Coweta residents celebrate Juneteenth BY JEFFREY CULLEN-DEAN jeff rey@newnan.com

C

itizens for Positive Reform hosted a Juneteenth celebration at First Avenue Park on Friday afternoon. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is celebrated annually on June 19 and marks the anniversary of the emancipation of slaves in the United States. "CPR is celebrating Freedom Day to bring awareness to the community of the day and history, and to come together, network and just have fun," said Stacey Bristow, CPR's organizer. Bristow said the celebration was independent of the recent protests on the Historic Court Square in Newnan. The protests have ceased for an undetermined amount of time, she added. "Today is about celebrations," Bristow said. Bernard Bryant, an attendee, said he did not know about Juneteenth until last year after seeing posts about it from friends on social media. As he's learned more about the day, he said Juneteenth has gained significance in his life. "I realize that celebrating this day is important considering all the land and wealth lost," he said. "For my personal reasons, I won't be cele-

brating July 4th. This is my personal Independence Day." During the event, Bristow performed a libation ceremony. She poured water from a bottle in honor of leaders, ancestors, new generations, the elements, the individuals at the park and the creator. Bryant said the ceremony is a way to connect back to late ancestors. Also attending the event were members of the Newnan Police Department. Bristow said she invited the NPD to attend for safety and to foster relationships within the community. "I always reach out to the NPD when having a community event," she said. The NPD set up a tent to share information on their community programs such as Guitars Not Guns, hand out pencils, paints and coloring books, and to distribute booster seats to families, said Community Resource Officer Edward Lee. "Stacey Bristow invited us out here. We love being out in the community and helping out. Even with all the stuff going on, we would still PHOTO BY JEFFREY CULLEN-DEAN have come. This is what we do," said Cpl. Adam Attendees of the Juneteenth celebration sing the Black national anthem "Lift Every Voice Griffith. and Sing." Although the protests have stopped, Bristow said CPR is still working on ways to address police reform within Newnan and Coweta Coun- ty. "CPR will be continuing to research our group and community to identify solutions to agenda items to have a dialogue between the our concerns," she said.

Mattingly 2020 NCHS Scholarship winner NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com

T

he Newnan-Coweta Historical Society recently announced Anastasia Mattingly from Newnan High School as this year’s $10,000 scholarship recipient. Mattingly graduated from Newnan in May as a 4.0 GPA student, a Georgia Merit Certificate recipient and Distinguished Young Women runner-up and scholastic award winner. She will be attending the University of Georgia as a double history and dance major. After graduating with her degree, she hopes to teach history at Newnan High School and start a dance program at the school, according to a press release from NCHS. Mattingly said some of her most meaningful high school moments have come from participation in her history classes. Throughout her high school career, Mattingly has volunteered and worked with veterans through Newnan High School’s history department. “These actions have ingrained a drive in me to do what I can to make a difference, and I want to continue this work and strive to instill a care for others, respect for history, and desire to learn and improve the world around us into others,” she said. It was Mattingly’s love of history and her drive to become a history teacher that caught the attention of the NCHS Scholarship Committee, according to the release. “Anastasia stood out amongst a group of outstanding candidates for her commitment to history, achievements in high school and goal to be a history educator,” said John Cunningham, vice president of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society Board and chair of the Scholarship Committee. “We are thankful to our donors and members for giving us the resources to be able to provide this scholarship to such a bright and well-deserving student in our community.” The NCHS scholarship is intended to promote the study of history and history-related fields. History helps us understand change, society and community, and the study of it creates well-rounded, skillful citizens. This specific scholarship is an investment in the Newnan and Coweta community and its future, and serves to promote the Historical Society’s goal of preserving and protecting local history, according to the release.

Newnan-Coweta Historical Society Director Emily Kimbell, left, with scholarship recipient Anastasia Mattingly.

“History is so relevant and imperative to understand in everyday life, and in a city like Newnan that is bursting with history, I hope to motivate students to appreciate this and make them eager to know more,” Mattingly said. “With this scholarship, I can surely pursue and acquire the assets to expand another’s awareness, gratitude and respect for history.”

Then Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I Say onto you, I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh Not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd Gives his life for the sheep.” (John 10:7-11)

Rock Salt Milk Bar offers ice cream, cookies and smiles

BY RACHEL ADAMS news@newnan.com

Cynthia Hendricks runs and works at the Rock Salt Milk Bar, which opened May 2019 in what was previously the Cookie Barr.

Cynthia Hendricks’ Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream recipe This is a relatively low-fat recipe (12.5 percent milkfat) but I find it to be refreshing, and the lower fat content allows the flavors to shine through. The dry milk powder adds creaminess.

INGREDIENTS

RECIPE

• • • • •

3/4 cup heavy cream 1 1/4 cups whole milk 1/3 cup dry milk powder 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• •

Combine all ingredients thoroughly and refrigerate for at least an hour. The colder it is the better! If you want to add fruit, 1/2 to 3/4 cup of macerated strawberries or peaches can be added to this mix.

ou could say Cynthia Hendricks has a pretty sweet job. For just over a year, her Rock Salt Milk Bar has been open in downtown Newnan and allows her the opportunity to serve ice cream and cookies to the community. Hendricks runs it with her son, Grayson. She and her husband currently live in Newnan, as does Grayson. Hendricks shared her experience about running an ice cream shop and why she decided to open one initially. “We actually had some friends that had one, and I’ve always liked making ice cream,” she said. “We were looking for something to do, and we decided that ice cream was a great way to go.” Hendricks said that at the time, she and her husband were traveling full time in an RV and ate ice cream often. “We decided that this was what we wanted,” she said. “We wanted to make it ourselves, from real ingredients, to be what we liked. And that’s how the idea was born.” Rock Salt Milk Bar was previously the Cookie Barr, a cookie shop run by Sarah Barr, who still works at the store baking cookies. Hendricks said that she went to the store to ask Barr about buying one of her ovens, and they got to talking. “I asked her what her plans were for the store,” Hendricks said. “I love cookies, and I wanted cookies to go with the ice cream, but that’s not really my strength. It’s hers, though; she’s an amazing baker. She still bakes all of the cookies from scratch, and we make the ice cream.” Hendricks said that they have made about 60 ice cream flavors now, with 12 core flavors and 12 other flavors in rotation, for a total of 24 flavors for sale at one time. Some flavors, such as fruits, are only available seasonally. The store gets its ice cream mix from Working Cows Dairy, an organic dairy in Alabama. Hendricks takes pride in her ice cream’s organic ingredients.

“Everything is real. A lot of people ask, ‘What do you do differently?’ And really, the thing that we do differently from most ice cream places these days is that we make our ice cream from real ingredients,” Hendricks said. “We don’t have a lot of stabilizers, and we have very little additives in our mix. Good ingredients going in gives you a good product coming out.” Hendricks said that getting up and running was a unique challenge, given that neither she nor her son had much food service experience. “The learning curve has been really steep. We really just didn’t have any experience or any idea what to do,” Hendricks said. “But at the same time, it’s really fun, and we’ve gotten better. Our processes are a little better, and we kind of know what we’re doing now.” Hendricks also talked about why she decided to open the shop in Newnan. “We’ve always come down here. We love this downtown,” Hendricks said. “You don’t see a lot of downtowns that are still vibrant and relevant, and this one still is.” Hendricks said her favorite part of running the shop is that it’s fun, and she likes to make people happy. “It’s very rare that someone is unhappy with their ice cream or that someone’s just unhappy to be eating ice cream,” Hendricks said. “It’s a pretty good business to be in. People come in here to eat ice cream, and so it’s a happy place to be. Ice cream makes everything better.” The Rock Salt Milk Bar is located at 8 E. Washington St. and is currently open Tuesday through Saturday. Rock Salt Milk Bar won first place for Best Dessert in Newnan-Coweta Magazine's 2020 Best of Coweta Contest. Check out more winners in the magazine's July/August issue, available July 25 at area businesses or online at newnancowetamagazine.com.
