he Newnan-Coweta Art Association and the town of Sharpsburg have partnered on an East Coweta High School themed mural on a storage container located behind Town Hall. "The Community Center and park are very popular," said Sharpsburg Mayor Blue Cole in a press release. "We already had the container – it was an eyesore – but we were excited to partner with the NCAA to beautify the park. Adding the East Coweta theme was a perfect finishing touch." The mural features ECHS themed dreamcatchers with “Class of ” designations, as well as Native American iconography. The other sides of the container will be set up for photography, including space for student art and improved landscaping. President of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association Margo Merrifield and a team of three other painters – including Maryann Bonk, Tammy Troyer and Llana York – worked on the project for about three weeks. The Newnan-Coweta Art Association Inc. encourages and aids artists to produce original works of art of every type and character. They assist in the
display of such works in Coweta County, and foster education and instruction in the creation and appreciation of works of art. The association supports the arts in Coweta schools through donations and scholarships to high school students pursuing art in college, according to the release.

Sheriff’s Office invites public to compete in 5K for law enforcement BY CLAY NEELY

T
his fall, the Coweta County Sheriff ’s Office is aiming to get the community moving as part of a nationwide 5K race for law enforcement. On Oct. 10, the sheriff ’s office will take part in the National Run for the Badge. Traditionally held in downtown Washington, D.C., with a virtual race option, this year’s race will take place entirely remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and efforts to keep all participants safe. Participants are encouraged to run in their homes, backyards, or local parks and trails, while practicing social distancing and with other members of their Run for the Badge race team.
This marks the first year the Coweta County Sheriff ’s Office will participate in the annual event. All proceeds from the event go to the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum in Washington, D.C. Currently, the sheriff ’s office has seven members ready to participate but is hopeful to field a much larger team, according to Keith Claycomb who has helped organize the Coweta team. However, you don’t need to be an employee of the sheriff ’s office to participate, as civilians are also welcome to join in. Simply submit your 5K time or participate in the “Race to 100K” where you can log mileage up to Oct. 10. To join, simply login to the website , search for the existing Coweta team and sign up. “With the year we’ve had so far, we’re

really hoping to help get people motivated and out the door,” Claycomb said. “We have to social distance, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get out and exercise.” Registration for the National Run for the Badge 5K is now open. Participants are encouraged to register and create a team of family members, friends, colleagues or fellow runners. Individuals may also choose to join a team that has already formed by contacting the team captain. he “cutest day in downtown” won’t be happening this year. Downtown Newnan’s Munchkin Masquerade Halloween event has been canceled because of COVID-19. The annual downtown tradition takes place Halloween morning, when thousands of costumed preschoolers and their parents descend on downtown to trick-or-treat at local businesses. “We are deeply disappointed to cancel the annual Munchkin Masquerade, but it is impossible to properly social distance thousands of young children in downtown Newnan,” said Abigail Strickland, special events coordinator for Main Street Newnan. The event always draws a huge crowd, with packed sidewalks and long lines of those waiting for candy. “We can’t control the crowd because there are so many people,” Strickland said. Main Street has also canceled the Tucked Away music festival. Market Days and the fall Art Walk are continuing. With those events, things are more spaced out, and business owners can control the amount of traffic inside their stores. At Market Day, the number of vendors has been cut in half, and all vendors are spaced out, Strickland said. Vendors are encouraged to use touch-free payment, are required to offer hand sanitizer, and can’t give
out samples. They’re also asked to handle all of their goods, so that customers aren’t touching them. With the Art Walk, Main Street is requiring that the artists be outside unless there is significant space inside the store. Main Street Newnan’s mission is downtown development and helping downtown businesses. “That’s what we’re here for, to make sure that these businesses are thriving,” Strickland said. Some of the events that have been canceled because of COVID-19 aren’t particularly conducive to local businesses. The Munchkin Masquerade is a favorite event of Main Street staff, Strickland said. “We are very saddened by canceling it,” she said. “There is nothing better than watching a bunch of preschoolers in their costumes. It’s the cutest day in downtown.”

back pain, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, radiculopathy (commonly known as a pinched nerve), myelopathy (compression of the spinal cord), spinal deformity/scoliosis, and spinal trauma. He is passionate about restoring patients’ function through an individualized approach and prefers nonoperative treatment whenever possible. “The vast majority of spine pathology can be treated nonoperatively,” Love says. “Most people have one or two episodes of back pain, and 90% of them never need surgery.” Dr. Love explains that his goal is to give patients “many more good days than bad without invasive treatment.” “When a patient comes into my office complaining of lumbar pain without a history of injury, I first look for weakness or spasticity, and then do some x-rays. Depending on what that shows, we schedule a short course of anti-inflammatory medication, and immediately set them up to see one of our therapists at our Newnan or Peachtree City office.” This course of action will often lead to a relief of the acute phase of pain, Dr. Love says, but for long term relief, patients will need to incorporate the exercises they learn in therapy into their daily lives. “Low back pain is not something we’ve found a surefire cure for, but they will find relief with the tools we give them from a therapy perspective. The goal really is preventing surgery, and the majority of people never need surgery for back pain.” Dr. Love notes, however, that patients’ fear of back surgery is often unfounded
and based on outdated information. “When it is indicated, spine surgery is extremely safe and effective,” Love explains. “It works well for people with neurological complaints, such as a herniated disc in their neck or back. While 80% get better with time and nonoperative treatment, there are some patients who don’t respond well to therapy or other non-invasive procedures. In most cases, a decompression in the lumbar spine will prevent a spinal fusion in the future.” He continues, “The goal in those cases is to do a single surgery. We want to avoid surgery if at all possible, but if you have to have it, choosing the right surgeon will eliminate the horror stories you hear.” A Georgia native, Dr. Love was attracted to Newnan not only because of Georgia Bone and Joint’s reputation for providing patient-directed spine care, but also because of its well-respected community of doctors. He says he feels needed here: “my patients can have safe, effective spine surgery without having to travel into Atlanta.” Clark Walker, MD is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine and sports-related injuries. His primary areas of focus include minimally invasive shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee arthroscopy, shoulder arthroplasty, cartilage restoration, fracture care, and non-surgical management of musculoskeletal injuries. Dr. Walker specializes in advanced treatment techniques of rotator cuff tears, shoulder labral tears, shoulder arthritis, ACL tears, meniscus tears, and cartilage injuries of the knee. He also has an interest in sports-related elbow injuries, including UCL reconstruction (Tommy John Surgery), as well as arthroscopic management
for debilitating hip conditions including femoroacetabular impingement and labral tears. Dr. Walker notes that while his specialty is Sports Medicine, these injuries are common in anyone who lives an active lifestyle: “I enjoy taking care of high school and collegiate athletes- in fact, you’ll find us on the sidelines at the high school football games every Friday night taking care of our student athletes- but the reality is that these injuries can happen to anyone who wants to stay active.”
“
We were looking for a place that was similar to where we grew up, and we fell in love with Newnan. -CLARK WALKER, MD
”
“The majority of the time, there’s not a specific mechanism of injury, and the patient is well into their adult years. For instance, rotator cuff tears are common over time- they can be either sudden or a degenerative condition.” “If someone is ever experiencing pain
or symptoms that are keeping them from being as functional as they want to be, it’s a good time to see an orthopedic surgeonit doesn’t necessarily mean surgery, but we can get you on a treatment plan to restore your quality of life.” While Dr. Walker has traveled extensively for work- he has served as a team physician for the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, and is still in the team physician pool for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team- Dr. Walker ultimately chose to settle in Newnan because it reminded him of the small town he grew up in. “My family is all from South Georgia. We were looking for a place that was similar to where we grew up, and we fell in love with Newnan. The location was ideal, and I could fill an important role with Georgia Bone and Joint and really enjoyed the people I met during the interview process.” “Since my wife and I both grew up in smaller towns, we really wanted to invest in where we lived. I wanted to provide high-level orthopedic care locally without people having to drive into Atlanta.” Dr. Jayson McMath, President of Georgia Bone and Joint, states, "all of us at Georgia Bone and Joint are excited to welcome Dr. David Love and Dr. Clark Walker to our practice and to our community. They are tremendous additions to our staff bringing unique experiences in spine care and sports medicine. With the growth in Newnan and Peachtree City, we knew we needed to grow our services to continue to serve our patients with the best orthopedic care in the area."
