he Newnan Carnegie Library will host several online events including interviews with local authors. T.M. Brown, author of the Shiloh Mystery Series and resident of Coweta County, will be featured on a Zoom broadcast this Saturday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. Carnegie Director Susan Crutchfield will host and engage Brown to talk about his most recent release, “Purgatory, A Progeny’s Quest” – the third and final story in the Shiloh series. “We’re looking forward to interviewing author T.M. Brown about his exciting mystery series,” says Crutchfield. “We’re glad we can provide quality programming for patrons to enjoy from the comfort of their homes.” Hometown Novel Nights also returns to the Carnegie on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. for a special Zoom event. This HNN evening will be with three outstanding Georgia authors, which you can watch from the comfort and convenience of your home. Author Valerie Valdes is most recently published in Uncanny Magazine, Time Travel Short Stories and Nightmare Magazine. Her debut novel “Chilling Effect” was published by Harper Voyager in September 2019 and by Orbit UK in February 2020. Pat McKee is a local Newnan lawyer and first-time novelist of “Ariel’s Island,” which was a winner of the National Indie Excellence Award. A graduate of Georgia State University and Emory Law School, Pat and his wife, Donna, live in Newnan where he practices law. Angie Gallion is a regular at Hometown Novel Nights and designs a lot of the posters and social media for HNN. She is also the author of “Intoxic,” “Purgus,” “Icara,” “Emergent” and “Off the Dark Ledge.” She resides in Sharpsburg with her family. The Zoom link information will be emailed after registration via Eventbrite. Each author will share about themselves,
their writing journey and their latest book(s). Books will be available to purchase from the Carnegie or Corner Arts Gallery and Studios (our event sponsors). This event will be recorded in case you can’t make it at the scheduled time. Registration for these events is required on Eventbrite. For more information, visit the library’s Facebook page at www.facebook. com/NewnanCarnegie .
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:6-9 KJV

CPPD started chasing the suspect, along with Georgia State Patrol troopers and officers of the Hapeville Police Department. The pursuit went through multiple jurisdictions, and shots were fired between the suspect and CPPD officers, according to a post on the CPPD’s Facebook page. The suspect wrecked the vehicle near the intersection of Toffie Terrace and North Inner Loop Road in East Point. Landrum said he rammed the suspect’s car, and the suspect shot him through the windshield of his vehicle. “As soon as I rammed him, I felt something tug on my neck,” said Landrum. “I didn’t know what it was, then I saw the hole in the windshield. That’s when I thought, ‘Man, that guy shot me.’” The CPPD Facebook post said the bullet hit Landrum’s bulletproof vest and deflected upward and lodged into his neck. However, Landrum said he thinks the bullet hit him directly in the neck. Landrum said he applied pressure to the wound and called over the radio that he had been hit. CPPD officers Sgt. Steven Dunn and Lt. Cody Smith immediately took him to Atlanta Medical Center South. “I was just breathing, and I was afraid to shut my eyes, even though I wanted to,” said Landrum. “As soon as I realized I was hit, I swear I said, ‘Protect me, Jesus,’ and I felt him right next to me.” Landrum said the bullet was surgically removed from his neck. He said although the wound has healed, it has taken him about four months to feel completely normal. For a while, Landrum said he felt out of balance and would get tired more easily. He said after he was wounded, the College Park Police Chief Ferman Williford told Landrum he was going to recommend him for a Purple Heart award. Landrum was given the award in a ceremony at the police station recently. He said his family, several officers and the mayor of College Park attended. He also said his colleague Dunn, who put him in the patrol car and took him to the hospital, received a Meritorious Service award. “It’s an honor and it sounds trite, but you do feel like you’re being honored for something that somebody else would’ve

done the same thing,” Landrum said. “There is an element of that, but it’s certainly an honor.” Landrum said he was amazed at the outpouring of support he received after he was wounded. He said people have written him cards from as far away as Oregon. “It’s so important for people to understand that right now, there are so many that support us and know that they need us,” Landrum said. “The reality on the ground is different than it’s portrayed on TV.” He said he recently went through a drive-thru to get something to eat while on duty, and the person in front of him paid for his meal. Landrum said that’s something that happens with some regularity. Landrum added that he feels so much gratitude for Dunn and Smith who helped get him to the hospital after he was shot. “These two guys are some of the best friends I have,” Landrum said. “It is really hard to put into words what they did for me.”

The Times-Herald won 10 first-place awards in the Georgia Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, including headline writing, spot news and advertising design. Division B is for daily newspapers with a circulation of 6,000-9,999. Entries were judged in seven divisions based on circulation.
The Kiwanis Coweta County Fair. Clay Neely won first-place honors for Headline Writing and Spot News photography. For the headline “No Happy Endings In Prostitution Sting,” judges commented it was "the best collection of three fun but reader attention-grabbing headlines. “Took a real brave step on ‘happy endings,’ but it paid off here, and we hope it did with the readers as well.” In a photo taken after a house fire, judges said the photo included “many important elements: the arrestee walking down the street with an officer, smoke and emergency vehicles related to the fire, and neighbors watching from a nearby porch. This spot news photo effectively tells much of the story, supporting the companion article.” NTH graphic designers Debby Dye, Sonya Studt and Sandy Hiser, along with advertising consultants Jill Whitley and Misha Benson. won first place awards for advertising campaigns and graphic design in campaigns such as Insignia Healthcare, Knox Furniture, The Donald Nixon Center for the Arts and
Second-place awards went to Newnan-Coweta Magazine for Best Overall Design, Emily Lasher for Best Use of Graphics and Illustration, and Rebecca Leftwich for her feature on the former KKK member who struck up an unusual friendship with a Syrian refugee. Alex McRae won second place for Humorous Column. Judges commented on how much they enjoyed McRae’s "Wry ruminations and fond recollections focused on the human condition.” Newnan Coweta-Magazine won second place for Best Overall Design for their Senoia issue.
T
Third Place Third-place awards went to Sarah Fay Campbell for her series on homelessness and housing solutions in Coweta County, and to Rebecca Leftwich for feature writing. Newnan-Coweta Magazine received thirdplace honors for best magazine cover design and best magazine business feature – a look at 13 Stories Haunted House by Emily Kimbell.
