Education Teacher of the Year
Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism may be nominated for this award. For example, do you know a teacher who plans field trips to city hall or organizes community volunteer projects? Maybe you know an instructor who invites veterans into the classroom to discuss their military experiences. Nominations can be submitted by fellow teachers, supervisors, family members or other interested individuals. A winner will be selected by VFW Post 2667 in elementary, middle and high school teacher categories. Post-level winners will advance to the district and state levels for further judging. For more information, contact VFW Post 2667 Commander Jeffrey Bouchard at 678-877-5975 or jmbref@gmail.com .

wanted to focus on the youth and children in Coweta County, and Woodward found someone to make the Book Nook boxes for them. They decided on Pinewood Villas as the first location since it neighbors the sheriff ’s office. Wood said there are several children who live there, and in the nearby Berry Avenue neighborhoods. “Reading is knowledge, and we need to encourage reading to our youth,” Wood said. Wood added that the Book Nook installed Monday is the first of many they hope to put out in different neighborhoods around Coweta County.

Local HAM radio operator speaks to Rotary Club PHOTO BY CLAY NEELY
Joe Domaleski, a member of the Fayette County Amateur Radio Club, spoke about HAM radio during Friday’s meeting of The Newnan Rotary Club. As an operator, Domaleski helps provide backup, auxiliary communications to Fayette County Emergency Services and public service communications to road races, bike events, walk-a-thons and triathlons along with assisting the National Weather Service as spotters. “When all else fails, amateur radio still works,” Domaleski said, who said he was inspired to get into the field after the events of 9/11. “I wanted to find a way to plug into the community that was helpful,” he said. “I got a HAM license in case radio ever goes down.” The Newnan Rotary Club meets every Friday at noon at the Newnan Country Club.

‘Dinner and a Future’ raises over $26k for Boys and Girls Club
virtual benefit produced some real-life results for local branches of the Boys and Girls Club. The program, entitled “Dinner and a Future,” raised $26,332 for both of the club’s locations in Newnan. The event allowed patrons to purchase a three-course Italian dinner provided by Life of the South Catering, along with a bottle of red or white wine, to accompany the virtual program. Donors also purchased meals for club members. Along with dinner, attendees were able to participate in an online auction to benefit the operations of both clubs. Each year, two fundraisers are held to benefit the Newnan-Coweta Boys & Girls Club and Howard Warner Boys & Girls Club. But with the ongoing concerns regarding social distancing, the group opted to host a virtual program this year in lieu of the annual Beer, Bourbon, and Wine event, which is typically held in August and draws over 300 attendees. Ginger Jackson Queener, chairman of the board, said the group was grateful for supportive sponsors who understood the need to
raise funds to support the mission of the club, despite the ongoing issues of large groups and public safety during the current COVID-19 pandemic. “As a nonprofit, we needed to adapt our fundraising and this was a creative way to do it,” said Ginger Jackson Queener. “The event far exceeded our expectations.” The video presentation consisted of testimonies from members and supporters of the organization including Justin Wallace, the 2020 Boys and Girls Club Teen of the Year and recipient of over $10,000 in scholarships from the organization. Joygina Benning, graduating senior and recipient of $3,500 in scholarships from the organization, also spoke during the event, along with testimonies about the impact the club has in the community. Money raised from the event is used to operate both clubs, which currently host 200 members daily. The organization serves youths event goes directly back to the club.
