McConnell awarded Ann McLean Scholarship BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com

n third grade, Katie McConnell decided she wanted to be a teacher. As a student at Newnan High School, she was part of the Teacher Pipeline Program and worked in the Coweta County School System’s After School Program. But after graduation, she had to change plans to attend college, but she said she never gave up on her dream of becoming a teacher. McConnell continued working with children at a recreation department summer day camp and as a nanny. She became a permanent substitute at Brooks Elementary School, then a paraprofessional for pre-K and kindergarten classes. And she went back to school, too, taking core classes at West Georgia Technical College. On Tuesday, McConnell – now a paraprofesSCHOLARSHIP . 4

local car wash was part of a nationwide effort that helped raise over $132,000 for special needs charities as part of its Annual Charity Day. The event, held on Sept. 18, saw Tidal Wave Auto Spa raise approximately $132,632 nationwide for 43 charities, including $1,987.27 for the Rutledge Center in Newnan. The Rutledge Center serves over 60 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Coweta County and is a leading organization in supporting adults with developmental disabilities to have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities. Tidal Wave Auto Spa is headquartered in downtown Thomaston, Georgia, and includes 52 locations across eight states, with 18 more currently under construction. Last year, a total of $500,000 was raised from Charity Day donations from their locations. “At Tidal Wave Auto Spa, giving back is extremely important to us,” according to a company spokesperson. “Because our founders have a son with special
needs, organizations that serve children and adults with developmental disabilities have always been very dear to our hearts.”

sional at Elm Street Elementary School – got a boost toward her future career in the form of the Ann McLean Scholarship from Coweta County Chi Chapter of the International Alpha Delta Kappa teacher sorority. McLean was a 30-year educator and 25-year member of Alpha Delta Kappa who passed away in an accident. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded in McLean’s name annually by Chi Chapter to a nontraditional student. The presentation is in October of each year, which is recognized as ADK Month. McConnell credits Cheryl McChargue, who taught second grade at Brooks and is now the principal of Western Elementary School, with inspiring her to continue working toward her dream. McChargue also pursued an advanced degree while teaching full time, and McConnell said she learned techniques on organization, making learning fun and creating a cozy classroom from McChargue. McConnell is now enrolled at the University of West Georgia Newnan Center, continuing her journey by majoring in elementary education with dual certification in special education-general curriculum. She currently is completing prerequisites for a program – unique to UWG Newnan – that allows paraprofessionals to continue working as they complete their teaching degrees. Since 1975, Chi Chapter has awarded $104,500 in scholarships to 104 recipients, including McConnell.

Pet of the Week My name is:
O
nyx is a momma cat who arrived at the Coweta Animal Shelter with her seven newborn kittens – all of them soaking wet. The coal-black, longhair cat and her days-old kittens were found behind an air conditioning unit on Park Timbers Drive on Aug. 6. She’s estimated to be between 18 months a nd 2 years old. She nursed her kittens at the shelter, and now four of them have been adopted, and it’s time for momma to find a new home. When Onyx first came into the shelter, she was sassy and didn’t like to be touched, but she’s really come around, say shelter workers. She’s a mellow cat who is friendly, but not too friendly.

Georgia students surpass national average on ACT NTH STAFF REPORTS
education@newnan.com
G
eorgia’s class of 2020 continued a now half-decade trend of outpacing the nation on the ACT, with the state’s average score increasing as the national average dropped. Georgia’s average composite score for the class of 2020 was 21.7, up from the 2019 score of 21.4 in 2019 and higher, for the fifth year in a row, than the national average of 20.6. The national average dropped from 20.7 in 2019 to
20.6 in 2020. Scores in each individual subject area increased and were higher than the national average. “I am always glad to see Georgia students succeeding, but there’s something special about the class of 2020’s accomplishments,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “These students, who saw their senior year come to an abrupt halt due to a global pandemic, have now outscored their peers across the nation on both the SAT and ACT. To say I’m proud of them would be an understatement. Georgia continues to exceed expectations on state and national metrics and show that you don’t have to be all about the test to provide a

That’s thanks to the teachers and students doing the work each day on the classroom level.” The percentage of Georgia students in the class of 2020 meeting all four of ACT’s College Readiness benchmarks – 30 percent – was also higher than the national average of 26 percent, and increased in all subject areas. College Readiness benchmarks are scores on the ACT subject-area tests that represent the level of achievement required for students to have a 50-percent chance of obtaining a B or higher, or about a 75 percent chance of obtaining a C or higher, in corresponding credit-bear-

Black/African American students had an average composite score of 18.2, compared to the national average of 16.7. Hispanic/Latino students had an average composite score of 20.9, compared to the national average of 18.5. All scores are based on 2020 high school graduates who took the ACT at some point during grades 10 to 12. For more information, visit www.gadoe.org .

Local singer advances to Pigeon Forge Path To Fame finals NTH STAFF REPORTS
education@newnan.com
P
almetto resident Thomas Gay was recently named a finalist in the Pigeon Forge Path To Fame Virtual Talent Competition. Gay, 19, a singer/songwriter, performed “Take the Ribbon from Your Hair” to secure his place in the finals. Raised in Newnan, Gay has played instruments his entire life but only began writing songs this year. His musical influences include the Zac Brown Band, George Strait and Travis Tritt. The Pigeon Forge Path To Fame Virtual Talent Competition grand champion will win a year of monthly consultations with the Nashville-based talent executive who discovered Grammy nominated artist Kelsea Ballerini, according to a press release from the competition. Also, the winner will receive a virtual consultation with country artist and Grand Ole Opry member Craig Morgan. Professional photography and videography sessions, media training and introductions to other entertainment industry executives complete the grand prize package, which includes tools to help the winner advance his/her career. Home to a variety of musical productions and dinner shows, Pigeon Forge’s theatre community has helped launch the careers of Carly Pearce, who performed at Dollywood theme park and Country Tonite theater, American Idol alum Janelle Arthur, soap star Eric Martsolf, and Morgan, who also performed at Country Tonite. In previous years, Path To Fame traveled with a team of talent scouts to various markets in the Southeast. To accommodate restrictions and venue closings due to COVID-19, the talent competition has been reengineered to accommodate video auditions. “We know that performers were affected by the economic shutdown and operating restrictions necessary to combat the spread of COVID-19,” said Pigeon Forge Exec-
We Cancel Timeshares for You Many people believe their timeshares cannot be canceled, but they often can be. Our founder and CEO, Chuck McDowell, has successfully fought in federal court for the right to help timeshare owners — like you — out of their “binding” agreements. Whether you were misled or pressured, you may have an easy exit.
How Does the Cancellation Process Work? • Start with a FREE consultation to discuss your needs. • If we see that the circumstances of your agreement qualify you to exit the timeshare, you’ll be assigned a specialist to walk you through gathering documentation. • Our Resolution Department then works quickly to have your timeshare and related fees permanently terminated. We are able to help most timeshare owners that contact us. You could be one phone call away from complete peace of mind.

Don’t think for another minute that you are stuck with this. What we do is help you cancel your timeshare along with all of the debt and fees associated with it. I guarantee that if we take you on as a client and we don’t cancel your timeshare, you’ll pay nothing! Chuck McDowell, Founder & CEO
