ndependent MMA and Fitness of Newnan is looking for local businesses to partner with them to sponsor police officers taking jiu jitsu classes. Tim Stout, a local real estate agent who has practiced martial arts all his life, said they’ve always given a 50 percent discount for police officers at Independent MMA. However, Stout said they never had many officers come in, possibly because they’re not comfortable attending a normal class. Stout said they started a free police jiu jitsu class and have had officers from the Georgia State Patrol, Clayton County Police Department, Newnan Police Department and Coweta County Sheriff ’s Office attend.

echnical Sergeant Takecia McDuffie, a local Active Duty Air Force Recruiter, has been showing her support for the community by presenting first responders and organizations with Certificates of Appreciation. McDuffie said when she took over as the Air Force Recruiter for the Coweta area, one thing she wanted to do was say thanks to everyone who is making a difference in the community. “As a recruiter, I am able to show thanks to my community,” McDuffie said. “And that is when I decided to present my community leaders and workers with a token of thank you.” McDuffie has distributed Certificates of Appreciation locally to the Newnan Police Department, Newnan Fire Department, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office and Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “On behalf of Piedmont Newnan Hospital, again, it’s what we do, it’s what our nurses, staff, our EVS, our lab, our respiratory — it’s what they do each and every day,” said Mike Robertson, CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “It’s really them; they are the professionals. They are the ones that strive for excellence and to really take care of our community.” McDuffie said it has been an honor for her to show her appreciation for those in the community who have worked every day during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep the community

going. “Each time I have reached out to ask if I can present the Certificate of Appreciation, I have received such an overwhelming support of gratitude,” McDuffie said. She said as a recruiter she lives by the famous quote by Maya Angelou which says, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Sharpsburg holding book sale Oct. 17 NTH STAFF REPORTS news@newnan.com

he town of Sharpsburg will hold a used book sale on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Staley Park and Pavilion in downtown Sharpsburg. Hardback books will be $1, and paperback books will be two for $1. All proceeds will go to the town library, according to a press release. "We'll use the book sale to help supply the library for 2021," said Brandy Phelps, town librarian. "We need new technology, and the donations help us keep our reading selection fresh."

The town library will resume operations on Oct. 1, after reopening in 2018. The library will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m. COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place for the health and well-being of both the visitors and employees. The town is now accepting donations of used books and no contact donation options are available. Clear out the closet and bedroom, and get ahead of the holiday cleaning! Donations can be dropped off at Town Hall, 105 Main Street, Sharpsburg.

Instead of the traditional in-person meeting, a drive-thru meeting will occur on Saturday, October 10, between 9 a.m. and 11a.m. CFEMC asks members not to arrive before 9 a.m. Business Meeting-attend virtually at utility.org at 10 a.m.

Members can register for the meeting and vote without leaving their vehicle on October 10. Drive-thru lanes will be set up at CFEMC’s headquarters in Palmetto. Members must show their official annual meeting notice, which they will receive by mail, to register.

ewnan resident Virginia Elliott celebrated her 100th birthday Sept. 23 with a socially distant surprise birthday party. Members of First Baptist Church Newnan, where Elliott is one of the oldest members, dropped by to wish her a happy birthday. Elliott worked at the Newnan Hospital for 55 years and retired when she was 93. She was the operating room supervisor for many years, and in her last few years at the hospital, worked in the medical re-

cords department. Jean Thomas helped organize the celebration for Elliott. While Thomas and Elliott are both members at FBC Newnan, Thomas said she first got to know Elliott through working at the hospital together. “She’s just a precious lady,” Thomas said. When asked what the secret to living 100 years is, Elliott said she doesn’t have a secret. “I take each day as it comes,” Elliott said. “The Lord’s been good to me.”
