irst Baptist Church of Moreland hosted a lunch for local first responders in recognition of National First Responders Day, which is celebrated annually on Oct. 28. Congress designated Oct. 28 as National First Responders Day in 2017 to honor firefighters, police officers, EMTs and all those who are first on the scene in stressful situations, according to nationaltoday.com . FBC Moreland Pastor Todd Slade said several members of the church are first responders. “We have a deep appreciation for what they do, the service they provide and how they take care of the community,” Slade said. “We wanted to show them love because they serve us faithfully, especially in light of all that’s going on in our country.” BackRoads BBQ in MoFIRST RESPONDERS . 5

CPR ‘Unity Walk’ brings message to Newnan neighborhoods

D

ozens of Cowetans braved a downpour to march for unity Saturday, as a Unity Walk wound through Newnan, trekking through neighborhoods from the Central Educational Center to Lynch Park. The event was put on by Citizens for Positive Reform, which was formed early this summer following protests in downtown Newnan sparked by the death of George Floyd at police hands in Minneapolis and police shootings around the country. In addition to the protests, the group has spearheaded voter registration drives, held a children’s book event and partnered with other entities, said Stacie Bristow of CPR. The city of Newnan, Coweta County and other organizations have recently approved moving forward with a series

of community forums on race, equity, inclusion and justice – an idea sparked by CPR. The idea for the event was to gather as a community to protest iniquities and be united, said Monique Sharpe, public relations liaison for CPR. “We’re doing it for all the Breonnas, all the George Floyds. All the Martin Luther Kings and the Malcolm Xes,” Bristow said as the group readied to leave the CEC to begin the walk. “I’m hoping that we wouldn’t have to do it much longer, for future generations.” There was a good turnout – about 75 people including several in trucks with signs, who were on hand to transport anyone who might have trouble finishing the walk. The walk went through many neighborhoods because some people weren’t able to come to protests on the square,

Burn Boot Camp raises $1,100 for cancer patients at Trunk or Treat BY LAUREL HUSTER laurel@newnan.com

B

urn Boot Camp in Newnan held a Trunk or Treat Sunday and raised $1,100 for 180 Degree Farm to provide food for local breast cancer patients. 180 Degree Farm is a local nonprofit that provides cancer patients with organically grown food. Jess Charman, operations man-

ager for Burn Boot Camp, said members of the gym were able to select a cause that was important to them. She said Burn Boot Camp has predominantly female members, and with October recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they wanted to specifically raise money for breast cancer patients. “We want the community to know that we’re more than just a gym,” Charman said. Charman said members of the gym decorated the trunks of their cars for trick or treating,

and there was a costume contest for kids. The event was planned for Saturday, but because of the weather, it was moved to Sunday. “So many people have been disappointed by missing out on events, so it was nice that the community could come together,” Charman said. Charman said Partners II Pizza at SummerGrove donated pizza that they were able to sell at the event to raise money for 180 Degree Farm. They also collected additional donations. She said her favorite part of the event was

seeing how Burn Boot Camp members interacted with the community. “They went all out,” Charman said. “The trunks were incredible. There was a true variety of the trunks, and it brought so much joy to members’ children and the community members.” Charman said Burn Boot Camp currently has a seven-day free trial you can sign up for on their website, burnbootcamp.com .

embers from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Drug Enforcement Unit gave an update on their program during Friday’s meeting of the Newnan Rotary Club. Cpl. Mark Storey talked about the dayto-day activities of the K-9 unit and the work done by the dogs. While many are commonly utilized for drug detection, Storey said some of the most rewarding work is in the search and rescue of missing people, including Alzheimer’s patients and children. In 2018, members from the sheriff’s office were able to locate a missing South

Carolina man lying on his back in the woods over 500 yards from the interstate where his car was found. The prior year, deputies successfully located and rescued an 80-year-old Alzheimer’s patient who went missing from his home. Storey said the dogs also help provide a bridge between the community and the sheriff’s office. During an outdoor demonstration, Deputy Ryan Anderson gave a presentation on how his K-9, Rocky, is able to detect illegal drugs. The Newnan Rotary Club meets every Friday at noon at The Newnan Country Club.
