Blue Angels, Thunderbirds salute health care workers BY CLAY NEELY

N

ewnan residents looked to the skies last Saturday afternoon as the legendary Blue Angels and Thunderbirds paid tribute to COVID-19 frontline responders with a flyover of metro Atlanta. The flying aces began their flyover near Marietta where they made two passes right over the area of Northside, St. Joseph’s and Scottish Rite, before ending their journey in the skies above Piedmont Newnan Hospital. The elite flying squads flew together in formation of a dozen fighter jets. The show was part of the national tour the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds are doing to show respect to the front line COVID-19 responders. The flights began earlier Saturday morning over Baltimore and Washington D.C. and then headed south. “It was an amazing sight to see the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels fly over the hospital and witness so many of our community members coming together,” said Piedmont Newnan CEO Mike Rob-

Honor teachers by submitting videos

tate School Superintendent Richard Woods is requesting that Georgians mark Teacher Appreciation Month by submitting videos to honor the teachers in their lives. “As we enter an unusual Teacher Appreciation Month, I am asking that all Georgians who have been touched by the contributions of a teacher during this time of distance learning – whether you are a student, parent, or community member – join us in saying ‘thank you,’” Woods wrote recently in an open letter. Those who wish to participate should record a video that is 20-30 seconds long personally thanking their teachers for their efforts during distance learning.

How to record and submit your video:

• Record the video on a laptop or desktop computer that is connected to a wired internet connection, using the webcam, for the fastest file upload. If you must record on your cell phone, please record in the horizontal position. Please note that data usage rates may apply. If available, connect your cell phone to a Wi-Fi connection before uploading your video. • Ensure that you and/or your child are well lit. An exterior window is an ideal

ertson. “Their flight to honor those on the frontlines battling COVID-19 and all the small acts of kindness we’ve received make everything we do as healthcare workers even more worth it. Our staff and patients are so thankful for everyone's support.” “America Strong is a way for both teams to show appreciation to the thousands of doctors, nurses, first responders and essential workers out there serving on the front line day-in and day-out,” said a statement from Cmdr. Brian Kesselring, U.S. Navy Blue Angels commanding officer and flight leader for the flyover last weekend in Washington. "Thank you to all of those in essential industries keeping our nation moving forward,” he said. “We will get through this. We are all in this together."

source for soft, natural light. Consider moving your laptop or take your cell phone to one. Use a desk lamp at your desktop computer. • Ensure that you record in a quiet location so we can hear you and/or your child well. • Record your video for 20-30 seconds, then upload the video. Depending on your connection, it may take several minutes to upload. • For computers running Microsoft Windows, the “Camera” app is recommended. For Apple computers, Photo Booth — which comes with all Macintosh computers and includes a video recording feature — is recommended. For cell phones, use your phone’s video recording application.

Upload videos to https://bit. ly/3frFi8m .

Your video may be edited together with other videos made by students, parents and others who support our state’s teachers. They will be shared throughout May on the Georgia Department of Education’s YouTube channel, Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Psalm 46 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

ommunity Christian Church has launched its “Neighbor To Neighbor” program to deliver boxes of supplies and food to those in the community who need them. The church began collecting supplies on Easter and launched the delivery program last weekend, said John Martin, outreach director. “We are specifically trying to reach those who are self-quarantined due to symptoms, those in a high-risk category due to age or health, or those who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are under a mandatory quarantine,” said Martin. The church has plenty of volunteers and supplies, and now it needs people who need the service, Martin said. “We want to help. And hopefully, if there is a need, it will begin to come in,” he said. “We don’t really know exactly what to expect.” Martin said they started the program because there are a lot of church members who really want to help out during this time. While several organizations are giving out food, there are not a lot of delivery options, he said. The makeup of boxes will depend on the

need. “We have a lot of toilet paper, we have a lot of paper towels, we have laundry detergent, dish detergent,” Martin said, as well as a variety of non-perishable foods. To keep things as safe as possible, items are donated through a drop box at the church. Church staff or volunteers then take items out of the drop box and put them in a designated room for three days, so any potential coronavirus that could be on the items will naturally die off. Items are then taken by gloved workers into another room, and when boxes are packed, workers wear gloves. Everyone making deliveries also wears gloves, and the deliveries are no-contact. “There’s never a big group of people; it’s mostly just me and maybe one other person,” Martin said. “There’s not a big team of people touching things.” To sign up for a delivery, go to www.cowetaneighbor.com and fill out the form. Those without internet access can call the church at 770-251-9516. If there is no answer, leave a message.
