even students taught by instructors from the Coweta-Fayette Music Teachers Association recently placed in the final state round of the Georgia Music Teachers Association Piano Competition. The GMTA event is the biggest student competition in the state, and every year local students begin the competition at the CFMTA local auditions before moving ahead to regionals and state. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, students had to participate virtually for the regional and state rounds. Students are extremely competitive at the state level, and advancing to the state competition is considered an accomplishment. Once there, a few select students are placed into three different categories and ranked. Local students who received those rankings included: Jiho An, fourth grade, Honorable Mention – student of Inyoung Choi; Yelin Kim, ninth grade, Honorable Mention – student of Inyoung Choi; Sophia Madani, sixth grade, Award of Excellence – student of Fernando Ramos; Vedita Sawhney, seventh grade, Honorable Mention – student of Inna Satunovsky; Khumo Simelane, ninth grade, Honorable Mention – student of LuAnn Latza-

nich; Lina Wang, fifth grade, Honorable Mention – student of Eric Clay; and Paul Yi, 10th grade, Honorable Mention – student of Inyoung Choi. “CFMTA and our local community were very well represented by these amazing students,” said Ramos, who serves as president of CFMTA.

Then Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I Say onto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh Not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd Gives his life for the sheep.” (John 10:7-11)

he Boys & Girls Clubs of Coweta County are hosting summer food distributions for the community on Fridays from noon to

2 p.m. Anyone can drive through and pick up meals at the Boys & Girls Club located at 55 Savannah St. Volunteers will also be visiting local communities to drop off meals to senior housing authority residents and in neighborhoods where Boys & Girls Club members live. The clubs have already held three food distributions, said Lauren Odom, executive director of the Newnan-Coweta and Howard Warner Boys & Girls Clubs. The distributions will take place every Friday through July 17. The program began when Camp Southern Ground reached out to the Metro Atlanta Boys & Girls Clubs offering to provide prepackaged frozen meals for families. Odom said she requested 100 meals for the Newnan clubs, and they were selected as a distribution site. Good Food Works Foundation is also donating 100 prepackaged box meals for the Newnan clubs to distribute, each of which feeds four people. Backpack Buddies has donated bags of prepackaged snacks and food for Boys & Girls Club children as well. Children who are participating in the

Boys & Girls Club virtual summer program also can pick up supplies for the activities. Any children in the community can participate in the camps by registering at www.bgcma.org/theclub . Odom said some of the virtual summer programs include Club Zoom, where kids can catch up over Zoom; Get Fit with Coach D; Lit Lab, which connects literacy and STEM; comic book making; digital storytelling; and DIY STEM, which has includes a make your own lava lamp and homemade ice cream tutorial. She said the program, including the virtual program and supplies, was made available through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant provided by the Georgia Department of Education. Odom said at the beginning of COVID-19, the clubs worked with NuLink to get parents of Boys & Girls Club kids signed up for the internet, which has allowed them to participate in the virtual camps. “With the schools closing and summer program up in the air, we were looking for ways to connect with kids and keep them engaged,” Odom said. “All of this would not be possible without our community partners including the city of Newnan, Arden’s Garden, Papa John’s and the Boys & Girls Club Board.”

Adjusting to the Lockdown

Wednesday, June 24, 2020 — Marketplace — 5

e Covid -19 virus has resulted in a multitude of deaths throughout our nation and until a vaccine is developed we must all be vigilant in adhering to strict hygiene procedures, including social distancing & wearing facemasks. e economy is slowly reopening on a limited basis in advance of a vaccine and we all hope and pray that the virus spread does not escalate. e media keeps us updated on the spread of the virus and mortality rates nationwide. Evidence is clear that those with underling health issues and the elderly are most at risk should they contract the virus. Publicity surrounding higher than normal death rates in elderly care facilities has left the impression that these facilities are virus-ridden. is is not always the case. In fact, elderly care facilities that follow CDC and Dept. of Community Health “lockdown” guidelines prohibiting non-essential workers from entering the communities, social distancing, caregivers wearing facemasks and practicing extraordinary hygiene procedures all are keeping their communities safe. Another negative consequence of the “lock down” restrictions is that family and friends are unable to visit their loved ones. Many communities utilize social media devices such has Facetime, Skype & Zoom for families to connect remotely. In addition to these social media devices Monarch House Assisted Living has taken family visits one step further. We set up a “visitation booth” in front of the building for seniors and family to safely sit up close, face-to-face separated only by plexiglass windows. Monarch House has had zero incidences of Covid-19 to date. It may be that in addition to all of the new restrictions in place, the fact that Monarch House is a small community of only 41 private suites situated within spacious community spaces has made social distancing among its residents very easy and safe. Monarch House also has a high-tech ventilation system that brings in fresh air from outside and exhausts stale air resulting in a pollutant free environment. We are all looking forward to the day when life returns to normal. In the meantime we remain vigilant in keeping our seniors safe. For more information and a virtual tour we look forward to hearing from you.

Come see what families with a loved one at Monarch House are talking about! Call 678.552.9867 for a tour or visit our website at www.monarchhouse.net
