – which tracks its efforts and spreads the word using #missionfeedcoweta on social media – has dedicated multiple donation drop-off and food distribution locations throughout the county. Food needs include: canned meals (ravioli, soup, etc.); canned meats; canned fruit; peanut butter and jelly; shelf-stable milk; rice, pasta and dried beans; spaghetti sauce; individual breakfast and snack items; cereal and granola; small drinks (water, Gatorade, juice) and drink flavor packs. Non-food needs include: feminine hygiene products, adult protective underwear; infant formula; diapers; toothpaste; deodorant; and bags (grocery, reusable or paper).

harter and Comcast have announced that they will help families receive free WiFi access during the COVID-19 health crisis. Beginning March 16 Charter will offer the following for 60 days: •
Charter will offer free Spectrum broadband and WiFi access for 60 days to households with K-12 or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. Charter will continue to offer Spectrum Internet Assist, a highspeed broadband program to eligible low-income households delivering speeds of 30 Mbps. Charter will open its WiFi hotspots across our footprint for public use.
“As the country works collaboratively to contain this pandemic, broadband internet access will be increasingly essential to ensuring that people across the country are able to learn and work remotely, that businesses can continue to serve customers, and that Americans stay connected and engaged with family and friends,” Charter stated in a release
March 13. Comcast also made a statement on March 13 that they would help people receive internet access as more schools suspend classes, and companies encourage employees to work from home. “During this extraordinary time, it is vital that as many Americans as possible stay connected to the internet – for education, work and personal health reasons,” said Dave Watson, Comcast CEO in the statement. “Our employees also live and work in virtually every community we serve, and we all share the same belief that it’s our company’s responsibility to step up and help out.” Comcast is implementing the following

Backpack Buddies will deliver through school meal program BY LAUREL HUSTER laurel@newnan.com
B
ackpack Buddies will continue to distribute weekend food bags through the Coweta County School System’s free meal distribution program that is ongoing while school is closed because of COVID-19.
Each Friday during the school year, Backpack Buddies provides students who may need extra food on weekends with a bag of easy-to-eat food such as cereal, granola bars, fruit cups and pop-top canned food. The program will be able to distribute their regular weekend bags to every student who picks up the school system’s breakfast and lunch program while school is closed. Backpack Buddies will be distributing the bags at all seven meal service locations, including Newnan High School, Arnco-Sargent Elementary School, Ruth Hill Elementary School, Jefferson Parkway Elementary School, Smokey Road Middle School, Winston Dowdell Academy and East Coweta High School. Bags will be available from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 20 and Friday, March 27. Each child who is in the car at the pickup location will receive a Backpack Buddies bag. April Anderson, founder of Back-
pack Buddies, said the group will continue to distribute the bags until they run out of food. She said that it’s been challenging to stock up because some stores are limiting the amount they can buy. However, Anderson said they have had many people donate over the last several days. “It’s been amazing to see how people have stepped up to donate food,” she said. Backpack Buddies is accepting donations from 9 a.m. to noon and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at 96 Werz Industrial Blvd. Program Coordinator Lori Burnett said those donating items can drive around to the back of the building, and volunteers will unload the items for them. Donation items needed include granola bars, individual cereal boxes, individual fruit cups or applesauce, individual snack items, boxed macaroni and cheese, oatmeal or grits packets, pop-top ravioli or any small "meal-type" pop-top cans, pudding cups, ramen noodle packets, sandwich crackers and water bottles. “It’s been such an incredible thing to see our nonprofits come together and work together,” Burnett said.

hick-fil-A dining rooms are temporarily closed over concerns about the COVID-19 outbreak.
"As we navigate the evolving impact of COVID-19 on our communities, we are temporarily closing our dining room seating to help limit person-to-person contact,” the company stated in a release Sunday. “Some of our restaurants may only offer service through our drive-thrus, while others may be able to offer takeout, delivery or mobile order options." In Coweta County, Truett’s Chick-
fil-A and the Poplar Road Chick-fil-A both posted on their Facebook pages that they will be serving through the drive-thru, curbside and third party pick-up only. Both restaurants also encouraged people to place mobile orders through the Chick-fil-A app to reduce the time spent in line and to eliminate cash-handling. The company announced March 13 that in-restaurant playgrounds would close, and customers who utilized drive-thrus would no longer have the option of a printed menu.

Grocery rules for your coronavirus lockdown: Buy beans, freeze milk, don't hoard, and more BY LISA DRAYER
Courtesy of the Albany Herald
W
hether you're housebound for the next couple of weeks from a COVID-19 quarantine, or simply trying to survive a school or work shutdown, you'll likely be limiting or avoiding trips to the grocery store. So you may be wondering: What are the best foods to buy when you know you're going to
be stuck at home — and is it even possible to consume a nutritious diet? Well, here's some good news: You can make nutrition a priority, and it's something that is all the more important if your immune system may be compromised. "Though it might look a little different than normal, it's possible to eat healthfully when stuck at home," said Alyssa Pike, a registered dietitian and manager of nutrition communications at the International Food Information
Council. "Choosing shelf-stable foods like canned goods, pastas, rice and legumes and utilizing your freezer — (where) you can store breads, meats, vegetables, fruits and more — are great ways to ensure you have a nice variety when your trips to the grocery store are limited." Below is a list of foods that are not only nutritious but versatile too. They can be eaten solo, combined with other ingredients to assemble mini-meals, or used as the base for several rec-
ipes. Just remember that there's no need to buy out the stock at your local grocery store. "Right now there's no indication that food retailers will be unable to meet the demand of consumers," Pike said, and "it's also important to consider the needs of others and not overbuy." So only purchase what you actually need — and these items will last you awhile, which is convenient when you're unable to leave your abode.
What to buy for your pantry:
Beans and legumes
Reach for these on your next trip to the store, because they're not only long-lasting but also a great starting point for a nutrient-rich meal. "Beans and legumes are excellent shelf-stable sources of plant protein," Pike said. Chickpeas or lentils for example, can be mixed with salads and pasta dishes, or used in soups and stews. They can also be used for making homemade hummus, according to culinary nutritionist Jackie Newgent, author of "The Clean & Simple Diabetes Cookbook" and advisor to Lunch Unpacked.
Canned fish
Canned or vacuum-packed protein sources like tuna or salmon are also highly nutritious, and offer a boost of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
Nut butters These are a great source of protein and healthy fats, and pair well with lots of foods, from crackers and breads to apples and bananas, according to Pike. Sun butter, which is made from sunflower seeds, is appropriate for those
Stocking up on canned vegetables, canned especially during stressful times, Pike said. What to buy for your freezer:
Bread, deli meat and fresh seafood
Remember, fresh foods can be frozen, which will allow you to enjoy them at a later date. "Take full advantage of your freezer, including for foods that freeze well but that you might not typically freeze, such as milk, deli meats and breads," Newgent said. But dairy products like cheese and yogurt are another story. "Due to texture changes when
you freeze yogurt or cheese, I only recommend freezing yogurt if you plan to use it in a recipe, like for a smoothie, and I only recommend freezing shredded cheese that you plan to use in cooking, such as packaged shredded mozzarella," Newgent said. Hard cheese, like Parmesan, can keep in the refrigerator for weeks though, Newgent added. Additionally, if you already have fresh fish and meat, consider freezing it. "Animal proteins like seafood, poultry, and beef hold well in a freezer -- typically for a few months," Pike
said.
Additional fruits and vegetables Here's some uplifting news: Research has revealed that frozen fruits and vegetables can have just as many vitamins -- and sometimes more -- as compared to fresh. Frozen strawberries, blueberries and peaches can be used for smoothies, while spinach, broc-
coli, carrots, cauliflower, asparagus and green beans can be used as a solo side dish or mixed with pasta or rice. Packaged foods help meet the nutrition needs of many of us, including vegetarians, as well as those who have special dietary restrictions. "For vegans and vegetarians, packaged alternatives are a good option," Pike said, including items such as frozen bean burritos, frozen veggie burgers and frozen veggie pizza.
