t’s official. The 2020 Kiwanis Coweta County Fair has been canceled. Citing the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, Kiwanis officials said the impact on community health and well-being was the primary concern in the decision to cancel the event. Scott Cortner, Newnan Kiwanis Fair Committee Chairman, said the health and safety of guests, volunteers and the community is the group’s highest priority. "This decision was not taken lightly,” Cortner said. "This was a tough decision because we recognize the impact this has on the community, but the health and welfare of the community is more important." "The other big issue is the restrictions,” he continued. “The social distancing, wearing face masks, sanitizing – we just don't feel we have the resources to enforce all that." As the COVID-19 pandemic becomes less of an issue, Kiwanis will look for other ways to help raise money for the community, according to Christopher Gilliam, Newnan Kiwanis Club President. “For more than 70 years, the Kiwanis Club of Newnan has improved the lives of the citizens of Coweta County through annual monetary grants to over 35 nonprofit organizations serving our

community, totaling over $2.8 million in the past 10 years,” Gilliam said. “We thank our sponsors, our volunteers and all those who work countless hours to make the fair the success that it is and look forward to welcoming everyone back in September 2021." Since 1947, the Newnan Kiwanis Club has sponsored the local fair, and with the exception of one year, has sponsored each annual event since, according to the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society.

Read Psalm 103 and Then Declare Today the Lord is on my side. There is sufficiency in my house through God’s promises. God is more than able to bring change to my life and the lives of my family members. The God who created heaven and earth is the same God who can heal me…heart, soul, mind, and body. Declare right now that by the Blood of Jesus, you are set free! You are redeemed, restored, forgiven, healed, and blessed. Today you have the power to receive total victory!

s social distancing makes large scale gatherings difficult, the local Boys and Girls Club is finding new ways to engage the public while providing crucial funding needed for the organization. On Thursday, September 17, the Boys and Girls Club will host a virtual benefit for both branches of the club’s locations in Newnan. “Dinner and a Future” will allow patrons to purchase a three-course Italian dinner provided by Life of the South Catering, along with a bottle of red or white wine, to accompany the virtual program held at 7 p.m. Each year, two fundraisers are held to benefit the Newnan-Coweta Boys & Girls Club and Howard Warner Boys & Girls Club. With the ongoing concerns regarding social distancing, the group has opted to host a virtual program this year in lieu of the annual Beer, Bourbon, and Wine event, which is typically held in August. The “Dinner and a Future” event will feature a program consisting of several speakers, including Justin Wallace, the 2020 Boys and Girls Club Teen of the Year and recipient of over $10,000 in scholarships from the organization. Joygina Benning, graduating senior

and recipient of $3,500 in scholarships from the organization, will also speak during the event, along with testimony from a Coweta parent about the impact the club has had on their child. Attendees will also have an option to participate in an online auction to benefit the operations of both clubs. The organization currently serves around 200 children in Coweta County in two different locations – the Howard Warner Boys & Girls Club at 55 Savannah St. and the Newnan / Coweta Boys & Girls Club at 72 Wesley St. Money raised from the event is used to operate both clubs, which currently host 200 members daily. The organization serves youths age 6 years old through 18 years old, and provides a variety of programs. Tickets for the event are $75 per couple for the 3-course meal, with contactless pickup the day prior. However, they will be offering delivery within 10 miles of downtown Newnan for an additional donation of $15 per household. There is also an option of purchasing an additional non-alcohol meal for $60 for a club member family at the time of checkout. Ticket purchasing and donations for “Dinner and a Future” can be made at www.dinnerfuture.givesmart.com .

ewnan residents gathered at Greenville Street Park on Saturday to show appreciation for local law enforcement officials. The day of appreciation was organized by Cindy Sellards, a Newnan resident. "The reason it got started is because my son is federal law enforcement," she said. "I wanted to do something to honor him." Reading a proclamation from the mayor and city council, the rally kicked off with Newnan City Council Member George Alexander declaring the day Newnan Police Recognition Day. "I will put any of the men and women in our law enforcement against anyone in the country," Alexander said. Following the proclamation was a short performance by local band, Dean Thomas and the Better Days, and prayers by Greg McEvoy of Southside Church and Tim Camp of the Newnan Men's Pipe Club. "Behind a badge is a heart, and you're asked to do more than any individual should do," McEvoy said to the officers in attendance. Gifts were also given to the officers at the Newnan Police Department. Tumblers and discounts donated by local businesses were given to each NPD officer, Sellards said.

Also at the event were 24 copies of the children's book "Our Police," purchased by Darryl Coyne, to be given to officers to share with their children or grandchildren. Coyne said the officers could use the books to help younger family members understand their parent's or grandparent's job in the community. The books were available for the attendees of the event to sign to show their support for officers. At the event, Deputy Chief Mark Cooper acknowledged the other law enforcement agencies within Coweta. "We are blessed to have leadership that works together with other agencies. It's all really one big team. We are blessed to have a sheriff, a chief, the Grantville Police Department and the Senoia Police Department," he said. "Each one of those agencies support each other and we support them as well." "It's awesome to receive support from the community. They trust us to be the police force, and we're thankful for the support," Cooper said. "We look forward to always being there to support the community." Sellards said she is in the process of planning a similar event to show support for the deputies at the Coweta County Sheriff 's Office.

Fire crews battle heat, back-to-back house fires BY CLAY NEELY

clay@newnan.com

I

n a day that saw temperatures rising into the mid-90s, Coweta firefighters battled back-to-back house fires in the north part of the county Monday afternoon. Just after 12:30 p.m., firefighters arrived at 160 Frontier Road off Palmetto Tyrone Road in response to an accessory building fire that spread to the primary residence, according to District Chief Robby Flanagan with Coweta County Fire Rescue. Four cross-trained firefighters arrived on scene and were able to deploy two hand lines, one inside and one outside the residence, which allowed personnel to extinguish the fire quickly, Flanagan said. All residents and animals were located safely outside the home, and no one was reported injured. At 4 p.m., the same group of firefighters responded to a house fire at 145 Waters Edge Lane off South Alexander Creek Road after neighbors reported smoke coming from the residence. Additionally, an Airlife helicopter pilot returning from Atlanta saw smoke and flames from the sky and called in the co-

ordinates of the location to 911 as well. Firefighters arrived and found the home fully involved and immediately went into a defensive strategy to battle the fire. Crews deployed several hand lines and master streams to knock the fire down, but were unable to go inside the structure due to the conditions. It took several hours for firefighters to fully extinguish the fire, and the home was deemed a total loss, according to Flanagan. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. All five dogs belonging to the homeowner were located safe, Flanagan said. Additional crews were brought in to assist with the conclusion of the fire, which helped get trucks back in service and personnel back to their stations. Crews from Stations 1, 2, 6, 7 and 14 were used to battle both fires, which forced the county to switch to zone coverage to ensure all calls would be covered in their territory, Flanagan said. Normal operations were resumed Monday evening following the conclusion of the house fire on Waters Edge Lane.
